linda, i like the last one best, too.

it's weird, and nice, how jack and ennis translate into our own lives, somehow.  Smiley

Wow, jimmy. So lovely, all of them. And thanks to fofol whose post in TOTW sent me over here in the first place! Do you know, I had never seen Dennis's snowflake poem from four years ago until now, either, but that was where the thread took me when I opened it up. That was wonderful, too.

Intensity

I look up and feel shocked
Taken aback by you
And the intensity
That plays across your face

Your eyes stare through me
And turn vivid blue
Matching the shirt
That you currently wear

Your brow is furrowed
And your mouth an even line
Where calm usually resides
Tension now reigns.

This isn’t the man
That I’ve come to know
This is some sort of mask
And it’s my job to remove it.

I slowly approach you
Place my fingers on your chin
And let my thumb
Trace circles on your scruff

Then I slowly lean in
And place kisses on your neck
The spell is now broken
And your smile has returned

Needy

I’ve never met someone
As needy as you
You can handle most tasks
But others throw you
So things pile up
Until you delegate
Too much done at once
A situation I hate
You truly believe
You can’t do this yourself?
If that’s really the case
Then perhaps you’re beyond help
How have you managed
To get yourself this far?
You can’t do it yourself
Yet think you’re the star
So you walk on through life
Remember tasks that you’ve braved
But the reality is
You’re on paths someone else paved
So you simply strolled
Across even ground
And the ones that have helped you
are no longer around
And as you move forward
I take it in stride
‘cause I’m sure at the end
You’ll feel empty inside.

It's ok to post comments here, isn't it? I was holding back, but then realised this wasn't the Slash Poetry thread. And I do like to say if something's impressed me.

ennis del help me

you brushed crumbs off yer chest today, they tumbled into yer lap,
where i saw them lay for the longest time in the folds of denim below your belt,
above your knees, which were so far apart you looked like an acrobat.
do you do your gymnastics for me? the cornbread was so good. i was tempted to
crawl over there on hands and knees, to bury my head in your crotch
for a while, to inhale the buttery scents of what i know to be, something both of us
have, our male sexuality. then i realized that i am ennis del mar, and
that i had crumbs on my crotch too, under my simple buckle of tarnished brass, and
the leather belt so soft and worn (it used to be worn by my daddy).
one day, maybe when we stand together in our kitchen, i will ask you what the secret
ingredient happens to be in your cornbread recipe. maybe we can
live in a log cabin or something. i don't know how you do it, jack twist. make everything so
tasty. i don't know how you do the things you seem to be doing to me.
if i close my eyes, will you take my hand? i promise i won't flinch or anything. a log just snapped
in half. the fire keeps burning. you'll throw another log on the fire, i'll
have to get up to them sheep. damn the sheep. i'm too full to ride up, even though the horse gets me
there safely. damn those sheep. even though i'm so full, i'm still very
hungry. your blue eyes are looking at me. not at my eyes, though. i see you starin, cowboy. you see the
crumbs on my lap, don't you, buddy? i'm closing my eyes now. here's
your chance, cowboy. do what i want, do what i'm afraid to tell you, do what i desire, please do what i need.

gnash.....your name used to scare me .... but I have discovered you have a soft heart and a deep soul. You don't fool me no more. Love the verse you have written here.

i couldn't find the damn snowflake poem, but i did find this one, which i forgot about as well. it still works, four years and a month later.  Cry

SOMEWHERE, 1976

when
he was
seventeen
bobby found
a set of old pics
inside a blue parka
one cold february day
inscribed on the back of
the faded, yet untouched
pics were notes to his friend
scrawled in blue ball point pen
"bi-centennial celebration, 1976"
he wrote on one -- as if he'd meant to
send it -- "after you nearly wore me out"
most of the photos were luridly explicit, yet
the aching in his heart was greater than bobby
anticipated. finally, each of the unsaid notions about
his father were now confirmed, as the yellowing images
before him showed jack in a happier light than he had
ever seen. because of this, bobby was able to smile,
both his hands shaking as he wiped away tears.
bobby placed the pictures back in the pocket
and the blue parka fit him fine, goose down
a little bit of wear around the edges still
smelling of smoke from years of use
lureen she never saw the photos
but bobby, out of curiosity
found an address in his
daddy's old rolodex
and when ennis
opened the
letter he
cried

dear ennis,

the letter said

my name is bobby,
and i am jack twist's son.
i think my dad would want
you to have these. i would like
to meet you one day, to talk about
my father, and find out who you are.
i miss my father very much, and he
told me only a little about you.
i hope you are doing okay.
mother and i are fine.

bobby twist

ps: the parka that my daddy
wore, i wear it all the time.

bobby mailed off the entire set
except for a smiling photo of ennis
wearing clothes. it was not missed by
ennis, who wondered as soon as his eyes
were dry what bobby did with the negatives.
there was another picture with all the rest and
it showed jack with his arms around a young boy

this is me

he wrote on the back

a few years before dad died.

frozen

jack balanced the snow cone on his knee,
rolled two cigarettes deftly, lit them both
and offered one to ennis, who took it
from him begrudgingly. after ennis
tossed away his butt, he dared
to look at jack, who was now
gazing toward the sunset
and smiling. ennis took
this opportunity and
snatched the cone
sweetened with pure
maple syrup and started
eating -- it was as good as
anything jack had ever made.
and so it turned out that what he
hated so much was now something
that was devoured, craved, and loved,
frozen crystals melting slow on his tongue.
why did the summer suddenly grow so cold?
