What makes the place scenic is the limestone peaks.  Our guide said they quarry so much limestone here that some of these limestone mountains are literally ground down to nothing and disappear.  It made for a lot of air pollution until recently they started putting in place some regulations.

Very beautiful!

I had not seen this before - they row with their feet!

It looks odd at first, but it actually makes sense!

Our legs are so much stronger than our arms.

I suppose it leaves their hands free for other tasks.  LOL   Now that is talent!!

Am I right in thinking they row forwards, rather than backwards like we do?

I think this is a heron.  Yes?

I believe this is a little egret.

Closely related to our snowy egret, and a type of heron.

And I have no idea what bird this is but we saw a lot of them.

Perhaps a common kingfisher?

sonja, thanks for the kind remarks.  and yes, they row forward.  it does make sense except that our feet can't bend and grip the way our hands can but that doesn't seem to bother them.  i thought the same thing- our legs are stronger than our arms.  plus, it allows one to sit more upright.  a full day of rowing our way is hell on the back.

and fritz, thanks for the information!  the only thing i know about birds is which ones i think are pretty.  LOL

Thanks for the clarification, Beth.

Yes, our feet not being able to grip was the reason I guessed they're rowing forwards. That way the heavy part of the motion will be pushing the oar away from you, which doesn't require any active gripping.

Pulling the oar towards you will thus be done while weighing the handle down, which will provide enough friction that the foot doesn't slip off.

Uhm, I'm not sure this detailed analysis of foot rowing will interest anybody, but I'm an OT so it's part of my professional way of thinking.

oh!  well, i find it fascinating.  especially after having seen them do it.  i also took a few pictures of a woman who was at least 7-8 months pregnant, rowing while talking on her mobile phone.  so funny but the pictures were out of focus.   Sad

I'm glad I'm not the only one interested!

Too bad those photos didn't come out good.

And here is one scene of the show.

I couldn't even imagine a water puppet show. Amazing.

And the puppeteers who came out at the end of the show.

Really nice. I love the dragon.

How wonderful it would be to see this.

I used to be a puppet maker... So a special thank you for sharing these.
