We happened to be there the day these young women were graduating.  They were all dressed up in their finest.

This was the entrance to a restaurant!  I love the statue.  I'd love to have that statue in my yard or house.  (Well, it might be a bit big for inside the house.)  LOL

I love it too. And what a good picture!

I loved the Hanoi style of architect.  Buildings were built tall and skinny, and our guide said everyone wanted their building to be the tallest.  We also saw lots of buildings that had their date of completion displayed prominently on the front.  Those pictures are later in the trip.  I think I'll come to them eventually.   Grin

Oh, tyhank you so much for showing and for telling this.

I really like how you share it all here. Thank you ((((Beth))))) Smiley

Last one for now.  Don't these guys just crack you up!  I would have loved to get a picture of them without the woman walking behind them but I was afraid if I waited for her to walk out of the picture they would realize what I was doing and wave me away.  They just make me laugh!

Beautiful pictures of Nam and Australia, y'all!

Still, I have mixed feelings looking at the pictures of Hanoi. I'm glad the country has gotten over the war, but I still think of intelligence school and interrogation techniques. So not terribly pleasant, I'm afrraid.

yes, it was interesting to go there.  i was expecting a certain amount of cold shoulder treatment and contempt as we are americans but there was none of that.  (although my sister visited ho chi minh city last year and says it is not as easy going or as pleasant as hanoi).  the people were friendly and didn't seem to care that we were americans.  and it was interesting, as i mentioned, to go to the museum and see everything discussed from their perspective. i never realized that Ho Chi Minh (not his real name) did not originally intend vietnam to be communist.  he wanted a democratic society based on all the european countries he had visited in his travels as a young man.  but the russians (i think, or maybe the chinese) were the only ones who would support him so he was "forced" to go the communist route to gain independence for his country.  two sides to everything.

it was really interesting when we got to laos and heard our guide talk about the continuous bombing by us there.  he said, "A bomb fell every 8 minutes."  that sounds like a bit of an overstatement but when i start to read history, it could be true.  we bombed the hell out of that country.  in fact, i am reading a book series we discovered in the airport in laos (the first book is called The Coroner's Lunch by Colin Cotterill) which are set in laos right after the communists take over that country.  it is written by a british person who lived and worked in the country for quite a while.  it is fascinating to read the remarks made by the characters about the new communist rule.  again, two sides to everything.

which does not discount anyone's personal history during that time.  i'm sure there are some very hard memories for you.
