Twistedboy,
Thanks very much for the response.  So "slash" = new fiction derived from previously existing fiction.  Got it.  One last question, where is it located on the forum?  Thanks!

Even after hanging around here for a few weeks now, I still haven't been able to figure something out.  The Daily Sheet brought it up for me again today, so I'm finally going to ask.

What exactly is the "Slash Thread" anyway?  I mean, my folks, they was Methodist.   Wink

You can also find a good definition and interesting info about slash in WIKIPEDIA (look for SLASH FICTION)

In this forum it's in the Juicy Bits section

truebrokeback, slash fiction is not necessarily a "changed" version of an existing story.
what is comon in all slash stories, is an element of sex, which is an integral part of the story. the term "slash" comes from the habit of indicating the persons the story is about and the persons who get "paired" in the story with a / (a slash). so, you'll see the story title, then maybe a rating (like NC-17 (for stories not suited for persons below the age of 17), M for mature etc.), and then the pairing, like in our slash thread, it will mostly be Jack/Ennis.

check wikipedia, there is a lot of informations about the origin of slash !

I had a sense that there was some similarity to slash and romance novels.  This seems to verify it.  This leads directly to another assumption I had made.  Most, although not all, slashinistas seem to be women.  Most romance novels are written for the female audience.  Is this a common characteristic between the two genres?

i have no clue, sorry. i'm neither too much into romance novels nor into slash. actually just stumbled over it when i desperately searched for a bettter ending for our movie to stop my tears. then started research on the topic. so all i know is in/ from wikipeda. though i actually got the impression that quite a few of the bbm fanfics is written by men. but i guess "recreational" writing (for a hobby) is rather a "female" thing....but again, i might be wrong.

Ack- finally a topic I can weigh in on, and I haven't checked in for awhile!    Smiley

Twistedboy and desertrat, thanks for responding and yes, you are both generally correct.  A few clarifications I might make:

Fan Fiction is fiction based upon existing characters from cinema, print or other media.
Slash is specifically fan fiction written that pairs male characters in homosexual relationships, very often explicitly so.
FemSlash - same with female characters.

There was just recently a debate within the slash threads as to whether BBM fan fiction can accurately be called slash, because some definitions of slash say that two normally heterosexual characters are paired together.  (i.e. Kirk/Spock)  But whether you call it fan fiction or slash, the result is the same.

The slash discussion thread can be found in the Member's Only - the Juicy Bits Board:

http://davecullen.com/forum/index.php?board=39.0

Also in that board is the Casting Couch - a separate thread specifically for posting photos of people to be cast in roles in the stories, as well as cover art developed for them.

As well as the Slash Links by Author thread -- specifically for organizing links to all the author's stories and chapters... an invaluable resource for the fan fiction seeker!

Monica

Edit to add:  The 'reason' it is called 'slash' refers to the convention that pairings are indicated by names separated by a slash -- Kirk/Spock again.  Why only the homoerotic pairings is known as slash, I have no idea because generally all erotic fan fiction notes who the pairings (triplings? etc) are:  Rogue/Wolverine.

Yes, we have a number of male authors and readers.  But it is widely recognized that slash is a mostly woman dominated... hobby.  My theory is that women tend to be more verbal and men more visual, but I've not seen anything that would cooberate that theory.  Wink

It happens to me a lot of times to find somebody's posts particularly interesting.
Is there a way to find out where his/her previous posts are?

You can find anybody's posts by clicking on their user name.  This will bring up their profile.  At the bottom of the profile you will find "Show the last posts of this person"  A list of all their posts will pop up.  If you click on any single post it will take you to the particular thread that post was made and you can see the full context in which that post was made.

The easiest way is to click on their user name - this takes you to their profile and at the bottom you will find a link that says Show the last posts of this person.

Click on that and you will see all of their previous post in reverse chronological order

I didn't know for sure, so I just tried and it worked.

Put these before and after what you wish to italicize:

     before and after

Jackie

mod: so you could actually SEE the characters, I hope!   Cheesy

still didn't work...  notBastet, use the quote button on this post and you will see the characters to use, ok?  Sorry.

This is hard to communicate because when you use the characters they actually perform italicizing for what ever text is between them.  Quote this message and read what Jackie wrote.  You will see a set of bracketed "i" around the words "in front and" and see what code you need to use.  Got it?   Wink
