I had to edit a little bit of this story because Focus was mentioned, and in context of all the information we have, probably should not have been.

Sorry for the confusion!

Thank you, Ellen, Jan, and Sharyn for another great edition of The Daily Sheet. And I'm not just saying that because you mentioned the book project in it today.  Wink  You all always find the funniest, most important, most newsworthy, and most intriguing stories. Although I don't have as much time as I'd like to seek out all the cool nooks and crannies of the Forum, I feel like you all give me the real flavor of what's happening here each day.

Another technique I've used to keep up is to go to the main page and read the 10 most recent posts. The other day, they involved a discussion of salad shooters and salad spinners, weird dreams, a beautiful flower photo, some comments about how our parents raised us, a summary of the reasons Bush should be impeached, the difference between a couple of British and American terms, and a pumpkin cake recipe. Long way from Jack and Ennis, although we never leave them behind for long!

Bottom line is, I love The Daily Sheet!

Kitty Hawk, I love your idea of reading the ten most recent posts to keep up with forum news!  I'm so glad you like our Daily Sheet.

I am posting because I should have added the name of another contributor today.  I need to thank Mooska for his investigative reporting in tracking down the rumor that the shirts are on exhibit (believe me, this was not easy to verify - they are not listed on the museum's website, nor does anyone seem to answer the phone).  Mooska also tracked down the contact information for Tom Gregory.  TG is very busy screening his communications, as you can imagine, but he graciously took time to respond to our forum.

So that is my behind-the-scenes story at the Daily Sheet.  Thanks, Mooska!

This is a bit picky, but since our medium is, in fact, the written word you can't be too picky, IMO.  The Daily Sheet refers to the Marquis of Queensbury rules.  It is in fact the Marquess of Queensbury.  Marquis is the French spelling of a similar title held by the Englishman, the Marquess of Queensbury.  Just an FYI.
I'm not certain that's correct, TB.

Well, I looked it up on the internet and in the dictionary and both appear to be correct.  I'm sticking with the English spelling, just cuz I want to.   Tongue Tongue

Re: Internet Neutrality. Daily sheet, June 16, 2006.

This morning I saw a television message claiming that internet neutrality was an anti-consumer campaign on the part of Google to make the consumer pay more for the internet. That message is an outright lie; the companies that own the transmission 'lines', most notably SBC, which bought AT & T and then renamed the whole thing ''AT & T'', want to charge Google and other companies an extra fee just for using the lines and based on bandwidth, even though the use of the lines is already paid for by the consumer in other ways. This amounts to making the consumers pay twice for the same lines. Google and other companies and consumer groups are fighting against this extra charge by trying to get Congress to legislate guaranteed ''internet neutrality'', making the extra usage charge illegal.

Lance -- that is why this issue is so tricky!  The business friendly side (our congress) claims they want to leave things "as is" by not writing any new laws to protect.  The other side (the good guys IMO) want to enact some kind of regulation, so it takes action to keep things the way they are now, rather than inaction.  And you are absolutely right, the opposition is trying to muddy the waters, kind of like the "healthy forest" bill (which means it's okay to cut down trees) or "blue skies" (weaken anti-pollution laws)

I was pleased to see that you picked up the story from the UK about the severe sentence meted out to the two men who gay-bashed the 24-year old barman, Jody Dobrowski, to death on Clapham Common. But you cited the story in such a way that you missed the key point of it as a news item here in the UK.

The point is that this case was the top news story that evening on all newschannels. The reason for this is that the killers received a more severe sentence precisely because their crime was motivated by homophobia under new Hate Crime laws here in the UK. These provide for a high sentence for hate-motivated crimes against minority groups. This was the first major case where this has been applied so the publicity sent out a very powerful message from the courts that anti-gay violence will be dealt with severely and that it is not acceptable in the UK. And the police made a particular point of emphasising that they want to hear from gay men and lesbians who have experienced harassment of any kind. All good things to offset a dreadful tragedy.

Finally, the point of the story was also that it was Jody's mother who is being quoted in the latter part of your story, which I think deserves to be recognised.

So, thanks for highlighting the story but I'd appreciate it if you would draw people's attention to the above as they seem to me to be the crucial and most encouraging and significant aspects of the story which you've missed out so far.

Thanks

Anyone who can get to the Fox Theatre for the BBM screening on June 29th, do it!!

The Fox is one of the surviving 1920s "movie palaces", barely saved from the wrecking ball in the early 1980s.  Any film you see there will be a special occasion. If you can get a balcony seat, the 'special effects' on the ceiling of stars and clouds (the latter actually seem to move) might be especially effective during the outdoor scenes.  I recall it about took the top of my head off the time I saw Close Encounters from that vantage point.  Shocked

Hi,
I was glad to see the link to bluehorse's comments in TDS on Sunday. I really liked her way of expressing her views about BBM and summarising them (they also happen to align with what I think to a tee, but am completely unable to say in a remotely coherent fashion).  I guess that's why you posted it in the TDS, or was it a veiled dig at the usual level of discussion in the slash thread?!  Grin

I'm glad you enjoyed the piece --- I liked it too and that's why it was used.  BTW, the slashies also bring us incredible poems, haikus, limericks and a lot of creative writing - besides having a heck of a lot of fun over there.     Jan

Great Daily Sheet today as always!

How cool that BBM is going to get up in the big screen again in Atlanta! Very good news also about the BBM t-shirt store.

Nice to read about Auntie's anticipations re BBQ and to see little Killer getting ready for all the real or imagined Jack&Ennises. Loved that photo cap thread pic. Cheesy

PS: I'm supposed to send in some favorite Heath & Jake pics...

I just read in the "couldn't start my day without" daily sheet that there are illustrations in Close Range? My copy doesn't have them. Is there another edition of it? My copy is from Scribner's. I sure would like to see this.
Thanks a million for the Daily Sheet!
