Same scene, a more serious take on it. Until the end, that is.

6th Anniversary thread would be great.

As for deleting the posts here, that's not necessary.

Actually Sara, I do.

I wasn't going to post this, as it doesn't seem to get a lot of replies, but why not put it here?  It may get some responses.

Until that moment when - I find the one that I'll spend forever with

2011 Retrospective Survey

1. What did you do in 2011 that you’d never done before?

Climbed a lighthouse.  It was part of a Michigan Lighthouse Tour that I took in July, and I climbed all the way to the top of Tawas Point Lighthouse (and got a button to prove it!).

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I don't recall specifically making this a New Year's resolution, but I wanted to get into all the 48 lower states before turning 60, and Michigan in July was the last one I'd never been in at all, so I achieved that goal.  I still have to go back to a few states that I've been in, but didn't get out of the car, train or air terminal (i.e., feet weren't on the ground).
Yes, I did make a resolution for next year, and it has to do with getting more in touch with my spiritual side.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

No.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

He wasn't "close" because I hadn't seen him since 1996, but my cousin in Texas killed himself.  We never found out for sure how but we think it was with a gun.  He was my elderly widowed aunt's (my father's brother's wife) last remaining child, so we worry about her.

5. What countries did you visit?

No new countries this year.

6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?

more time at home to take care of my house (inside and out) - I was in Colorado for a long time this year

7. What date from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

Probably July 24-28, the dates of the Michigan Lighthouse Tour (by tour bus).  I love traveling to see my Brokie friends, but this was a new experience, with new people, and everything went well.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Being able to handle all of the travel I did this year without having a total breakdown!  Sometimes I didn't know whether I was coming or going.  I went to lots of new southern states by taking an AMTRAK train to/from New Orleans, and saw that city.  I spent a night near the Minneapolis airport (in Bloomington) on the way to Denver, and saw the Mall of America.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Not getting along better with my brother.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

yes, a serious cough/cold in February that went on for weeks (came on right after coming home from Colorado then)

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Expenses for trips to San Francisco, Boston, Chicago.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

My mother.  She had cataract surgery on one eye and had been very scared, but handled it fine and managed putting in the drops afterwards by herself.  She also needed some unpleasant treatment on her other eye, but was brave about it.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

Rick Santorum, Republican presidential candidate from Pennsylvania.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Travels.

15.What made you really really really excited?

Seeing my Brokie friends, because it doesn't happen that often.  And having Ryan Harrison and Shawn Kirchner come to dinner with us in Chicago.

16.What song will forever remind you of 2011?

“Meet Me On the Mountain" by Shawn Krichner  (I'll steal this answer, too.)

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder?  much happier
b) thinner or fatter?   a little fatter
c) richer or poorer?  same

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Going through things that I want to donate to charity; finishing books

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Meaningless time wasting

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

at home (thankfully)

21. How will you be spending New Year's?

at home, talking to Brokies in the Diner

22. Did you fall in love in 2011?

no

23. How many one-night stands?

None.

24. What were your favorite TV programs?

Glee (when I was able to watch); World Series baseball and college basketball

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?

No

26. What was the best book you read?

I'm reading "11/22/1963" right now and it's great.  Before that, I enjoyed "The Good Husband."

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Maybe some of the Youtube links that were put up in the Diner.  I enjoyed "Kenny Ball and His Jazzmen" playing "Midnight in Moscow" which was posted on New Year's Eve.

28. What did you want and get?

to go back to Boston for one day to see the Chihuly glass exhibit at the Museum of Art; also, addresses of and replies from several people on the Michigan Lighthouse Tour

29. What did you want and not get?

a new outfit when shopping at the mall after Christmas -- hate clothes shopping, couldn't find anything, hoping to order something online

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

J.Edgar

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

Went to dinner with my family in Colorado (mother, aunt, uncle, sister, brother-in-law; and received a jigsaw puzzle of a lighthouse from my aunt, which I put together in my mom's basement over the next month or so).  I was 60.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

More time for serious reading.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?

Casual.  But would like something dressier for 2012.

34. What kept you sane?

My family and friends.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

No one anyone would know.  I met an author of local history books who is a minor public figure in his own town, and found him very interesting.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

The Republican debates.  I wanted to know who the Republican candidates were and decide who would be the "lesser of the evils" to have running against Obama, just in case his popularity was so low that he couldn't win re-election.  I'm afraid I decided that Jon Huntsman would be the "lesser of the evils," and I don't think he has a chance.

37. Who did you miss?

friends who are no longer here.

38. Who was the best new person(s) you met?

People from the Michigan Lighthouse Trip.  They all live near Pittsburgh, though.  One, the writer, I have read his history books (he sent me a copy of his latest book and I bought the older ones).  One of the women and I are planning to go on another bus tour together in April, to Georgia and South Carolina.

38. Side question...who would I like to get to know better?

Several of the people from that Michigan Lighthouse Trip

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011:

It's something we thought we learned from BBM, but it bears repeating:  Don't be afraid to reach out to someone you'd like to talk to; the worst thing that can happen is that they won't answer, but if you don't say anything, it's for sure that nothing will happen.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year (any song from any year):

can't think of anything right now

I'm glad you put the Retrospective Survey up again this year, Chuck.

I find it a really helpful tool in looking back on what happened last year and what I hope will happen this year, and I suspect that even people who don't actually post their answers to the survey find it useful, too, just to contemplate the questions to themselves.
