Hmmm, I would have said McDonald's.  Haven't they been at it longer, with outlets just about everywhere?

Yep, McDonald's has been at it longer, but Subway surpassed them in a big way!

Interesting note about the first subway restaurant from wikipedia:

"On the radio advertisement they had promoted the name as Pete's Submarines, which sounded like "Pizza Marines", so they changed the name to "Pete's Subs"; eventually it adopted the "Subway" name and [began] decorating the store with maps of the New York City subway system..."

Pizza marines!  (Not to be confused with Marina Pizza, in San Francisco!) Wink

Which Shirtless Guy Would You Take to a Fourth of July Beach Party?

At the end of the day on the Fourth of July, Jakey
was the winner in this POPSUGAR poll:

First I would have to get invited to a beach party which I would probably decline because I burn too easily and i usually end up feeling sick.

Second, I don't know any of the guys in the poll, so I would end up going alone anyway.

Hm, I'd take Jake even if he were an unknown. Nice combination of hair and muscles.

Re TDS story:
There's something about Jonathan Rauch's ideas that just don't sit right.

Quote
A ‘Kagan Doctrine’ on Gay Marriage

Rauch says:
Quote
She seems to be saying that protecting minority rights is the Supreme Court’s job description, but also that a civil rights claim doesn’t automatically trump majority preferences. This is something absolutists on both sides of the gay marriage debate don’t like to hear, but it has the virtue of being right.
[...]
Viewed in that light, the argument for upholding California’s gay marriage ban has merit — not because the policy is fair or wise (it isn’t) but because it represents a reasonable judgment that the people of California are entitled to make. Barring gay marriage but providing civil unions is not the balance I would choose, but it is a defensible balance to strike, one that arguably takes “a cautious approach to making such a significant change to the institution of marriage” (as the lawyers defending Proposition 8 write in one of their briefs) while going a long way toward meeting gay couples’ needs.   I say this knowing how deeply it stings gay Americans to let states make invidious choices.

If Mr. Rauch was paying attention to the Prop 8 trial in California, he might have seen how that "reasonable judgment Californians were allowed to make" was based on a lot of lies and animus about gay people.  It was in the trial.  That is NOT reasonable.  And Mr. Rauch himself is married to a gay man and he writes from some strange notion that we have to let the rest of America catch up with what he even thinks is right.  What kind of courage is that?  Isn't that like saying to Rosa Parks that she could sit in the front of the bus when WE feel comfortable with it.  I think Martin Luther King would slap Mr. Rauch across the face (non-violently of course) if he proposed ideas like that to him in the 60's.  Really, I'm at a loss for words after reading that article by so (supposedly) a learned and notable personage.

If Maggie Gallagher (from that awful NOM organization) is agreeing with you, you should really be ashamed of yourself.

Quote
Jonathan Rauch Urges Kagan to Uphold Prop 8
[Maggie Gallagher]
The column by Jonathan Rauch is a real act of integrity: How many men in a legal same-sex marriage would publicly call on the Supreme Court not to strike down Prop 8, at least not yet?  He calls Prop 8 unfair and unwise policy, but a judgment the people of California are entitled to make.  Rauch [...] recognizes that what he and others seek is not access to a merely legal construct, something created by government alone, but recognition by society of the value of his union as a marriage. Don’t short-circuit the conversation now taking place, he urges.  On that we agree.
http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/

I am sure any minority wants to wait for their rights while everyone else catches up so they feel more comfortable about it.  Tell that to civil rights activists in the 60's and woman suffragists in the last two centuries.  Mr. Rauch, I rebuke you.

he was quite mesmerizing...

This article I found does a great job of explaining the above sentiment.

The first sign of life in four years...

In response to TDS' (of July 13) question re Marilyn Monroe's last public appearance:  I think it was her last day of work on SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE (June 1, 1962, two weeks after singing to JFK at his birthday party).  But whatever...I am proud that I guessed that the silhouetted picture of the two men was Cary Grant and Randolph Scott!  What a beautiful picture of them...and the other picture of them is, too.  They evidently were so much in love.  What a shame they couldn't have been allowed to stay together.  (Yes, I know they COULD have...don't start--it's 3:30 in the morning and I'm too cranky over loss of sleep to quibble!)

Hi - Just got to TDS now:

1)  M. Monroe died in early August, 1962.  Her last public appearance was on the set of 20th Cent. Fox's Something's Gotta Give; because of her constant unprofessionalism and tardiness she was finally fired in mid-late July.
(JFK's b-day was in late May; that was when the the Madison Square Garden appearance occurred).

2)  The silhouettes are of C. Grant and R. Scott.  They lived together in the early '30's when both were under contract to Paramount, and many photos of them were taken "at home" and in other locations.  I always thought they were both sooo handsome, very good actors too.

3) This two guy "tongue-in-cheek" video you mentioned of BBM - does it make "fun" of it?  I really despise making fun/jokes about our beloved BBM.  I hope this so-called video is NOT like this.  And - no way are they close to good-looking in any way.

4)  And Heath as The Joker.  Irreplaceable, yes.  Oh, how I miss him.  Now I'm thinking of his and Jake's great performances in BBM.  How perfect they are.   Kiss

kathy   Smiley
p.s.  I don't  like the fact of those two guys (or anyone) making facetious "videos"  about BBM.  I hated it back then and I hate it now.   It is such a great film and I love it so much.
