I think the book project is a great idea. All those wonderful insights and posts deserve to be preserved for future generations.  Smiley

I was wondering though, and sorry if this has been discussed before, is a copy of the book going to be offered to Annie Proulx/Ang Lee/McMurtry-Ossana etc.? Like a gift of the fans to the people who made this film happen?

I just learned of the book project from today's Daily Sheet.  What a magnificent idea and I would love to help in some way.  I'm just wondering, would it be possible for Annie, Ang, McMurtry-Ossana, Heath, Jake, or anyone else associated with the film to contribute a forward for the book?  That would be fantastic!   Smiley

Lintelomiel and Trubrokeback, thanks for your good ideas. Someone earlier suggested that we give a copy of the book to those who created the story and film and it seems to me that would be an appropriate thing for us to do.

As for getting a forward or introduction from one of the film's creators, I would say that would be a very, very long shot.  I'm sure they've all moved on from BBM to other projects. Plus I don't know how eager they would be to have their name in a book created totally by volunteers. That's not to say we shouldn't try, though.

Trubrokeback, right now we've got enough volunteers to staff the project well. But watch the Forum and if later you see us calling desperately for help so we can meet our timeline, I hope you'll come running! I really appreciate your offer to help.

Kitty,
Yeah, I figured it would be a real long shot, but who knows, might be worth a try; it would just add so much to the book.  On the other hand, the reality is that their lawyers, agents, etc. would also probably get involved and insist that they receive a "cut," and that would probably really complicate things.  Still, it's a nice dream.

I'll keep an open ear if you holler for help.  By the way, love the quote from "October Sky" in your caption.  That was the film where I first discovered JG; love that movie.   Smiley

Hey, I'm glad you recognized that line, Trubrokeback! That's one of my favorite Jake movies. Can't believe that when I first saw the movie I didn't recognize what a star he would become!!!  Cheesy

Thanks to a number of donors, we were able to quickly raise the $2,000 needed to pay for the publication our book. Now, in the next few weeks, we hope to raise $4,000 to help with the marketing and publicity for the book, so we can have the resources to spread the word about this book as widely as possible. Wouldn't it be great if our our little book got the same amount of great publicity as the Variety ad? You can help us make it happen! Just click on the link below to make a donation to the book project.
Thanks!

I swear..... the book cover looks just as if the instructions came from Annie Proulx and Ang Lee brought it to print.  It is a true reflection of Brokeback Mountain, both the movie and the story.  I cannot wait to get my copies of this book, so that I may soak up every single word like a parched sponge.  I hope this book will be presented to both Annie and Ang as another token of gratitude for their works.  Well Done Guys!  Well Done!

Cam:

I read all of your (well almost all) posts to get to know you better.  This quote above has a picture of the highest mountain in Arizona, 12,000 ft San Francisco Peaks.  The picture looks west toward what is called the Inner Basin, it's the caldera of the extinct volcano.  It's where I went to college and I'm so glad they picked this picture for the book.

Is there any idea yet about how much a copy of the book will sell for?

$16 soft cover and $31 hard cover. A bit on the high end, but we are charging what our publisher sets as list price.

Posted in today's Daily Sheet:

Our volunteers are working very hard to produce our forum's very own book entitled Beyond Brokeback: The Impact of a Film. The book should be available for preorder in mid-to-late August and in print by mid-September. We are now putting together a very aggressive marketing plan, so we can introduce to the world-at-large the great impact the book and film had on readers and viewers around the world. We know this book will be treasured by many of our members; however, we hope it can have an impact far beyond the world of Brokeaholics.

University academicians and social researchers are already telling us this book will be very significant to the field of pop culture and film because no other film has ever had such an impact on viewers that fans chronicled the impact in a book of their own making. As with our ad campaign, we are literally making history and helping to cement BBM as one of the greatest films in the history of cinema in terms of impact and audience reaction. It is very exciting.

You can help us as we put together the best marketing plan possible. To give us your great ideas, to share information on contacts, or to discuss marketing strategies, please visit us in the book thread over the next weeks. We hope our marketing can include a wide range of options including media coverage, author signings, coverage in the gay press, radio and TV talk shows (who knows--this sounds like the type of grass roots activism Oprah loves to cover), and more. We are waiting to hear your great ideas. The book thread can be found here:

http://davecullen.com/forum/index.php?topic=8935.1065

Also, we have raised money from our generous members to publish our book. We are now trying to raise seed money for marketing the book. Over the next few weeks, we hope to raise a minimum of $4,000 to help us pay for marketing costs and fees. If you can donate to help us in a bid to make film history, then go here:

I just found this thread from the Daily Sheet and I agree that getting an introduction or forward by Annie Proulx or Larry McMurtry/Diana Ossana would be great, but impossible. Since Annie Proulx was kind enough to reply to the forums 'Meet the Creators' questionaire, perhaps she could sign a copy and maybe write a brief note inside it. It could be auctioned for charity generating some publicity for the book and benefiting  a deserving charity.

Regarding your request for marketing ideas, I don't really have any great ones, other than to say that, if at all possible, the marketing needs to go as mainstream as possible and not be limited to the gay media.  If it's limited to the gay media, it will most likely get limited traction.  The film, after all, is very mainsteam now and has had a great amount of impact across many demographics.  Probably the best thing is to just follow the same marketing plan that the film itself followed.

As you said this is the 1st time a movie has spurred its fans into creating and privately publishing a book expressing their love of the movie.

I would hope the mainstream media would notice this.  If not then we need to bombard them with all the details until they make it news.
