Oh Jeff, how can you not swoon when they part in the rain in Paris--- and meet again at Rick's and their eyes meet when they hear 'Time Goes By' and...and when Paul Henried leads the band in 'La Marseillaise' and the Nazis try to outsing them ... and Rick and Claude walk off in the dark together to kick Nazi ass.... oh.. oh Cry

yes, all of that...it's wonderful

I always really enjoy GWTW, but, and here's an admission, I havn't ever seen Casablanca.
Mind you it was only a few months ago that I first saw The Sound of Music all the way through.

Wouldn't you know!  One of the most popular and loved films (and books)
of all time and this thread has a bunch of GWTW party poopers!  On
Valentine's Day yet!

Well, I've always been "who cares" about Casablanca, so there!    Smiley

Speaking of Irene Dunne, a friend of mine over the last year has
become acquainted with her grandson.

I've become appreciative of Irene Dunne moreso when I've seen her
films on the big screen.  I once read an article about why she isn't seen
as one of the greats of old Hollywood and they surmised it was because
that so many of her films were remade with the current stars du jour
that she started being thought of in the background.

Well you have met a "who cares" about both of them in me, Lyle!! Grin

Hey, I said it's a good movie. ...

How can I not swoon? Easy. Bogie was a great character player (absolutely love him as Sam Spade and also opposite Kate Hepburn in The African Queen), but I find him as plain-looking as a mud fence. I require a man to be much better looking than Bogie before there is even the possibility of swooning.

But I fell in love with Leslie Howard as Ashley.... Grin

Oh, God.  ... Roll Eyes  Leslie Howard was w-a-a-a-a-y too old for Ashley.

And I didn't know what to make of the scene where the blond (very handsome!) assistant gets rid of another man (lover? brother? family member?), sents him away from his home and then sits in the dark and cries.

Regarding the end, do you think that Haydon and the Istanbul guy (who eventually shoots him) also had a kind of love affair, or only friendship/attraction?

Spoiler alert on:  Highlight / swipe to read..   Vincent

1) Peter. Yes. Hot.  Yes. It was his partner / lover.  He had to shed all of his personal attachments, to protect them.

2) Yes.  They were lovers.

1. Yes, I was surprised.

2. I'll give it a try.

Thanks, Ing

I tried to watch "Casablanca" a couple times but turned it off. Then about 10 years ago I made myself sit through it and I really liked it. Not one of my favorites but a very good movie.
I still don't get the "Citizen Kane" love though. I appreciate all the good acting, great art and set direction and awesome cinematography but the story, for me, is just okay. But then again I didn't like "Raging Bull" (loved Cathy Moriarty though) or the English Patient either.

Now that you mention it, I don't either. A good movie, but for me nothing spectacular.

I've never seen Raging Bull or The English Patient. I think I'd like to see Raging Bull, but I have no interest in The English Patient.

Oh!  Embarrassed

Well, it's BEFORE the end. And not exactly the point of the story, only a detail.
