Cross posted from the "Pets" thread, and placed in each "chat thread".

Don't forget that "Mischief Night" or "Devil's Night" is coming.  Sickos will take unattended animals and harm or kill them for "fun" because of that night.  Animals owners, keep your pets inside the next few nights, or when they're out, keep a close eye on them!

Hiya!

Somber reminder of the day.............

I was just reading "The Meaning of Matthew" yesterday, and hope to finish it Monday.  NPH and David Burtka adopted their kids on October 12th, so at least now there's a happy thought associated with that day.

I always think a lot about Matt between now and December 1st.

I gotta say, from the little I've seen of this man, he runs a close second to Jake for scrumptiousness.

2010 Retrospective Survey

1. What did you do in 2010 that you’d never done before?

Read, write, or even care about fanfiction.

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I made only one, kept it (mostly), and plan to do the same next year.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Yes.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Surprisingly, no. It was touch and go for most of the year, but stable now.

5. What countries did you visit?

India and Qatar.

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?

Self-confidence and self-discipline.

7. What date from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

I’m not very good with dates. There are a few moments that I’ll remember for a long long time, but I don’t have clue as to when they happened.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Writing and posting “One Little Thing.”

9. What was your biggest failure?

It’s a tie, I think. There are a few biggies.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Nothing unusual.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Kayak.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

People who engaged in *honest* assessment of how they could make the world a better place, and then did it. And then repeated the process rather than resting on their laurels.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

Religious, political, and social extremists. And those who are willfully ignorant, callous, or both. Clearly, there’s a huge overlap between these two groups.

14. Where did most of your money go?

I hope savings/investments. But my mortgage company and the taxman might disagree.

15.What made you really really really excited?

Receiving the first comment on “One Little Thing.”

16.What song will forever remind you of 2010?

Probably the guitar lines from BBM.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder?  Happier
b) thinner or fatter?   Fatter
c) richer or poorer?  Richer

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Sitting and pondering the wonders of the universe, as well as the beauty of simple, everyday things. Appreciating my husband, my family, my friends, and my general good fortune.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Being irritated at stupid, little things that can’t be changed and don’t really matter very much anyway.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

Hosting family and doing videochats with those who couldn’t come.

21. How will you be spending New Year's?

Hosting an open house for friends and family.

22. Did you fall in love in 2010?

Yes, but with Jack and Ennis fanfiction.

23. How many one-night stands?

None.

24. What were your favorite TV programs?

Burn Notice and Last American Cowboy

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?

I’m not very good at holding a grudge any more. It’s just too much effort and there’s zero ROI.

26. What was the best book you read?

Sadly, I hardly read any books this year. Mostly short fiction and magazines.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Kid Rock’s riff on “Sweet Home Alabama.”

28. What did you want and get?

The simplification of life and the creation of more quality free time. But I’m still working on it.

29. What did you want and not get?

Untold riches, eternal youth, and assorted superpowers.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

The favorite film that I *saw* this year is Fantastic Mr. Fox.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I don’t remember what I did. Which means that it was either fantastic, mind-numbing, amnesia-inducing debauchery. Or it was nothing. I’m pretty sure it was the latter. I turned 39.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Destroying my husband’s Blackberry with my bare hands.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?

My preferred dress code involves some combination of pajamas, loungewear, baseball caps, and hiking boots. In deference to winter, I’ve added hoodies.

34. What kept you sane?

My dog. Who is always willing to remind me that things look better after a walk, a snack, or a nap. And if you take the time to explore the world around you, you will discover unexpected and wonderful things.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Jake Gyllenhaal. Never had a celebrity crush before. *shrug*

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

Incivility, hypocrisy, and extremism. Not exactly “political” issues, but if we got rid of those, many of the other issues might have a chance of being worked out.

37. Who did you miss?

My husband (he traveled a lot this year).

38. Who was the best new person(s) you met?

DCF folks.

38. Side question...who would I like to get to know better?

I will steal Chuck’s answer: Myself. Although I’m not entirely sure that I would be pleased with the discoveries I’d make.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010:

That the grass is not always greener on the other side. That I will never get the untold riches, eternal youth, and assorted superpowers I always dreamed of. But maybe the little ordinary things are better anyway.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year (any song from any year):

ARTIST: Muppets
TITLE: It's Not Easy Being Green

It's not that easy being green
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves
When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow or gold
Or something much more colorful like that
It's not easy being green
It seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things
And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're
Not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water
Or stars in the sky
But green's the color of Spring
And green can be cool and friendly-like
And green can be big like an ocean, or important
Like a mountain, or tall like a tree
When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why, but why wonder why
Wonder, I am green and it'll do fine, it's beautiful
And I think it's what I want to be

2010 Retrospective Survey

1. What did you do in 2010 that you’d never done before?

Went to three new states:  Florida (Tampa), Rhode Island (Providence) and South Dakota (Rapid City; Mt. Rushmore)

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I made some progress on my resolution to organize my house, but wasn't home enough to finish it.  I'll make the same resolution for next year.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

No

4. Did anyone close to you die?

No, thank goodness.

5. What countries did you visit?

none

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?

More time.  I was flying back and forth from Pennsylvania to Colorado multiple times starting in May, to be with my sister who was sick

7. What date from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

April 13, the day my sister had her first surgery for breast cancer

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Spending time with my sister while she was sick, and getting to know her better.

9. What was your biggest failure?

not keeping off the weight I'd lost the previous two years

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

no

11. What was the best thing you bought?

tickets to all the Brokie trips that I took this year (Tampa, Boston, Los Angeles).

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

My sister's, for her courage and determination.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

A neighbor couple of my mother's disappointed me a great deal, but I didn't let it depress me

14. Where did most of your money go?

trips

15.What made you really really really excited?

Seeing all my friends this year.

16.What song will forever remind you of 2010?

nothing comes to mind

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder?  Happier but more solemn
b) thinner or fatter?   a little fatter
c) richer or poorer?  a little richer, since my mother (who has come into some extra money) paid some of my travel expenses when I came to visit my sister

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Kept in touch with forum people, when I had no computer access

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Sitting in hospital and doctor's waiting rooms, but it was for a good cause, to keep my sister company

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

With family, which is unusual.  I usually avoid Colorado during cold weather.

21. How will you be spending New Year's?

With my mother, which is also unusual.  She has a tradition of letting the "old year" out the back door, and letting the "new year" in the front door.  She hasn't been able to do that in recent years because her balance and walking problems prevent her from getting to her back door, when she's alone, but it happens that I'll be able to open the back door for her this year.  I'll also be forced to eat black-eyed peas on New Year's Day.   Grin

22. Did you fall in love in 2010?

No.

23. How many one-night stands?

None.

24. What were your favorite TV programs?

On a weekly basis, some crime shows that I watched with my mother.
For the entire year, the NCAA basketball playoffs (my favorite team, Duke, won the championship)

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?

Not hate exactly, despite my disappointments with a couple of people like my mother's neighbors.

26. What was the best book you read?

Several mystery stories set in New York City, by Linda Fairstein.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

A classical music station in Denver, Colorado (no one particular composer, but it made it easier to drive across town repeatedly)

28. What did you want and get?

Trip to Los Angeles in December.

29. What did you want and not get?

Someone to "adopt" some of my history books which I don't plan to read and which are taking up too much space.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

Don't laugh:  I enjoyed parts of "Legends of the Guardians" (the owl movie) about as much as I enjoyed "Prince of Persia" (which was also good).
I really wanted to see Jake and Anne's new one, but haven't managed it yet.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

Too busy running around traveling between Colorado and PA to have a traditional birthday lunch with a friend, so I regret that, but I was in NYC several days later for a Brokie dinner.   I was 59.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

More spending cash, less rushing around.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?

Casual.

34. What kept you sane?

My friends, when family problems got to be too much.  And my aunt in Colorado.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Coach K of the Duke University basketball team.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

DADT

37. Who did you miss?

My father, who died in 1998.

38. Who was the best new person(s) you met?

Some new Brokie friends.

38. Side question...who would I like to get to know better?

Last year I think I said "my sister."  I got to know her a lot better this year, but that's still a good answer.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010:

There are more important things in life than the job (at least, if you have some money).  I'm referring to some of the petty restrictions which my sister continues to face about when she can take time off next year to attend to ongoing medical problems, after she goes back to work.  She has enough service to retire if she wanted to, if they make it too hard for her to get her choice of days from the vacation calendar, and if they revert to timing her bathroom breaks and so on.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year (any song from any year):

Oh bla dee, oh bla da, life goes on...
