Race week here. It starts the Friday the week BEFORE race week and by the following Friday (coming up) they are expecting at least 650,000 additional vehicles in the area. For me, the most amazing thing is... they're all out of here by the Monday afternoon after the last race.

^^^ what's that?

They're building a Formula 1 track in South Austin and are saying that on opening day this November they're expecting over 100,000 people to descend on the city...oy vey.  Good for business, though.

That's not NASCAR.

Not sure, but I think Austin is way bigger than Bristol.
Your expected 100,000 people are nothing compared to our 650,000 VEHICLES! People come here from all over the world. Many, as I indicated above, come the weekend before Race Weekend and vacation in the area. Great time of the year for that... and we have the fair going on as well, so there's lots to do. Until 2 years ago, there were never any  tickets available for either the early spring or late summer races... they were passed down from year to year within families (just like Masters tickets.) Motel rooms are booked at least a year in advance. A guy on tv last night was saying how happy he was that they'd been able to book a room no  ore than 30 miles away! Most of us who aren't into NASCAR or other types of auto racing just stay home or away from close vicinity to the track for ALL race weekends.

 Cheesy  Cheesy  Cheesy
Just looked up the populations...
Austin: 750,000+
Bristol:   25,000+

 Whut?
Just heard a retraction on tonight's local news...
we are NOT expecting 650,000 vehicles for the weekend.
We are expecting 65,000 vehicles.
BMS holds fewer than 200,000 people and there would not be enough tailgate parties in the whole state to accommodate the overflow if the original estimate was correct!

I once got caught in a traffic jam on I-81 near Bristol, in connection with a race. So many cars!

Yeah, I was headed up that way this afternoon and remembered they're racing (trucks) tonight, so I changed my mind. I'll go next week when things are back to normal.

Did anybody see the Travers Stakes yesterday (on regular tv, for a change) A dead heat. So rare in graded stakes races.
And the first in the Travers since 1874.

(And my thanks to Nancy for her "right click" comment which means I can copy address out of my address bar. Duh!)

Mine That Bird won the KY Derby in 2009, a HUGE upset. After that he finished second in the Preakness and third in the Belmont*... and then nothing for his next 9 races until he was retired in November 2010.
And he's getting a Hollywood picture made about him.

http://www.paulickreport.com/news/bloodstock/mine-that-bird-s-story-to-the-silver-screen/

* His brother, Summer Bird, WON the Belmont that day.
Perhaps the film should be about their daddy, Dirty Bird.

Just kidding, his name is not Dirty Bird. It's Birdstone.

9ers fumbled and Denver scored.  Then they pulled Manning and the replacement qb threw a pick...

Denver 17     SF 7
