Great stuff, Michael. I have several versions of this and it is a wonderful song. Apparently it was Lady Franklin who was able to drum up enough support to send expeditions to find out the fate of her husband and his crew. She was quite a remarkable woman.

Apparently, ultimately, the crew died of scurvy, (leaving the cannibalism to one side), and I wondered why they died, when Eskimo's don't. It is because the indigenous population only very lightly cook their meat, so it still retains the vitamin C, whereas the Franklin crew, being of good British stock, well cooked their meat, which destroyed it. There is apparently evidence that they wandered around on the ice for up to three years before they finally succumbed.
