^Gaah, I just began reading "To Kill A Mockingbird" the other day so I'm not there yet with that quote you refer to. (I'm sure somebody else could find it, though.)
About Jake and this book, I've read here and there that it is said to be one of his favourite books (and that his dogs are named after the characters Atticus and Boo Radley...?).

About today's Daily Sheet, really great news about new films for Heath and Jake!

I also loved the Post of The Day. Really great expression that we're like one person in here.

I a pretty sure the quote is: "Remember , it is a sin to kill a mockingbird", and it comes somewhere around chapter 10 or 11.  Scout remembers Atticus telling her that but she is not sure what it means.  She asks the lady next or door, or across the street.  It ends up being one of the major themes of the book about how it is the responsibility of society to protect the innocent and vulnerable as symbolised by Tom and Boo and, of course, in several other ways (saving the roly poly bug).

Today's daily sheet lists September 22, 2006, as the release date for Jake's "Zodiac."  I'm hoping this is correct---can't get here too soon for me. However, on www.comingsoon.net the release date is now posted as November 22, the day before Thanksgiving (they earlier had the September date).  There was some talk about the release date being pushed back to November in order to be nearer the awards season, since November and December are traditionally the release months for "serious" films that harbor Oscar ambitions.

Just wanted to say I love the daily sheet. I try to read it everyday. It's got great stuff in it and I like the member profiles.
And seeing that I am a huge fan of fanfic, I like that the authors are featured. It's their stories that helped me get over the
intense pain of BBM and find a way to cope.

Thanks bcatjr and everyone who has been so supportive of TDS.

After we went to "press" today, I found out just a little more about the Zagat survey.  After you have completed your survey, you will be given one chance to vote for your all-time favorite movie and, of course, we hope you won't miss that opportunity to vote for the one and only BBM!   Jan

I did the Zagat Survey just now because the Daily Sheet entry said it was EASY.

And it was!   Always like to place a check next to Brokeback Mountain!

P.S.:  I also noticed that Crash is listed as a "fantasy!"
          That made me laugh!

Hi all -- the link to the Christion Science Monitor's review of Larry McMurtry's new novel has expired, sorry about that!  Yesterday it worked but I didn't know they expire their links after four days.  At least we know the review was very favorable.

Meanwhile, there are two reviews posted on Amazon.  Of course I would be remiss if I didn't remind you to enter Amazon through our booksotre link just in case you end up buying something while you're there.  Thanks for reading TDS!  - Ellen

here's something I'd like to see added to TDS, under upcoming events  (forgive me if this has been posted... I really can't keep up):   Teddy Thompson is on the programme at the Edmonton, Alberta Folklife Festival August 11-13. There are a lot of other wonderful acts on the bill, too, including another act from the BBM soundtrack, Linda Ronstadt.

Imagine Teddy singing "I Don't Want To Say Goodbye" right there in Alberta", where it all happened... it sets my heart aflutter. :-)

Here's the programme:  http://www.edmontonfolkfest.org/004.performers/004-02.programme.htm?ffref=folkflash

This is a bit picky, but since our medium is, in fact, the written word you can't be too picky, IMO.  The Daily Sheet refers to the Marquis of Queensbury rules.  It is in fact the Marquess of Queensbury.  Marquis is the French spelling of a similar title held by the Englishman, the Marquess of Queensbury.  Just an FYI.
I'm not certain that's correct, TB.

From Saturday's Daily Sheet

Quote
We were surprised to learn that the owner still hasn't seen BBM (One of our members has just sent him the DVD).  Consequently, he can't yet realize the importance of this house in film history. One of our Canadian members has pledged to help him with the costs of fencing and protection; another is willing to donate time to help repair the house, and we suspect many others would gladly pay a fee to view the house if it were preserved.  As of yet though, the owner remains unconvinced there is sufficient interest to merit this effort.

So, where do we start?

Do we want to see the house preserved in some way?  Do you see yourself making the trip to Alberta to see the BBM shooting locations?  Would you be willing to write a testimonial about the power of the scenes filmed in the Twist home?  Can we encourage him to at least protect it a little more effectively – perhaps a fence?

The immediate problem is to get Mr. Hixt to accept/provide better protection for the house.  If this isn't addressed very soon, we won't have to worry about preserving the house, it will be gone.

Why don't we show him the "love" that he didn't get from the movie folks? A postcard campaign to him may be just the thing to let him know that there are many of us out there that care about the preservation of his house.  We can do this; we've done it before when we wanted to thank the movie's stars.

Here is the address:      Mr. Larry Hixt,
                                  Box 64
                                  Beiseker, AB
                                  Canada,  TOM OGO

US Post Office says it takes fifty-five cents to send a regular size post card from anywhere in the USA to Canada.  (Sixty-three cents for a regular letter).  Be sure to keep you comments positive and encouraging and most importantly let him know the importance of his house.

Can't you envision it right now? Ennis  -- sitting at the kitchen table, - - in Jack's room, - - looking out the window, - - finding the shirts, - - taking the bag from Jack's Mom.  The significance of this house can't be measured to us; let's be part of the solution to keep it around.

Let's get writing, people. And something must be done. But what and how. Must think about this.
Security cameras linked to owner's home or local police? A big new fence? It all depends on the location, you Canadians/Albertan Brokeaholics have to go scout it out for us and report back on the details of the location. How much will it cost to buy the house, I wonder?

Well, I looked it up on the internet and in the dictionary and both appear to be correct.  I'm sticking with the English spelling, just cuz I want to.   Tongue Tongue

If we seriously want to preserve the Twist house, we need to set up a trust and buy it. Any one in Canada interested in being a live in caretaker? That's the only way we can assure the house survives. More than that, we would have to accept repair to the house and property to a higher standard than they were in the film. Best I remember, the roof on the house looked like it was about to turn to compost. From certain angles the house looks like it has settled on its foundation. To save, and preserve this monument could easily run into tens of thousands of of dollars. Do we want to accept what it will cost to put the house back up in shape and restore the parts we saw in the film? If you want a caretaker to say with the place, other rooms in the house should be made a heck of a lot more livable.  But, if we were gonna do this, sending all those post cards is not the thing to do.

Seeing the owner gets what was promised by Focus, is not only the right thing to do, it would be a feather in our cap if we decided to take the house on in a preservation capacity. Hmmm... I wonder if it would be worth it to think of the place as a Bed and Breakfast?  I think I might drive to Canada for a piece of cherry cake. Could it make enough money to defray a good bit of the cost of upkeep?

On the vandalism... let me guess, souvenir hunters. Ohhh... Heath touched this wall!!! Grrrrr.... What, is some idiot gonna put it on ebay? Or is some fool gonna use it to display their shirts.... Gaaahhhhh!!!!

What about the house Ennis was living in when Jack came up after Ennis's divorce?
Just ah ponderun...

i agree with garry, with an addendum.

as i was reading the post, i thought the first order of business was to get an architect/contractor or whatever up there and be sure there was enough house to save.  i don't think it would be the same to build a new house LIKE the old house.

if you want to see the best example of this kind of grass roots action i know of, those of you in new england can visit the WILSON HOUSE.  it is a house one of the founders of AA was born in.  it was bought buy a committee of AA members and turned into a small hotel or large B&B and AA retreat, with historical papers and period furniture and books.  it is maintained solely by member cash and labor donations, and is veryinexpensive to stay in.  needless to say, there are daily AA meetings, but it would be an inspiration for anyone who wanted to attempt to save the TWIST HOUSE.  Grin Grin
