We agreed on 13 out of 24 Mark!

Some comments:

ACTRESS:  I am so favoring Meryl Streep over Viola Davis.  I love Viola, but I just don't think
that role was enough.  Meryl was transformative.  And if she's the most nominated actress ever
she deserves more than ONE lead actress oscar that she recieved 30 years ago!  Hillary Swank has
two!  But I chose Viola above because on looking at the Actress race the last 20 years, if there's
two or three favorites, the one in a Best Film nominee usually wins.  And neither Meryl nor Michelle
are in one.

ACTOR:  If anyone can outdo Clooney in the personal charm department it is Jean Dujardin
and he's been making the rounds of Hollywood and charming the pants off everyone.  Clooney
does have an Oscar and he keeps saying he's not interested in awards really, so give it to Jean!
(Although I thought Brad Pitt did a career best in Moneyball.)

SUPPORTING ACTOR:  I don't get this love for Christopher Plummer in that role.  Not worthy IMO.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS:  I think Janet McTeer was heads above Octavia Spencer.

ORIGINAL SONG:
This category is an embarassment and what will be even worse is that the Muppets song is going to
win and it's the worst of the two choices.  It's not even the best song in the Muppet movie!

And on the return flight Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy: although I constantly confused by the turns of events, I also kept thinking to myself, "This is a really good film" - so stylish and satisfying somehow. How I love Colin Firth - but so many excellent performances.

I personally loved this film. You are right you have to pay attention in order to get it. The film goes from past to present without really any indication of doing so. ALL the performances were great.

Thanks for the picks, Lyle!  I'll write more later but for now, I totally agree with you and Ingy on the hoopla for Christopher Plummer in BEGINNERS.  I didn't like the movie and I don't understand all the love for his performance, either.

I would agree with this!

I'm not saying this is 1005, but have you ever noticed that in every
GM directed film there's someone who inexplicably falls down--falls
over their own feet and trips or something?

I forgot (or didn't know) they were doing it this way this year--they're giving
them out on April Fool's Day.     They usually do it the day before the Oscars.

Moving on from the Oscars before I forget this new question:

Has anyone out there seen BIG EDEN? I'm sure I'm the one of the only forum members who hasn't.

I had never even heard of it until yesterday!!

Is it worth watching?

Yes. It is worth watching. It is a good though not great movie. It has some great moments in it and it is and interesting idea. If you take it as pure reality it doesn't work but if you can look at it as a light fantasy then it works well. There are some good performances in it with a bit of an odd casting choice in one spot.
