I don't get to see too many plays, but I went up to NYC yesterday to see "The Best Man,"

Oh, I'm glad to know someone who's seen this play!  From your post it doesn't
appear, or at least you didn't mention, if you've seen the movie with Henry Fonda,
and a host of others.  I had read that it supposedly was the first time a gay bar
was shown in a film (although I have my doubts about that info), but if you ever
do see the film, I'd be curious as to how it compares.  My feeling is that the
play would be a lot more explicit than a film from 1964, I believe, would be.

Uh, wasn't that Advise & Consent (1962)?

I remember that scene so well, with Frank Sinatra singing in the background on the jukebox.

There's no gay bar in "The Best Man" play, although there is a rumor about something may have happened back during the war (1944)when "there were lots of men together and no women around."  It's now 1960, 16 years later.  But the "rumor" wasn't necessarily fact.  It was the way in which one candidate considered attempting to smear the other candidate, in response to a threatened smear about mental health issues.

Fritz, I can't remember now whether I actually saw the movie "Advise & Consent," or just read about it.  I don't think I have it here.

My teenage crush, who I am still in love with the gorgeous  NIgel Harman won yet another award for his role in shrek in the west end and when he accepted the award he thanked his girlfriend and 6 week old daughter! I was so shocked I was almost sick, he keeps his private life very private hardly anyone knew he had a girlfriend let alone a baby, I am so happy, he's so proud, I bet he's an amazing daddy! The 17 year old me was screaming 'it should of been me!!!!!'

MAURICE has been making it's way around several threads this past
week. A post yesterday in the TV thread led to me finding out there's
a stage version of the book/film that was in San Francisco this month:
New Conservatory Theatre Center
25 Van Ness Ave. at Market Street

Alas it has ended though!

But there are photos from it here:

I always thought Maurice would make a nice stage musical.
(The above is not a musical.)  Speaking of Forster, though,
a new stage musical of A ROOM WITH A VIEW has premiered
in San Diego this month.  (I love the film.)  I have a friend who
saw it and he thought it was a great production, but his one
reservation is that he wasn't all that thrilled with the music.
He felt it was all too much the same throughout.

All this talk of Maurice and Rupert Graves as Scudder, reminds me of one of
my favorite theatre experiences ever.  I visited London in 1989 with a friend
and because we liked Maurice and Rupert Graves, and the play was written
by Martin Sherman who wrote Bent, we decided to see a show we had never
heard of:

It didn't hurt that Vanessa Redgrave was in the cast, either.  It's two one-act
plays.  We got seats that were in the third row.  I was captivated by Rupert
throughout the first act.  Imagine my delight when a scene happens wherein
a male character comes over to Rupert who is sitting in a lounge chair right onstage
in front of us and, under a blanket, the other character reaches under the blanket
and masturbates Rupert to orgasm right in front of us.  During the intermission I said
to my friend that I wanted to look over at your face to see your reaction but I did
not because I didn't want to miss a thing!  Heh!  I wondered if the other actor ever
actually touched Rupert under that blanket during the entire run of the show. (Damn
blanket!)  I would have.  At least once. If I was the character Rupert was playing I'd
have encouraged it!  LOL!  I don't remember much about the second act!  HEH!

Most of the major acting Tonys went to film/TV stars. It's hard to know whether those are really talented people going to Broadway and earning those, or starpower blocking out real talent.

BTW, that insipid Clybourne Park was nominated for Best Play. God. That's a big credibility blow for me.

How do you feel about it winning the Pulitzer Prize two years ago in 2010,
in light of the fact they didn't think any novels this year were worthy?

I'm glad to see Norm Lewis is up for best actor for PORGY & BESS.  He and I were in an acting class together in 1983.  Go Norm!
