What's Too Gay When it Comes to Teens?

"The latest storyline from long-running Australian television series Home and Away - in which a love affair develops between two female characters, Charlie Buckton (played by Esther Anderson) and Joey Collins (Kate Bell) - has message boards buzzing.

"In recent years, adult audiences have become accustomed to the portrayal of homosexual culture in TV programs such as Sex and the City, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Brothers & Sisters and films such as Brokeback Mountain, Capote and recently Milk. Home and Away, however, is set apart by its 7pm timeslot, its PG rating and its target audience of teens and young adults.

"The storyline, scheduled to run over several weeks , is not new to either Home and Away or rival series Neighbours. Both have explored this territory before. In fact, Australian television has seen the inclusion of gay characters since the early 1970s, when the adult series Number 96 first screened. Some viewers, however, still find it confronting to see homosexual relationships depicted during prime time before a young audience. In 2004, there was an outcry when Play School included a segment showing a young girl visiting an amusement park with her two mums."

O'Reilly on Penn... O Rly?

It seems that the easily-riled host of "The O'Reilly Factor" is at it again. This time, he's set his sights on Academy Award-winning actor Sean Penn, and states his conservative views when describing how they affect his entertainment choices.

"In a recent interview, Bill O'Reilly told the Hollywood Reporter that it's his "right as an American" to boycott Sean Penn's films, Reuters reports."He's a great actor," said the popular Fox pundit. "If you hire him, you'll get a good performance. I'm just not going to give a guy who gives aid and comfort to people like Ahmadinejad, Hugo Chavez and Saddam Hussein, when he was alive, my 10 bucks. That's my right as an American."

"Since the release Penn's Oscar-winning film, Milk, the actor has focused his political efforts on gay rights, vocally supporting gay marriage and lobbying for a "Harvey Milk" day to commemorate the work of the gay rights pioneer he portrayed onscreen.O'Reilly, who has been blasted for comments about the passage of California's Proposition 8, was mum on the subject of gay rights as it relates to his Penn boycott."

But not all readers of the primebuzz.kstar.com website agree with O'Reilly:

"And I have the right to boycott ... the O'Reilly Factor and FOX Noise, and to observe that those who do watch them so religiously are on a "fact-free" diet! I once was on O'Reilly's show, but that was so long ago that he actually was still politely letting guests disagree with him. Eons ago."

Remembering Osprey

RANCE SEARLE 1945 ~ 2009

See The Morning Shine (A Good Thing For You)

Look outside your window
The clouds have all gone away
I look inside my memory
I've never seen a brighter day
Everything that's wrong is gone
The morning's new, the sunshine's strong
With people working it out
And it's a good thing for me
To be a good thing for you right now

May I Keep You

By Betty (Neatfreak)

He was a friend of mine. Rance Searle (Osprey), briefly a rock star, always a bright star, died last Thursday after a long battle with esophageal cancer. I knew him only for a few years and almost exclusively from correspondence in this great forum.

Famous in the 70s for the pop hit,
May I Keep You, he became a wealthy businessman through common sense, innovative patents, and good honest work for his Bloom Master Planter company. He was brilliant, acerbic, hilarious, gentle, opinionated, witty, angry, loving, profane, compassionate, faithful and strong. He was a magnet to anyone who met him online and in person. He was the de facto host of the "Gay and Christian" thread, and we gathered around to hear what Rance would say next on whatever subject arose.

On hard work:

I came from a wealthy family but that didn't change the fact that when I was eight years old Dad led me and my two little brothers and one little sister into the bank and made us take out a note for $18,000 to buy 1,500 head of sheep. We each had to sign on the note and Randy, my youngest brother, was only five years old but mom had taught him to write his name. From that day until we all graduated from high school, those sheep were our responsibility. We branded them, we sheared them, we tromped the wool, we put the breeding harnesses on the bucks in the fall and we drove them from the headquarters ranch to the big ranch, a distance of 22 miles every spring and back every fall. We lambed them out, we docked them, which means cutting their tails off with a sharp knife and removing the testicles of the male lambs by cutting the end off their little sack and pushing the sack back and pulling the testicles out with your teeth.

We worked like slaves. Yes, we made a lot of money with those stupid sheep but we were not a bunch of pampered rich kids, not by a damn sight. We were taught from day one that wealth was a huge responsibility, not a ticket to ride. Those lessons stuck with me and with my siblings as well. I have that god damned bank note in a frame hanging in the bar at the house. It is one of my most treasured possessions. Those four little childish signatures on a note for $18,000 from a time when that was a hell of a lot of money. Each spring when we had shipped our lambs we would all trudge into the bank together and pay on that note. It took us only three years to pay it off. God how I hated those sheep. They are the stupidest animals on the face of the earth and they were damned rough on a budding gay kid.

But the important thing is what they taught me. They taught me that hard work is one of life's greatest blessings. I love the way a hard day’s work makes me feel. I love having my hands dirty and standing back and feeling good about what the day has done.

It was Rance who first made me deeply aware of the damage the church, Mormon and otherwise, has done and continues to do to the LGBT community. He told stories of pain, alienation, surrender, and even suicides of faithful young gay men who could not reconcile the message they were hearing with the person they were made to be. He carried a lifetime of guilt, wondering if he could have helped those whose pain became too much to bear. And in his most recent years, he became a beacon of hope to young men who found their way to his open door and heart. He and Marty, the love of his life, lived openly in Utah, defying anyone to call their union less than love, their commitment less than any marriage authenticated by law.

On the church:

We could all tell these kinds of stories all day long. It is so easy to hate and to blame but in the end, we must rise above it. Rising above it is all we have. We must each find a way to emulate Him, and keep our eyes on Him and not the tide of misunderstanding that so often rises against us. In the end we should not be deprived of the Church because so many in it don't have a clue. It is just as much our church as it is theirs, it is there for us, for all of us, and the more understanding I gain, the more I realize that Christ would welcome me to the arms of the Church, and He is the only one who counts at the end of the day.

Rance was a joy to witness and a challenge to engage. I was lucky to meet him in person a couple of summers ago at the Brokeback Barbecue, just before he became ill. We are all richer for his life and I am grateful for his brief friendship.

On the New Year:

I also want to wish everyone a WONDERFUL AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR, FULL OF LOVE AND FREE OF HORSESHIT.

Rest in God’s arms tonight, Rance. We keep you in our hearts, full of love and free of horseshit.

The Reviews Are Streaming In

"'The definitive account, however, will likely be Dave Cullen's "Columbine," a nonfiction book that has the pacing of an action movie and the complexity of a Shakespearean drama....Cullen has a gift, if that's the right word, for excruciating detail. At times the language is so vivid you can almost smell the gunpowder and the fear. ... The Columbine killers were a strange and deeply disturbed pair, right out of a Truman Capote book. We've heard plenty of the details about Klebold and Harris—their fixation with the Nazis, their lust for violence, the homemade tapes in which they laid out their grand scheme for us to watch later—but Cullen, despite all odds, manages to humanize them. ... Cullen also debunks some of the biggest fallacies.'"

Message From BrokenOkie

Like life itself, the Ultimate Brokeback Forum is a journey -- sometimes there's a steep hill to climb, or a stream to ford. Once in a while, there's a day to coast and just enjoy the scenery. There are junctions and intersections along the way that give us the opportunity to choose a direction, but the journey continues and we never know what's over the horizon until we get there.

As you know, Melisande recently stepped down as Chief Moderator, and I was asked to take her place. She's now in the illustrious position of Senior Advisor, and will be handling affairs on that level. I look forward to serving the forum as your new Chief Moderator, and hope that the roads we travel together continue to be enjoyable, thought-provoking and rewarding.

Changes on the Horizon

The staff of The Daily Sheet would like say thanks and bid a fond farewell to our very own MissYouSoMuch,
and who has been editor on the staff of TDS for the past several months. We thank you for your time
and generosity in helping to create each edition, and for your diligence through thick and thin.
It's not really goodbye, because we'll see you on the forum ~ but be good, and have fun!

Post of the Day

Here is a sign of encouragement -- despite the inception of the forum over three years ago, there seems to be a never-ending interest in the movie as time goes by. We continue to attract new members who feel the same, or similarly, as we do about Brokeback Mountain. Here's a chance to welcome new member irisheyes, who posted recently in How Brokeback Affected Me.

Hi everyone,

I've just discovered this amazing site, and I want to make my first post one of general thanks to everyone who has contributed to it - it's fantastic so see such thoughtful and insightful discussions about what is, without doubt THE best film /book, ever. As a guy living in Ireland I am struck by the universal nature of the themes expressed in BBM. Whilst the scenes mayhave been set circa five thousand miles away from me, the emotions/prejudices/general story lines could have been written about my neighbourhood!

As a longstanding fan of BBM, I was incredibly moved by it right from the first time I saw it - so many echoes of my own life that it's scary, but heartwarming in a kind of way to realise I'm not actually alone in my situation .....

I intend to take some time to read through all the threads and no doubt learn alot more about the multi-faceted BBM than I've picked up myself to date.

Once again, thanks for such a great site - I wish I'd found it years ago.

Coz.

A hitman known only as D is blackmailed into killing Jack, but when he tracks him down, his weary conscience won't allow him to murder an innocent man. Finding in each other an unlikely ally, Jack and D are soon on the run from shadowy enemies.

Forced to work together to survive, the two men forge a bond that ripens into unexpected passion. Jack sees the wounded soul beneath D's cold, detached exterior, and D finds in Jack the person who can help him reclaim the man he once was. What You Never Knew About Columbine

"As a Salon reporter, Dave Cullen exploded myths about the tragic school shooting, now the subject of his new book. He talks about what the media bungled -- and what still surprises him."  -- Joan Walsh, Editor-in-chief, salon.com

"Dave Cullen's Columbine is a chilling page-turner, a striking accomplishment given that Cullen's likely readers almost certainly know how the tragic story ends. Twelve students and one beloved teacher died at the suburban Denver high school on April 20, 1999, the worst school shooting rampage until two years ago, when Cho Seung-Hui slaughtered 32 classmates at Virginia Tech.

"I know more about the Columbine story than most of Cullen's audience: I was Cullen's editor at Salon 10 years ago, on that awful day when the cable networks told us teenagers were dying in Littleton, and he told me over the phone he'd head there immediately. Little did either of us know then that he'd still be at Columbine a decade later.

"So I can't be dispassionate about this book. I will point to raves from Time and Newsweek before offering my own personal observation: I knew Cullen was a dogged reporter and a terrific writer, but even I was blown away by the pacing and story-telling he mastered in Columbine, a disturbing, inspiring work of art."

Atomic Bomb Dropped on DADT Repeal Hopes

Dave was sent this email by a friend, and we've posted it here in hopes of bringing attention to this very real and current situation:

Dear Friends,

An atomic bomb was dropped yesterday on the hopes of repealing DADT (Don't Ask, Don't Tell) in the form of an unprecedented letter signed by over 1000 retired but still actively homophobic high ranking military officers. The ease with which its author Elaine Donnelly is mocked, the ease with which its arguments can be empirically disputed, are irrelevant to a Congress looking for camouflage for their own homophobia and/or cowardice in the face of their constituents' prejudice and ignorance. Far from the "Will & Grace Generation," its members have the highest average age of any Congress on record.

Even before this bomb dropped, barely a fourth of the House of Representatives had agreed to cosponsor Rep. Ellen Tauscher's DADT repeal bill. Strangely, even she didn't show up for an SLDN rally in front of the Capitol to generate public support for her own bill. Perhaps it was because she is now effectively a lame duck after having been nominated for a State Department job. Unfortunately, again, even before this bomb dropped, I've heard of none of her colleagues rushing forward to grab her baton.

Even before this bomb dropped, no companion bill in the Senate had yet been introduced. After years of searching for the right "moderate" sponsor, apparently Sen. Kennedy is considering introducing it himself IF he can find an appropriate Republican cosponsor. We have the greatest respect for him; he has become an unparalleled champion for LGBT equality in the Senate, but his fragile health makes such a strategy equally fragile, and, without Executive leadership, this bigotry Blitzkrieg makes it futile.

Even before it dropped, the fiction we wanted to believe that President Obama was actively working behind the scenes toward repeal exploded Sunday when the Secretary of Defense revealed that they've barely discussed it and that he, and apparently the Commander in Chief, thinks it should continue to be "pushed down the road."

Even before it dropped, only aggressive action by the President could have possibly persuaded Congress to repeal in the same way he has lobbied for the stimulus package and other controversial issues on his agenda. For whatever reason, he left the ground unguarded and the ruthless enemies of equality have overrun it.

The day thirty-four years ago Leonard Matlovich (shown in photo) was discharged from the Air Force simply for being gay, he held a Kennedy Bicentennial half-dollar up to the TV cameras and told the nation:

"It says '200 Years of Freedom'. Maybe not in my lifetime, but we are going to win in the end."

If you understand that no issue still has the power to advance progress in every other area affecting LGBT Americans that repealing DADT has, if you care for all of those who were discharged before and since Leonard, for those carrying on his battle in the courts, for those still being forced to serve in silence, for those in the process of being discharged this very moment, please immediately write the President through the URL below and demand that he finally keep his repeated campaign promise by PUBLICLY dismissing this letter while calling on Congress to repeal DADT and ordering Secretary Gates and the Pentagon to begin preparing for it. Is thirty-four years not long enough?

DADT Repeal Bill Refiled

"Legislation to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the ban on gays serving openly in the military was filed Monday in the House of Representatives.

"The last attempt to void the Clinton-era law died at the end of the last Congress.  The new attempt was filed by Rep. Ellen O. Tauscher, a California Democrat. The Military Enhancement Readiness Act (MREA) repeals the ban, replacing it with new provisions prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation in the Armed Forces. Last year, the MREA had 149 bipartisan cosponsors.

'“This law has failed our country and our military for 15 years,” Tauscher told an afternoon news conference. “It harms military readiness and discriminates against patriotic young men and women who want to serve their country. It’s time for Congress to right this wrong.”'

Fiction’s Other “Jack Twist”

By Marge_Innavera

Recently I re-read a book by Dean Koontz, one of my favorite authors, and did a double-take when a character named "Jack Twist" was introduced.  He's one of the main characters in Strangers, a story similar to Close Encounters of the Third Kind with more of an edge.  Like Close Encounters, this story has a number of people become obsessed with particular images and irresistably drawn to an isolated motel in Nevada -- a place they believe they've never been, but they turn out to be mistaken.

Jack Twist is typical of many of Dean Koontz' characters: a person of integrity and capable of great love and great loyalty whose life has been set adrift by personal tragedy.  In Jack's case, he was formerly a member of the US Army Rangers who is part of a mission-gone-awry to an unnamed Central American country. Jack spends over a year in a brutal gulag ("that had no official existence") before he and his fellow Rangers realize that their country has abandoned them for reasons of political expediency.  After an escape and return to the US, he and the other survivors discover that they have been made official scapegoats and their careers are over.  At the same time Jack discovers that his wife has been the victim of a brutal attack and left brain-damaged.  Out of bitterness, alienation and a need for funds for his wife's care, Jack becomes a master thief, a sort of non-homicidal Joker, until the odd nightmares start up.....

Cover illustration for Strangers.

Koontz' Jack Twist isn't any better-looking than Annie Proulx'; in fact, "Not one feature or aspect of his face could be called handsome". Worse, Jack has a cast in one eye and "most people could not talk to him without nervously shifting their attention from one eye to the other, wondering which was looking at them when in fact both were. When he smiled he looked clownish and when he frowned he looked sufficiently threatening to send Jack the Ripper scurrying for home and hearth."

Strangers was published in 1986, a little over a decade before Brokeback Mountain.

Outrage Over Movie Showing

Things are getting heated down under. While showing Brokeback Mountain seems to be acceptable fare for college students, there is a distinct difference between university age adults and middle school and high school-aged children:

"A Noosa high school is under fire for showing Year 10 students the homosexual cowboy movie Brokeback Mountain as part of their studies and failing to get viewing permission from one parent.

"According to a family friend of one Noosa District High Year 10 student, the subject matter was so distressing he felt physically ill.

'"A friend’s son was in this class and was very upset and angry telling me about it and it really got me angry too,: said the woman, who did not wished to be named. ... Her son was upset about having to watch it and came home feeling nauseous.

'“The film not only contains, in my opinion, very detailed and real sex scenes both homosexual and heterosexual, but betrayal, marriage breakdown, hopelessness, unhealthy relationships, aggression and isolation and needs to be viewed with a maturity that a 14- or 15-year-old does not have.”

Gay Cure Therapies Still Used by Few in UK

"A sixth of British therapists said they had tried to help gay, bisexual and lesbian patients become heterosexual, even though evidence suggests such therapies can be harmful, according to a survey released on Thursday.

"Michael King of University College London, who published his findings in the journal BMC Pyschiatry, said the number of therapists who said they had tried to help a person change their sexual orientation was surprising.

'"There is very little evidence to show that attempting to treat a person's homosexual feelings is effective and in fact it can actually be harmful," King said in a telephone interview. Such an approach could provoke greater anxiety and confusion.

"The survey showed that 17 percent of therapists and psychiatrists working in Britain had sought to help their patients reduce "gay or lesbian feelings" through therapy, the researchers said.

"Treating homosexuality as a mental illness was more common in the United States and Britain during the 1970s and 1980s, when so-called "aversion" therapy was in vogue, he added."

Columbine Hits the UK

Dave's agent sold the rights to Columbine to a publisher for instant publication as a trade paperback in the UK. In fact, it should be in bookstores by the time you read this. This contract also includes Ireland, Australia, etc., but may require a bit longer to physically get the books there.

After Dave completes his US book tour, he will be heading to the UK, probably in May.

If you see the book or any reviews of it in your country, will you let us know?

The Reviews Keep Coming In

"Comprehensively nightmarish . . . Cullen's task is difficult not only because the events in question are almost literally unspeakable but also because even as he tells the story of a massacre that took the lives of 15 people, including the killers, he has to untell the stories that have already been told . . . Should this story be told at all? There's an element of sick, voyeuristic fascination to it--we don't need an exercise in disaster porn. But Columbine is a necessary book. . . . The actual events of April 20, 1999, are exactly as appalling as you'd expect, and Cullen doesn't spare us a second of them."

WikiWhat?

It's amazing what you can find on Wikipedia these days. Do you wiki? is a question asked in chat rooms across the world, almost as popular as the term, Google it.

"Wikipedia ... is a free,[5] multilingual encyclopedia project supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Its name is a portmanteau of the words wiki (a technology for creating collaborative websites, from the Hawaiian word wiki, meaning 'quick') and encyclopedia. Wikipedia's 12 million articles (2.8 million in the English Wikipedia) have been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world, and almost all of its articles can be edited by anyone who can access the Wikipedia website.[6] Launched in January 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger,[7] it is currently the most popular[3] general reference work on the Internet.[8][9][10]"

All of that from Wikipedia on Wikipedia itself. With little blue bracketed references, of course.

Which brings us to today's WikiWhat? -- the entry for Brokeback Mountain. (The movie, not the short story.) We may as well start with something we're all familiar with here on the Dave Cullen Forum. But what will you find, as the encyclopedia's pages are updated continually? Will the Dave Cullen Forum be mentioned? What about that Gene Shalit? Fanfic or slash? Hmmm... You ever wonder about the sheep?

One thing's for sure -- you'll find a listing of all the awards the outstanding movie has earned. There's also a short list of other movies in which it was parodied. There are updates needed in that department: --  The Simpsons included their take on Brokeback in The Hee-Hawed Couple episode, and the comedy movie, Scary Movie 4, included a send up as well.

Doodler comes back with: The guy's rich... his lawyer will sweep it under the carpet.

To which Ennis Del Mark comments: The defendant probably would have gotten off (again?) if only the case had been tried in California. After all, the state motto is EUREKA!

Doodler retorts: I'm sure it was a Dyson DC15 know as the Dyson "ball" because, quoting from their ad, "the ball gives the DC15 the ability to pivot and twist into spaces with less effort by its handler." Every ball needs a handler.

And Passion ends the exchange with: The guy and his vacuum actually made our local news last night! The story was followed by the Pull Up Your Pants Day story! Seriously, I about fell out of bed laughing!

Writing Columbine

"It took me ten years to write a book on the Columbine massacre. I struggled with a mild form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) for the first year, and then all that seemed behind me. Seven years into the process, it knocked me on my back again. It was pretty clear why-except for one disturbing element.

"It began in the late summer of 2006, when I wrote the toughest chapter in the book, ten pages detailing the hours Coach Dave Sanders bled to death in Science Room 3. He was the only adult killed, and only because he ran toward the danger instead of away. He spent ten minutes herding kids to safety, and then he was gunned down. Two eagle scouts tore their shirts up to seal his wounds off, and kept him resuscitated for over three hours. They pulled pictures of his wife and children from his wallet and said, "These people love you. This is why you need to live." It wasn't enough."

Group Revives Effort for a Harvey Milk Stamp

"An online effort is under way to honor slain LGBT rights hero Harvey Milk with a U.S. postage stamp in time with what would have been his 80th birthday on May 22, 2010. ...

"State Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) is hoping the movie's success will convince Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign his bill into law this year. The governor vetoed a similar bill last year, saying efforts to honor Milk were best left to local efforts.

"Now comes a Facebook group known as Honor Harvey Milk with a U.S Postage Stamp. It had close to 9,000 members from around the nation as of last Friday, including Milk's gay nephew Stuart. Ohio resident Daniel Drent launched the group earlier this year and is hopeful approval of a Milk stamp can come in time to coincide with Milk's birthday next spring.

'"I was online one night and had just recently seen the movie Milk again, and it kind of hit me. It is time we honored the work he has done and the pride and change he started for us," said Drent, a gay man who lives in Cincinnati and has seen Milk five times.

"The Facebook group has 18 officers in cities across the country promoting the Milk stamp idea. In San Francisco, Don Spradlin is working to raise awareness of the campaign in the Bay Area.

'"I think Harvey Milk should get a stamp, a holiday, and a highway and whatever else," said Spradlin, who turned 62 last Thursday. "The [LGBT] movement is maturing and part of that maturation is to identify heroes and leaders and he is our guy. No matter what you think about Harvey Milk as a person he has become a symbol. It is really important we have those heroes."'

The Facebook group, Honor Harvey Milk with a U.S Postage Stamp, can found at facebook.com.

Dan Nicoletta Interview

Before it disappears and you can't find it, why not check out the first podcast on the Dave Cullen Forum? Michael Flanagan sat down with Dan Nicoletta to discuss his life and the experiences he had while he knew Harvey Milk and worked at his camera shop on Castro Street. Topics they cover include Harvey's roots in the beat movement and his interest in avant garde theater and music (such as Sylvester and the Cockettes), and Harvey's work to preserve his community.

Things that you may find out from the interview that you wouldn't know from Milk include the role that women played in Harvey's life.  And what exactly does Mr. Nicoletta think about questions regarding Dan White's sexuality?

The interview was conducted before Milk won Independent Spirit Awards and Academy Awards - and before the DVD (with additional material featuring Dan Nicoletta) was released. Take some time to celebrate how our forum has grown and see the type of people who want to share their stories with us.

Remaking the Castro Clone

Sketch by costume designer
Danny Glicker
Milk and Levi's help bring the most famous gay look of the ’70s back to life.

“Levi’s 501 jeans. Skin tight. Sanded down at the knees and crotch for that perfectly worn-in look. Third button unbuttoned to create a bit of allure. T-shirt, also skin tight. A Levi’s snap-front plaid. That was the uniform of the Castro clone, the gay fashion icon spawned in the ’70s that -- with surprisingly minor evolution or alteration -- can still be seen on the streets of San Francisco today.

“Danny Glicker, thankfully, is in love with the look. As the costume designer on Milk, Gus Van Sant’s biopic of the slain civil rights leader Harvey Milk, Glicker had to outfit hundreds of actors, from leading men Sean Penn, James Franco and Emile Hirsch to an army of extras, all dressed to span a full decade’s worth of fashion do’s and don’ts.

“Period films always present challenges to their costumers, but those based on true stories are that much more complicated. Glicker was saddled with another great expectation while preparing the highly anticipated film: Milk’s characters are not only real, they lived during a time many viewers can still recall themselves. And Milk owned a camera shop and lived an incredibly well documented life, which took some of the guesswork out of the equation, but also meant that there would be no excuse with eagle-eyed fans for anything less than absolute authenticity. ...

'“When I started reading about what people wore,” adds screenwriter Dustin Lance Black. “I thought, What was that Levi’s clone look about? It didn't take much to realize that it was about a group of people who had been called ‘pansies’ and ‘fags’ reclaiming their masculinity and being ‘men.’”

“That held true even when going butch went beyond the basics. “I remember reading someone complaining that the guys were actually going too far with it -- trying to be too butch,” actor James Franco, who plays Milk’s longtime lover, Scott Smith, told Black in his Out cover interview. “I saw a lot of guys from the Castro where they [actually] looked like construction workers.”'

Getting Naked

A study of nudity in Milk, The Reader, and Watchmen.

"It's interesting to hear an audience’s reaction to naked people onscreen. When Hanna (Kate Winslet) began to undress her newfound captive in The Reader, and then dared to stand behind him naked, and the audience gasped. When Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup) revealed his blue penis in Watchmen, many (guys, especially) laughed. When Harvey Milk (Sean Penn) and Scott Smith (James Franco) passionately kissed in Milk, the audience watched silently. Those reactions certainly depend on the audience, but they also reveal something about these films’ uses of nudity.

"In Milk, director Gus Van Sant exposes two male bodies together to acclimate viewers to homosexual intimacy far more successfully than more mainstream-minded, gay-themed films like Brokeback Mountain and Philadelphia. Viewers of Brokeback Mountain could think, “These are two closeted guys having an affair, so they’re not like me.” The sexual content was generally rough, animalistic. Watching Philadelphia, viewers could think, “This guy’s dying of AIDS, so he’s not much like me.” And the film contained scarcely any nudity. But in Milk, tender, funny, playful romantic scenes make it easier to identify with the characters onscreen. Van Sant forces the viewer to empathize with, and thus, normalize, gay men acting out their sensuality and developing romance."

Batman Wins Big in London

"The annual ceremony at the city's Grosvenor Hotel on Sunday (29 Mar 09) celebrated the film industry's success stories of the year, with Empire magazine readers voting for the winners in all the major categories.

"And Batman movie The Dark Knight continued its award season haul, taking home the Best Movie trophy, as well as gaining a Best Actor prize for its star Christian Bale and the Best Director statuette for filmmaker Christopher Nolan."

Dark Knight Rides Off Into the Sunset

As the Watchmen entered the fray, the biggest superhero exited. Distributor Warner Bros. has hung up the cowl and cape for The Dark Knight after 231 days of service. With a $533.3 million final tally as of Mar. 5, the picture is the top superhero or comic book movie of all time.

The Dark Knight stands as the most attended movie since Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace in 1999, ranking 27th on the All Time Adjusted for Ticket Price Inflation chart. Unadjusted, writer-director Christopher Nolan's Batman sequel is second only to Titanic, and its phenomenal 33-week run includes $49.9 million from IMAX venues, a record for a two-dimensional re-mastered IMAX release. Worldwide, which is domestic and foreign grosses combined, it recently crossed the billion dollar mark, the fourth movie in history to hit that milestone.

Local Welcome Mixed for Gay Christian Music Artist

In 1987, recording artist Ray Boltz came to Abilene to help KGNZ when the station's radio tower was destroyed in a January ice storm.

Boltz, known for such singles as Thank You and I Pledge Allegiance to the Lamb, helped raise $35,000 to repair the tower and returned to Abilene a number of times in the course of a successful career in contemporary Christian music.

But these days, the radio station doesn't play any of his 12 No. 1 Christian radio hits, and many believers, including KGNZ's own station manager Gary Hill, admit they are struggling since Boltz revealed he was gay in the September issue of the Washington Blade, a Washington, D.C.-based gay and lesbian newspaper.

Post of the Day

Posted by dejavu in How the Dave Cullen Forum Has Affected Me

Since we're talking about "How the Dave Cullen Forum Has Affected Me," I think it may be appropriate to mention something else that isn't often thought of. It doesn't specifically concern BBM or our fellow posters, but rather, the host location of this forum on the Dave Cullen web site.

With the publication of Dave's book Columbine, I realize how fortunate we are to be in such close touch with a published author. There is a thread in "Our Community," where Dave has described the process he's gone through recently in bringing the book to its final published form. Even before that thread was initiated, we read here and there, from time to time, what he was going through during the writing stage.

It's been fascinating watching, from here in the shadows, as this project neared completion. And it's very rewarding to have a copy of the final product in my own hands, as I'm reading it right now, knowing that the forum's sponsor is the book's author. Dave, you make us proud!

Dave Cullen signing his book at
Borders bookstore in Boulder, CO.

A Forum Member's Review

LoveEmBoys posted her account over on the The DC Chronicles thread.

"One thing really got me at the [Columbine] signing -- I had not anticipated that Dave would bring his photocopies of Eric and Dylan's journals. These documents obviously play a huge role in the book, and it was incredibly erie to thumb through the pages and pages of hand written notes and drawings. Dave's copies were highlighted and dog eared, so it was easy to flip through and find the many sections that he's quoted or discussed in the book. It gave me chills.

"The story is horrific, heartbreaking, and maddening. The book is seamless, clear, and a comprehensive view never before presented."

False Hope - LGBT Rights in the Middle East

"Execution, public humiliation and imprisonment have long plagued the lives of the LGBT community in the Middle Eastern world. It is a well-known fact that "LGBT individuals are at a constant struggle," notes the Imaan secretariat (an organisation dedicated to the wellbeing of gay Muslims, based in Britain).

'"[They] must [fight] for the right to be LGBT…[and] for the freedom to love somebody of the same sex," he argues further.

"Brian Whitaker, of the Guardian, who authored the book Unspeakable Love, notes that the subject of homosexuality is as unmentionable in the Middle East as it was in the UK 60 years ago.

"This tension can be attributed largely to Islamic conservatism. In 2006, it was reported that radical Islamic militias were attacking homosexuals in Iraq; and it was only a year later that Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claimed that there were "no homosexuals in Iran".

'"Ironically, Ahmadinedjad’s remarks and the laughter from his audience probably did a lot to bring [the issue] out in the open," Whitaker told us. Indeed, soon after, filmmaker Tanaz Eshaghian released a documentary entitled Be Like Others. The film revealed that the government had been paying for homosexual men to have sex-change operations. Arguably, this was the Iranian administration’s humane ultimatum to the death sentence, which is bestowed on any two men who wish to engage in a homosexual relationship."

More Diversity on the White House Lawn

By Marge_Innavera

The White House Easter Egg Roll has been an annual tradition since 1878. In 2006 a group of same-sex couples and their children became the first gay-headed families to attend, leading to accusations that they were "crashing" an event that should be off-limits to them. The White House had expressed no objections, although the families complained that they were shut out of the opening ceremonies and the corresponding media coverage.

This year, President Obama has taken steps to encourage gay-headed families to attend, the White House distributed tickets to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender organizations, with the Family Equality Council, Human Rights Campaign, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force confirming that they had received them. Family Equality organized the first group of gay and lesbian parents who brought their children to the event in 2006. Executive Director Jennifer Chrisler commended Obama for emphasizing to gay-headed families that they would be welcome. Leah McElrath Renna, who attended in both 2006 and 2007 with partner Cathy McElrath Renna and daughter Rosemary, recalled that on those occasions they felt a little like they were "crashing their own party" but the atmosphere was quite different this year.

White House Easter Egg Roll, 2006

The Christian Broadcasting Network website commented that these tickets should not be necessary. "It would be different if there were some force preventing them from attending the event and receiving tickets alongside everybody else, but that's not exactly the situation," wrote Laura Robinson, adding that singling out a particular group was inappropriate if the changes in the process were intended to make it more equitable. CBN did acknowledged that blocks of tickets had also been set aside for military families, families of Administration members and District of Columbia schoolchildren but did not express any opposition to these, acknowledging that the number of tickets issued to LGBT organization was small compared with the 2,000 allotted to DC schools. However, "symbolically, it speaks volumes."

The White House had changed the procedure for getting tickets. Formerly, tickets were issued on the Ellipse at the Washington Mall the weekend before the event, making long waits in line necessary; but this year they were available online for the first time, and each household is limited to six tickets. As before, tickets specifiy a two-hour time frame, making it possible to accommodate many more visitors. This year's events will also feature games, cooking classes, live musical events and storytelling.

Freedom to Marry in Vermont

By Marge_Innavera

The decision in Vermont last week to legalize same-sex marriages, the first in the US enacted by a legislature, was the result of years of patient and persistent work by civil rights organizations in the state, particularly the Vermont Freedom To Marry group. In a statement this week, VFTM commended the people of Vermont for involvement in this issue, "with as much civility and respect as possible given the intensity of the heartfelt views many of us -- across the spectrum -- brought into this debate." Their efforts had included contacting legislators, both in writing and in person at the Statehouse, gathering supporters for petitions and making phone calls. The site provided a complete list of c list of supporters including clergy, businesses, Lawyers For Marriage Equality and parents.

VFTM's website also offers helpful information including a last of frequently-asked questions and answers for couples planning to marry in Vermont, and the full text of the new law.

Visit the Vermont Freedom to Marry website.

Gay Rights Groups Celebrate Victories in Marriage Push

"Gay-rights groups say that momentum from back-to-back victories on same-sex marriage in Vermont and Iowa could spill into other states, particularly since at least nine other legislatures are considering measures this year to allow marriage between gay couples.

"The Vermont Legislature on Tuesday overrode Gov. Jim Douglas’s veto of a bill allowing gay couples to marry, mustering one more vote than needed to preserve the measure.

"The step makes Vermont the first state to allow same-sex marriage through legislative action instead of a court ruling, and comes less than a week after the Iowa Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriages in that state.

"New York, New Jersey, Maine and New Hampshire are among the states where such proposals have gained legislative support in recent months.
"This is a reminder to those legislatures that they should finish the job," said Evan Wolfson, executive director of Freedom to Marry, a national advocacy group based in New York. "Contrary to the claims made by the opponents of equality, it’s not just judges, it’s not just the coasts, and it’s not just going away."

Of course, this will galvanize some of the opposition. "“It’s a bad day for the country,” said Brian Brown, executive director of the National Organization for Marriage, a group established to fight same-sex marriage. "There is a palpable sense that something has changed and people need to get active."'

Fun Question of the Week

This week’s Question: What car sold more than one million units in Northern America in 1965, setting a record for the sale of a single year model, that still stands today?

Let us know the answer on the response thread.

Last question and answer: Who are these people? Leonard, Minnie, Herbert, Simon, Arthur, Milton, Manfred, and Julius

Congratulations to Ennis Del Mark for knowing that these folks are all members of the Marx family—Leonard is Chico's real name, Minnie - their mother, Herbert is Zeppo's real name, Simon was their father (called Sam), Arthur was Harpo, Milton - Gummo, Manfred was the firstborn Marx son, who died when he was a toddler, and last but not least, Julius, who was none other than Groucho!
