ANOTHER YEAR

jack was stumped
when ennis dumped
on him that afternoon.
ennis reacted like a bear,
lumbering away, low growl.
all he said was bring em down
as the tent they shared was untied
and bundled up and hidden moments
they shared were folded in, origami-like,
every kiss and moan crushed and tucked
and the air pressed out and stepped on,
ropes that held their space taut, and
the four poles to raise it up now
stacked for the fall downhill.
jack tried to brighten the
mood by saying the
moon that night
would be a
crescent
smile

the next year, two other boys
not quite the age of twenty, too,
rode up brokeback along the same
trails with strict instructions to stay in
the same camp as the forest service was
aware of dealings in the previous years. so
it wasn't such a big deal when that first night
the bigger of the pair told the smaller dude that
he'd be sleeping closest to the front, where ennis
used to snooze. he'd lie there on mornings with one
arm out to check the weather, to feel for the sunshine
as his other hand stayed inside, wrapped like vines with
his lover's wrists, regretting the day and the morning ride.

The day is bad
I want to cry
ya see, my man
he said "good-bye"

he gave me love
he soothed my fears
and now he's gone
and left me tears

the love he gave
was the strongest I've had
and now I'm alone
and feeling sad

The day is bad
I want to cry
ya see, my man
he said "good-bye"

Awww geeee!

Thanks Kim.....but I don't "need" the hug.   I haven't been dumped.  Wink

I was on BetterMost and they have a thread called "A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words".  The object is that someone posts a pic, and the next person puts up a text response to the pic.  They then post their own pic for someone else to respond to.

Someone posted a pic of a cowboy with his head bent down, you couldn't see his face, just the brim and top of his head.  I imagined a cowboy trying to hide his tears, and the poem was born.

Nice poem, Chuck.  And thanks for explaining.

Ineresting way to create poems, being inspired by a picture, in a sort of "round robin."

Well Chuck, you already know what I think of your poem.

This is just to confirm that I still do.

(For Ennis),  (Jack too):   Sad

When true hearts are withered
And loved ones are flown;
Oh, who would inhabit
This bleak world alone?

Oh, who would inhabit
This bleak world alone?

Yes, gnash, I think so too.  It's such a sad  Cry  but  lovely verse.

p.s.   Perhaps I should have written "For Heath", (Jake too), as well as "For Ennis", (Jack too).
Sometimes I can't help feeling this way!
