Barcelona is the main city of Catalonia, which occupies the northeastern part of the Iberian Peninsula.

Spanish is frequently regarded as a foreign language there.

A far cry from when I was last there, when Franco was still in power.

Franco banned the teaching of Catalan, something that is still greatly resented.  Catalan and Spanish are fairly close but I have to tell you that my attempts to read Catalan have not been very successful; i sort of get the gist of it though.
