THE COLUMBINE BOOK
This page previews my upcoming Columbine book, with the working title A Lasting Impression: The Definitive Account of Columbine and Its Aftermath.
The Columbine Guide offers a wealth of material and resources about Columbine, and guidance on which sites to trust and which information turned out to be wrong.
A LASTING IMPRESSION
The Definitive Account of Columbine and Its Aftermath
ANATOMY OF A TRAGEDY: This will be the first comprehensive book on the Columbine massacre by a prominent journalist: A profile of the killers and an account of their aftermath.
ORIGIN: The book developed from seven years covering the story for Salon, Slate, The New York Times and other media.
WHY THEY DID IT: The FBI employed a team of world-renowned psychologists to probe the killers' motives. Their conclusions, along with the first analysis by the FBI's lead investigator, are summarized in my Slate piece The Depressive and the Psychopath.
COMING IN 2008: A Lasting Impression will be published in hardcover by Dutton
(Penguin).

In a superb piece in Slate magazine, Dave Cullen reveals the conclusions of the lead F.B.I. investigator, Dwayne Fuselier, as well as of the Michigan State psychiatrist Frank Ochberg
and others who studied the Columbine shootings.

Salon magazine's Dave Cullen, who has been on top of the Columbine story from the start, reported on Thursday that investigators finalizing
the official report on Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold now say they ''were never part of the Trench Coat Mafia'' and ''didn't target jocks,
minorities or Christians.''

THE COLUMBINE GUIDE
An insider's guide through the web of myths, legitimate evidence, and contradictory media coverage surrounding Columbine.
- Most of the early Columbine coverage got it mostly wrong: particularly who Eric and Dylan were and what they were trying to do. With the luxury of hindsight, we now have a good idea of the truth about killers--but all the misconceptions remain in print, and everyone researching Columbine learns the same myths over and over.
This guide is designed to help you sort through it all effectively.
- I compiled and analyzed a wealth of Columbine information researching my book. So I created this Columbine guide to share all that information, with extensive links and commentary to steer you toward the accurate information, and away from the pervasive myths.
- It features links to the following, with analysis of which sites to trust, and which to be leery of: news stories, 911 tapes, 25,000 pages of evidence, leaks from Eric Harris's journal, Dylan Klebold's prescient story, Eric's website, the Sheriff's rpt, Gov's rpt, excellent FBI report on school shooters, how to obtain every document/tape/video released by court order, etc.
- UPDATE, JULY 2006: The Guide now includes a link to 1,000 newly-released pages of evidence, including Eric Harris's notorious journal, which he called "The Book of God." This is the most important evidence in the case.

As Dave Cullen's excellent Slate article published last year showed, Harris was a flat-out psychopath, in the psychiatric sense,
and Klebold a hotheaded and depressive sidekick; their intention was to wipe out hundreds, if not thousands, of people in a display
of contempt for American values, not to get back at a few jocks. Cullen dispelled the myths, pointing out that contrary to popular belief,
neither jocks, nor blacks, nor Christians were targeted.

As Dave Cullen wrote in his authoritative article about the Columbine anniversary in Slate, Eric Harris wanted to bomb his high school out of a desire ''to terrorize the entire nation
by attacking a symbol of American life.''

Then, in September 1999, Dave Cullen published a piece on the Web site Salon.com that claimed to dispel several "myths" associated with Columbine, most notably Cassie’s confession of faith.

Ever since the online site Salon.com ran an article subtitled "Everything You Know About the Littleton Killings Is Wrong" (Sept. 23) in which
Dave Cullen attempted to debunk popular perceptions of the Columbine massacre, skepticism has mounted about the veracity of the alleged exchange
between Cassie and her killer.
