Hello,
I attended the Autry's "Out West" series viewing of "Brokeback Mountain" over the weekend, and then had the pleasure of meeting many of you during dinner at "Hugo's".

Hiya buddy!  It was great meeting you at the Autry, and like I said in LA, we love having new members!

jake, find a thread or two that are interesting to you and post 5 times then you will be able to send and receive private messages.  you could start here by explaining a bit about how you found this group and why it is significant to you.  i am sure you will soon receive thread suggestions from old timers and moderators for new threads to try, and we will all surely recommend reading some threads about our personal experiences with the short story and the movie.

you are welcome here.

Okay, here goes...

I had arranged to take several days off from my job at the hospital over the holidays.  The vacation would go from Dec. 24 to 29, then two nights back at work followed by four more off.  I looked forward to the chance to relax and get a few things done.

Christmas was, as always, thoroughly enjoyable with my extended family.  On Christmas Day, my sis presented me with a year-long subscription to Netflix as one of my gifts.  I was thrilled, because I had planned to subscribe just as soon as I purchased that hot new LED TV for the bedroom (redone recently, and you can't put an old fat-butt box in a room like that!).

On Dec. 26 I activated my account, filled out their questionnaire, and watched Joan Rivers' "A Piece of Work."  Later that night, I streamed a documentary about the Middle Ages.  Everything looked so great on my large, widescreen PC monitor, and I started to make a mental list of all the movies I had intended to see but missed.  What a great way to R-E-L-A-X during a short vacation!

On Dec. 27 I logged onto Netflix and up came several recommendations based on my answers to their questionnaire.  Among the films listed was BBM.  "Gee, I never got to see that one...heard it was pretty good...is it already five years?...I remember hearing about Heath's death...."  I got into my loungewear in the early evening, poured a drink, and clicked PLAY to watch BBM.

I don't think I'll ever be the same again.  That film broke me wide open.  I have watched it six times already, watched videos of interviews with Annie Proulx, Jake, Heath, Ang and others.  Read articles, found this site on Dec. 29 and finally registered today, read the short story, etc.  Still processing what happened.  I've gotten almost nothing done that I planned to do on this vacation.  Don't care.  Back to work tonight.

This site is a treasure, a gift.

Enough said for now.  I'm so grateful to be here.

Finding Brokeback

In early 2006, as the Brokeback Mountain phenomenon swept the world, some remarkable things happened. One of these was the emergence of Dave Cullen’s Ultimate Brokeback Forum, an online resource for Brokeback aficionados to exchange experiences, ideas, and perspectives. The Brokeback Forum grew to more than 6,000 individuals who busily discussed topics ranging from Buddhist symbolism to exposed microphone cords, although most discussions dealt with the deep human side of the film and the remarkable feelings of pain, passion, fear, love, sadness, and hope it has engendered in us all.

One of these online conversations concerned travel to the film’s shooting locations in Alberta, Canada. Though a few news and Internet accounts provided some tantalizing clues to where some of the film’s scenes were shot (many of these reports later proved to be incorrect), there existed no reliable resource to guide Brokeback pilgrims to the Laundry Apartment, the Twist Ranch, the Childress Dance Hall, or even the Dozy Embrace site. This was plainly, as Jack would say, “a goddamn bitch of an unsatisfactory situation.”

Enter die hard Brokeback fans Jim Bond (born traveler), Rob Freeman (owner of Jack’s truck), Barry Gilligan (web guru), Steve Gin (Brokeback actor), Lauren Gurney (intrepid explorer), and Bob Sohomuch (map buff). Over the course of many emails, the notion emerged of a non-commercial website dedicated to helping Brokeback fans find these special places.
