That's a common rationalization, for both the reality of the experience and for failures of empathy.  And it's not limited to women.  Some of the most virulent critics of omega-type groups are people who are members of those groups.

Well, again speaking for myself, I am an omega type member of a group of one. Rationalization, baloney. Rationalization is what women use to think of excuses for their individual situation in life. I'm not pretty. I'm not rich. Nobody ever gave me a break. My husband yells at me. My husband hits me. I have to support my children. Yada. Yada. Yada. Stop crying about how rough things are and take responsibility for your own life.

They were not whiners. They were DOERS. If they hadn't been, nobody would have any idea who they were.

-It's okay to whine but only if you're willing to do it publicly, particularly if you can whine from your own "bully pulpit"...?

I'm not sure what you're getting at. Seems to me, each of them saw something in her own life she didn't like and decided to do something about it besides complaining at the neighborhood coffee klatsch.

^^^ Exactly, and nicely capped.  The beef is with the minor whiners who do nothing BUT complain about their individual situations.

Activists like Anthony, Parks, Winfrey, et.al., speak for more than themselves as individuals, they 'whine' about securing fairness and justice on behalf of their own ilk and that of others.

** Arizona's premier gay sheriff, teabagger Paul Babeu, is finally dropping out of the race for Congress **

...

In case you're not familiar: earlier this year Arizona Sheriff Paul Babeu ("bab-yew"), the right wing anti-Mexican immigrationist who appeared in a campaign commercial with AZ Sen. John McCain dunning "illegal aliens," relinquished his position as co-chairman of Mitt Romney's Arizona Campaign - but only after the sheriff's Mexican immigrant boyfriend, Jose Orozco (r), out-ed Babeu in retaliation for threatening to have him deported if he didn't keep quiet about their relationship.

Apparently, boyfriend Jose had caught the sheriff cheating (not the first time, we're told) by setting a trap: a fake web page on Babeu's favorite gay website -- Adam4Adam --subsequently ensnaring Babeu at a local restaurant where he went to meet the new "potential" lover.

Paul Babeu ("versatile/top, cut, hung") is a well-known figure in SE Arizona, enjoyed wide popular support, even after being out-ed.

Here's a video of our newly-liberal sheriff in an interview with CNN regarding his views on "gay marriage"-
Sheriff Babeu on gay marriage
In an exclusive interview with Wolf Blitzer, Arizona Sheriff Paul Babeu discusses whether gay marriage should be legal.

Hi, Tony!

Sheriff Babeu will be on CNN, for an interview [see previous]... Also, is there something in the climate of Arizona conducive to unusual GOP zaniness?  And, where's Stan?

About the climate being conducive to GOP zaniness, I think you have something there! And the zaniness might apply to any other locale where one is able to wear T-shirts and bermuda shorts, all year 'round.

Since I'm not gay, black or disabled I am speaking as a woman period. And I'm tired of all the crying about the mean, disrespectful and oppressive treatment women receive. Especially in modern society. EVERYONE gets bullied at some time. NO ONE gets through life unscathed. I've gone where I wanted and done what I wanted all my life. So what if some guy said something derogatory or made more money for doing the same job? Big deal. My first husband had abusive tendencies. He hit me. Once. I was pregnant with our second child and I hit him back. He moved home to mommy the next day. I went to college on a full scholarship and didn't have to play basketball. I was in the Army during Vietnam and made rank extremely fast, faster than a lot of guys. I've done physical labor, worked in a couple factories as well as a bank and for a life insurance company, ran two companies in Oregon. After I split from my second hubby, I raised my kids alone and as LUCK would have it, they all survived and are living productive lives. Whining about how poorly you are treated doesn't change anything. Life is what YOU make of it.

Yes, but you are a strong minded woman who takes no nonsense, not everyone can be that way, for one reason or another. Some people are made stronger by adversity, some are destroyed by it. I see young girls everyday who really do believe, that unless they are they are thin, and wear sexually provocative clothing, and do what their boyfriends want, no one will love them.
Not everyone is like this, but there are girls who are young and vulnerable and need role models and people to encourage them.
Bullying will never stop, but it can be reduced and diverted by strong action and people standing together whether that be feminists, Dr Martin Luther King, or Harvey Milk.
Some people are strong, others can be made stronger by help and encouragement, and if you are in a position to do that, why not do it?

YouTube has a great example of that: what working moms at Verizon want for Mother's Day. Whine, whine, whine!
