Thanks Mary!  Yes, Dave confirmed for me that nothing on the forum has ever been deleted, and that the salon blog comments have never been archived into a different format.  So the link Mary provided is what's out there.

Thanks for the response.  I'm referring to prior to when this forum went live 12/24/05.   If I remember correctly (it's been so long, I'm having trouble remembering), there was no particular format -- it was just a thread of comments.  Or several threads; it seems to me they would overrun one thread and have to start another.   There were pages and pages of comments with no organization by topic like there is now, as I recall.

Well, if you are really patient you can go back and look at the salon blog from back then, here's the link to the first one:
 http://rcs.salon.com/rcsComments/comments?u=1137&p=1685&link=http%3A%2F%2Fblogs.salon.com%2F0001137%2F2005%2F09%2F25.html%23a1685

- it's a lot to wade through as you said since it was one thread.  When one filled another was started.

mary

let me add, as one of those old posters, the last time i looked, there wasn't a direct link from the first page to the second, but there is a way around that.  don't remember how i did it but if you get stopped let dave or i know and we will figure it out.  from the second "page" on the links should be there.

this may prove to be a more useful link.  it is the master page with the individual links to each page.  occasionally a page would reach closeout before we created a new link.  greg and i, towards the end, were kept hopping and didn't always make it in time.

Hi guys --

apologies if this is old hat.  no patience for ocular searches of old pages.  the question, and it's an idle one:  what on earth happens to the servers late at night?   they seem to stay pingable but get so slow that they often time out, or lose a window 's connection entirely, sending a post to the bit bucket.  Some sort of maintainance going on?

If you can determine the actual times this is happening PM BayCityJohn with the info.  He made a call for it a couple of weeks ago and is trying to figure out what it is.

The webhost does server backups every night starting at midnight EDT. The forum slowdown lasts about an hour, sometimes an hour and a half.

According to them, the backup shouldn't be slowing down the forum as much as it does.
I've been running traceroutes for several nights during the slowdown and I don't see a problem there.

We are tweaking and cleaning things up with the database to see if it helps.

Please keep in mind that we are all volunteers.

If anybody has any ideas, please feel free to PM me.

When I am looking at a page, it does not update automatically. I have to leave and come back, to get new posts.

Is that normal, or am I doing something wrong?  Whut?

My guess is that's pretty normal.  Imagine, as you are sitting there reading a post while someone submits a post.  IMO It would be somewhat frustrating if it updated while you were looking at it.  The screen could change and alter the position of the post you are reading, etc.

Right.
But not a way to update without leaving the page?

You could try refreshing the screen on your browser.  I just went to Auntie's Diner where the posts come fast and furious and it seems to work.  Use the refresh button on your browser software.

Just curious, does anybody know if your age in your profile automatically changes with your birthday.  I don't think so but I thought I might ask anyway.

Yes, it will. There is no way to enter your age for your profile other than your birthdate... so therefore the age is calculated.
