Nice to see all of these, Uli.

But although I found both of them attractive and I felt very involved with their relationship, I didn't fall in love with them in anything like the way I did with Ennis and Jack - absolutely nowhere near.  I've never had anything remotely like the Brokeback effect before or since.

I have no idea what the Rober Academy of Entertainment Arts & Sciences exactly is, but you could vote for Tom Cullen and Chris New here:

Yay!! This morning when I voted with my Ipod only Tom Cullen was first, in the other category it was Viggo Mortensen ahead of Chris New. But what was interesting, Tom Cullen and Chris New had the exact same amounts of votes (59)... Cheesy

I was hoping I could vote another time from work, but somehow my work laptop is not displaying the page properly... Sad
But I should be able to vote later in the hotel from my own laptop... Grin

I know that's cheating a bit, but they both deserve to win! And shouldn't we be allowed to vote once for every time we watched the movie in the cinema anyway?? Cheesy

Good idea.  Cheesy
I don't take these online polls very seriously. Usually the film/person/whatever wins whose fans are online a lot of the time and very skilled at spreading the word and making other people vote for their favourite thing. And whose fans are also good at cheating.  I voted again.  Wink   Still at the top but Viggo Mortensen is getting close. Meh.

I still wonder what the Rober Awards are or the Rober Academy For The Arts & Sciences of Entertainment. Never heard of them before and there's no explanation on the website.  Whut?

@Uli Btw, a few days ago I saw Chris New's tweet to you.  Grin  Way to go!  Cool

For me 'Weekend fever' was different from 'Brokeback fever', too. And thank god it wasn't the same. It also passed a lot faster, I'm over it already.  Cheesy   But Weekend was the first film after BBM and also the only one apart from BBM in a very long time (or maybe ever) that had such an impact on me. I wouldn't say I fell in love with Ennis and Jack, though. Don't know how to phrase it instead. And I think me discovering BBM fanfiction prolonged the whole BBM effect immensely.

wow, this movie is well-loved!!

so, will DCF  soon be hosting a "WEEKEND" slash thread, like they do for MERLIN?   Grin Wink

I don't have much to say about the flick as I've not seen it yet...  Angry and I don't wanna read much because I am avoiding spoilers, but I did see the trailer and it seems quite interesting.. I don't know how I'd feel about the drug use... I can accept it, as long as its not too grim (like 'candy' with Heath)  Tongue

have you guys seen bedrooms and hallways? I don't know if it was a movie or bbc tv thing, but I met Kevin mc kidd the other day. and his wife. very nice couple. I had no idea who he was, but he had famous face, so I googled him.

sure enough, there were pics of him shirtless and everything.  Grin  he is on "grays anatomy" I think. or was. he's pretty prolific.

anyway.... he played a GAY guy in the bedrooms and hallways show. there are snog scenes on youtube. he was also in train spotting.

he is Scottish. pretty cute. could work on his glutes a bit, tho they're not bad for 38.  Wink

in other fanfair news, I have been painting a bit with gav Ross dales kid, king. it must be tough being a celebrity child, when the mom is not there 24/7. I can tell he misses her, he was very excited to report that she was going to be coming back after a trip. meh. I guess famous parents have to make sacrifices, and sometimes those sacrifices are the kids. I am not judging gwendolyn, but still. stop and smell the roses, while they are still fresh, you know what I mean?

Oh, one question! On Saturday we see Russell twice in the bathroom looking into the mirror...
Once after their "fight", after Glen tells him that he can't have a boyfriend right now and that he doesn't want them to fall out over this and once some time before...
Is the first time actually a "preview" for us of that later scene or does he actually go to the bathroom before to think - maybe about how he is supposed to handle the fact that he is falling for Glen and there is not much hope for them, cause Glen will go away?

I went looking for photos and found this one:

Err, is it possible that this is from the first scene? And is it possible that I never noticed before - even though I was wondering about both scenes - that in the first scene he is (half)naked and in the second one he is clothed?? Or is this another scene maybe him getting ready after work?? Hm, this isn't his bathroom, is it?? OMG! I have seen the movie 4 times and I don't know this??  Embarrassed Cheesy
Argh! The wait for the DVD is sooooo long!!!  Undecided Cheesy

Oh well, I shut up now... Cheesy

lmao!!  this is soooo much like the early BBM posts we are all so familiar with!!  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

what you gotta do is find a screener copy of the Weekend movie. that's what I did with BBM, back on feb of 06 -- the quality was shyte, but it definitely helped the addiction.  Wink

well, now my stomach is growling.

Not sure if it's because I'm hungry, or because of Russell's hairy beard and slightly hairy chest!  Evil

I've always thought a lot about the movie Bedrooms and Hallways. Like so many small Brit movies, I found the acting very convincing (who wouldn't with the likes of Simon Callow, James Purefoy and in her pre-Pride and Prejudice days opposite Colin Firth, the lovely Jennifer Ehle. I thought the ending somewhat of a disappointment but up till then, a super little movie. I rec. it very much.

I think I saw Bedrooms and Hallways, I definitely remember the title. Oddly enough I can't remember anything about the film, not even watching a video on youtube jogged my memory.  Sad  But I think I remember Tom Hollander. Hm.   Undecided

This book is coming out next week!

I've just got to read it!

I was reading a recent Entertainment Weekly and this item peaked my interest:

Grove/Atlantic Publishing, Inc. has purchased the rights to
FULL SERVICE: MY ADVENTURES IN HOLLYWOOD AND
THE SECRET SEX LIVES OF THE STARS by Scotty Bowers,
a former G.I. who turned tricks in golden-age Hollywood using
an L.A. gas station as his base.  He claims Cary Grant and
Rita Hayworth among his onetime lovers.

***

I can't find much about Scotty Bowers on the internet, but it sounds
like a book I would like to read!  About the only thing I can find about
it right now is this:

Scotty Bowers never acted in a single movie. But his story may cast a new light on old Hollywood by revealing the hidden love lives of stars like Cary Grant, Spencer Tracy, and Rita Hayworth—all of whom Bowers claims as paramours from his heyday trading sex for money.

Literary agent David Kuhn confirms exclusively to EW that Grove/Atlantic president Morgan Entrekin has bought the rights to Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars, Bowers’ memoir of his years spent as a bartender, confidante, and gigolo to a laundry list of showbiz icons. A GI who moved to Hollywood after World War II, Bowers describes how he and friends serviced actors and actresses on leave from nearby studios—using an LA gas station as their base. He says he later became an in-demand bartender who developed intimate friendships with stars like Katharine Hepburn, Montgomery Clift, and Rock Hudson, among others. Now 88 and living in L.A. with his wife of 27 years, Bowers agreed to tell his stories now that most of the celebrities he claims were friends and clients have gone.

“The book is a window onto the shadow lives of all these people who entertained us and made popular culture, but who in many ways weren’t what they appeared to be,” says Kuhn. “Scotty helped them to fulfill the desires that they couldn’t fulfill themselves.”

Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars is set for release on Feb. 14, 2012.

in fifty years, there will be tell alls about the very actors we speculate about today! yet despite these books and other revelations, you must know that there are truths that will never be told...  there are so many secrets out there, I'm sure.

i can picture this scotty bowers at the gas station. in those days, the petrol attendants actually washed your car windows. i'm sure many a gas man has rested his package on the side view mirror of an automobile, putting what was offered (or for sale) right there for the driver to see, or feel.

i miss those days.  Evil

scotty bowers, then and now:

Above, Scotty Bowers after his return from his first posting abroad (1944). Below, Bowers now 88, at his Hollywood Hills bungalow, where he lives with his wife.

New tell-all book reveals sexual exploits of Old Hollywood

Brooks Barnes writes for The New York Times:

Straight actors who wanted to pay for sex in the 1990s had Heidi Fleiss. Gay ones during the late 1940s and beyond apparently had Scotty Bowers.

His story has floated through moviedom’s clubby senior ranks for years: Back in a more golden age of Hollywood, a guy named Scotty, a former Marine, was said to have run a type of prostitution ring for gay and bisexual men in the film industry, including A-listers like Cary Grant, George Cukor and Rock Hudson, and even arranged sexual liaisons for actresses like Vivien Leigh and Katharine Hepburn.

Now, he’s talking.

Mr. Bowers, 88, recalls his highly unorthodox life in a ribald memoir scheduled to be published by Grove Press on Feb. 14, Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars. Written with Lionel Friedberg, an award-winning producer of documentaries, it is a lurid, no-detail-too-excruciating account of a sexual Zelig who (if you believe him) trawled an X-rated underworld for over three decades without getting caught.

“I’ve kept silent all these years because I didn’t want to hurt any of these people,” Mr. Bowers said recently over lemonade on his patio in the Hollywood Hills, where he lives in a cluttered bungalow with his wife of 27 years, Lois. “And I never saw the fascination. So they liked sex how they liked it. Who cares?”

“I don’t need the money,” he continued. “I finally said yes because I’m not getting any younger and all of my famous tricks are dead by now. The truth can’t hurt them anymore.”

Twenty-six years after Hudson’s death from AIDS and more than four decades after Hollywood Babylon was first published, it will come as a surprise to no one that the images the movie factories created for stars of the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s — when Mr. Bowers was most active — were just that: images. The people who fed the world strait-laced cinema like The Philadelphia Story and perfect-family television like I Love Lucy were often quite the opposite of prudish in private.

At the same time, a lot of what Mr. Bowers has to say is pretty shocking. He claims, for instance, to have set Hepburn up with “over 150 different women.” Other stories in the 286-page memoir involve Spencer Tracy, Cole Porter, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and socialites like the publisher Alfred A. Knopf. “If you believe him, and I do, he’s like the Kinsey Reports live and in living color,” said Mr. Tyrnauer, who recently completed a deal to make a documentary about Mr. Bowers.

Full Service at the very least highlights how sharply the rules of engagement for reporting celebrity gossip have changed. The sexual shenanigans of movie stars were a currency for tabloids stretching back to Hollywood’s earliest days, but studios and, subsequently, squadrons of privately hired public relations experts could usually keep all but the most egregious behavior out of the news media. Secrets were kept.

A degree of that still goes on, of course, but it’s much harder to keep details as salacious as the ones Mr. Bowers outlines under wraps. Now all it takes is one pair of loose lips for TMZ to beam all manner of embarrassing information around the globe.
The people behind the memoir, including Mr. Bowers’s agent, David Kuhn, and Morgan Entrekin, the publisher of Grove/Atlantic, insist that Full Service is not a prurient tell-all, but instead provides a window into an erased, forgotten and denied past of Los Angeles. In his pitch to publishers, Mr. Kuhn positioned it as no less than a tale about “the complex and conflicted psychosexual history of America’s soul.”
