Good for her! I admire people with the courage of their convictions.

Yes, good for her Smiley.   I'm a bit confused though about why she's gone as far as converting if she thinks of herself as having "no denomination".   I'm guessing that she isn't including herself in "the whole family"?  Anyway, good for her and the whole family.   It's a nice public gesture of support.

 Dear fellow Brokies,

It's been quite a long time since I've dropped by here to check out the dialogue.
I've searched for posts by "Doug2017", the founder of this thread and did not come across anything recent.
I went to his profile and checked the last time he posted, and found that occurred on March 3, 2009, i.e., nearly a year ago...!
Although Doug and I held diametrically opposed views (Doug, a 'non-believer, I, a Christian) there was nonetheless, respect for for each others positions.
I found him exceptionally intelligent, and markedly kind and considerate.
When I checked those last posts of his, nothing in them indicated he was having any problem that would precipitate an abrupt departure.
It appears to me that his participation just suddenly ceased...!

Do any of you who frequent here, know what happened to cause that cessation...??

  Thanks,

Zad, I know of nothing, either. I wondered what had happened, too.( Other posters who have not regularly posted here include JohnnyX and Vic, although I know Vic's  sex site was still up recently.)  I figured Doug would begin posting again eventually.

  Thanks Martina and Jer,

The thing that got my 'concern meter' to register up in the higher numbers was that Doug had informed visitors that not only did he live alone and in an isolated place, but that he had no outside social contacts, and also that it's been nearly 1 year since he posted anything!
Unfortunately, there aren't any options available to those of us who are concerned, and that bothers the hell outta me!

I live way out in the boonies, so I had to wait for BBM to be on satellite before I could see it.  Here, none of the movies that would be interesting to see are ever allowed to be displayed.  I am still waiting to see Fahrenheit 911, someday.

I talk to no one, socialize with no one.  I did meet with one other gay guy here a few years ago, but he was so messed up by religion that I could not really deal with him.  He soon moved to Seattle.  I do not know of any others, but I have no doubt that many exist like Ennis, like me, who go on day by day, looking and acting like we fit in.  Because we are hidden in plain sight, we can not even pick out our own like minded people, it would not surprise me if there an maybe a few dozen like me in this vast area, if only we could find a way to reach each other. I know the folks told me many years ago that if the neighbors ever find out that I am gay, they would kill me.  I have little doubt they would do major damage to me, but I can not risk the damage they would do to the rest of the family.  Yeah, I could move away again, but to what advantage?

  Martina, Jer,

Here are 3 quotes that got me concerned after realizing Doug had been gone so long.
The most chilling one is the last one boldened.  When he mentions "the folks", I'm wondering who he's referring to....(?)
I'm beginning to think somehow we've got to look deeper into this.

  Friends,

On a hunch I thought I'd check to see if Doug had written anything that had been selected to be included in "Beyond Brokeback" - our book.
  Yes! He did....!
His full name is Doug Carr, and according to the footnote under his piece "he lives on a ranch in Nebraska where he milks 100 cows daily and runs and internet based business."
I will try to find out more about Doug Carr, and will post any info I come up with.

Hey Guys, I am here!  Just being quite...  I read every post at some point, sometimes it takes a day or so.  If you ever want to me to say something just say my name.

It seems you guys have everything so under control, that I did not see a reason to break in.  When I get all hot and bothered, I just make a fool of myself anyhow... LOL!

Zad, I should say that the statement about coming out with my folks happened many, many years ago now.   The neighbors are still religious nutters and I would not put anything past them, but that statement happened a long time ago in my college days.

Nothing much going on here, just cold and snowy. Can not wait for spring... I have retired from milking.  Closed my ebay store for the time being, waiting to see what ebay is finally going to settle down to. Working on another project now.

I watch the "debates" on the tv, cuss a little and then do something else.  I have strong opinions, but I highly doubt they are much different than the majority here.

Well do not know much... until later.

on the others missing in action: i was in contact quite a while with vic, even when he kind of "retired" from dcforum. met him in athens 3 years ago, and he planned on coming to vienna. somehow the contact fell asleep lately...but i still see him online on skype frequently so i guess he's alive and kicking  Grin
he was dedicating more and more time to his own forum and sex site, and his work. he felt dc didn't bring up much more new things, so he kind of "retired" from it, leaving the option open to come back whenever he felt like it.

Johnny X has, if I'm not mistaken, posted on the forum anniversary threads?

JohnnyX PM'd me last in December of '09. Nothing since then, though he might have posted on other threads that I don't follow.

It's good to hear that you're still alive and kicking, Doug. And Zad? Thanks for being so concerned.

(snip)
A fascinating study of brain cancer patients concludes that damage to a specific portion of the brain leads to an increased desire for "self-transcendence" or spirituality. Researchers think they may have pinpointed the specific location in the brain that controls attitudes about religion.

The researchers make no claim that religious fervor is indicative of brain damage, only that a specific part of the brain seems to control one's attitudes about spirituality in general. The finding may help develop new strategies for the treatment of personality disorders.
