i agree, i shouldn't have said it that way...i've deleted the post

yes, war is degrading, as you put it...i don't think we send our people to war on a whim...whoever said that if we just bring all troops home from every country, there would be peace, is, in my opinion, very, very wrong.  Men (mostly) will fight.

I just found this to back up my anti-americanism earlier point.

So true, only  think it goes much deeper than that...

E.g., they've not mentioned all of the medical and nuclear experimentation that the US has visited upon unwitting folks around the world, including our own citizens, without their consent... (Browse the late 'Steve Kangas' A TImeline of CIA Atrocities)  --Categorically we put the Third Reich to shame, in that respect...

And the fact that we are the only state sponsor of terrorism yet to drop nuclear bombs on two civilian populaces, and the fire bombing of civilians in two other major population centers, Tokyo, Japan and Dresden, Germany.

And, to the folks who cling to the notion that Saddam had to be taken out because" he was killing his own people,"  Who was Pres. Abe Lincoln and his generals killing? - Americans, of course, i.e., "his own people."

Never underestimate  hostile  appeals to liberal guilt.  And I'm saying that as a lifelong liberal.

With the world having shrunk the way it has, no one should believe for a nanosecond that Mexico or Canada would do any differently if circumstances over the past six or seven decades were different.  It's moral superiority for the Dollar Tree shopper; nothing more, nothing less.

President Obama's first campaign ads have been aired here in Virginia, and they are ok, except, at the end, they have a still photo of him looking idealistically, perhaps even metaphysically, up and off into the distance.  Not gonna work. Too dreamy.

Meanwhile, watching the GOP debate, this evening, I noticed how the candidates paused, all with the same look, as it was someone else's turn to trash them.  Well, I've never been to the Netherlands, or maybe it's in Germany, where they have a street for prostitutes, where they are in large windows, displaying their wares.  And it did kind of seem to me the candidates were doing the same, waggling their wares, then pausing, with the same expression, to see what the competition was doing.  Very strange.
Ron Paul was, of course, the exception.  He always seemed to be trying to remember his grocery list.

So far, I think Santorum is dangerous, because he actually believes his cult-ism.  Romney is someone who might be more like Gerald Ford: pragmatic.  Gingritch does have the fire of Ronald Reagan (who also was considered a scandal, for having had a divorce).  But there is something about Ron Paul, that causes me to respect him, despite my own beliefs that are contrary to his.
Meanwhile, it's a long way to go, and anything could happen.  I don't see things settling down for most of the year ahead.

Washington (CNN) -- In his last State of the Union speech before the 2012 election Tuesday, President Barack Obama will pitch a series of proposals and will address the topics of economic inequality and a government that should ensure "a fair shake for all."

A Democratic source briefed on the latest draft of the speech said Obama's proposals will include:

-- Tax reform so that wealthy Americans pay more and the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 expire

-- More refinancing for homeowners in trouble

-- Additional tax breaks for companies that bring back jobs to the United States

-- More clean energy incentives

-- Enhanced education and job-training initiatives, especially for high school graduates seeking technical degrees

-- Establishment of the so-called "Buffett Rule" that would set a minimum tax rate for people earning more than $1 million.
