I for one have no doubt that the note Dal left was a "Brokeback" reference.  

He was far too bright and subtle a man for it to have been anything else, IMO.

after thinking about this a bit more, I think it might have been like this--

Maybe, knowing that his loved ones would go through his clothing after he passed, and possibly thinking they might feel like Ennis -- looking for something of him in his shirt -- he decided to actually leave them something.

It's his way of doing a little bit better than Ennis and Jack could, because he knew their story, and he had a chance to prepare.

it is really lovely.
