So sorry to hear about Ms. Allen's passing.
We have much to be thankful for her existence.

Oh, that's sad.  I just saw "La Vie en Rose" last night
and saw that she did the costumes for that film and
wondered about her chances for some recognition there...

Jack and Ennis...a love that will never grow old

Folks, the current issue of Entertainment Weekly has a cover article called, "The 50 Smartest People in Hollywood". Gustavo Santaolalla is listed at #48 for his scores for BBM and Babel:

Just a quick, but deeply felt expression of gratitude, Dawn, for what is possibly the most wonderful review I've ever received for anything I've written.  I'm touched - and virtually speechless.

Thank you so much.

Really loving the weekly pieces on the deleted scenes.  I especially liked this from today's article:

As Ennis spots a brightly painted VW van, he says to Jack, “If it’s a hippie, we ought to scalp him,” eerily echoing his father’s celebration of Earl’s mutilation some 20 years earlier.  Such are Ennis’ delusion and self-loathing that the parallel completely escapes him.

IMO that inclusion would have seriously damaged the quality of the movie. We already know at the end what terrible consequences that Ennis' inability to overcome his internalized homophobia has had. For him to have suggested that he'd be willing to participate in a gay bashing would be overdoing it, to put it mildly.

Unless, of course, Ennis had tickets to a Grateful Dead concert and was suggesting making a hefty profit from them. But I doubt it.   Evil

Oh, I didn't even think of Ennis' statement as homophobic (related to gay bashing), I thought of it as an off-the-cuff closed minded statement(like "those damn weird hippies"), that showed the same kind of judgemental thinking that has ultimately kept him and Jack apart.  Not that I thought the scene should have been included, it seems clear that everyone thought it was out of syn with the rest of the film, but I did see that line as  perpetuating a kind of thinking that has blinders on.

Has there ever been a film where lines, including those cut from the film  Cheesy, have allowed for such rich discussion?

I love knowing about the deleted scenes but I agree with most who have posted that Ang Lee had pretty good instinct when it came to taking out what needed to be out.

IMO this scene (hippies) would have introduced the outside world into their "way the hell in the middle of nowhere" business, which we are better off thinking of as their special time rather than dealing with others, or judging others.  And the fact of them being hippies specifically introduces something the movie isn't really about -- admission and acceptance of change.

It would seem to destroy the fabric of the setting, Ennis' Wyoming is Ennis' Wyoming.  He may smoke a joint with Jack, which is enough to remind us how much the world has changed, but the relationship has not.

Absolutely, and also, with Ennis being so paranoid, it would not seem so plausible that he carries on seeing Jack in the middle of nowhere when there is a risk of stumbling upon other people. The whole point, as you say, was that their trips had to be totally away from humankind for Ennis to feel safe.

I just wanted to say how interesting I find the whole story of Bobby - the excerpt that was in TDS, what a brave man and challenging journey.  And how wonderful it is that his story has gotten wider coverage - wow.

Also - Ellen, really liked the title: "Look What Bobby Started" - look what he started indeed!  He'll probably never know how much comfort and inspration his story will bring to some people.

Daannzzz, loved your post! Finally someone who gets a part of me. Although I sing in a couple Choirs, and like Music, I cannot stand having it on in the house, and I don't buy many 'toys' either, I'd rather travel.......
