I was glad to find it.  I had missed the first few minutes of the show when I saved it on my DVR.

Huh. The San Francisco public library has 79 holds on 10 copies. They've ordered 30-something more copies. But it looks as if the SF system is behind the times.

For those interested in viewing the CSPAN show, it's here:

http://www.booktv.org/watch.aspx?ProgramId=HI-10513

Thanks, Michael.  I really appreciate this, because I missed it on TV again last night.  I'd seen part of it before, but not the whole thing.

Glad to help, Deb.  It'll be a useful interview for the book club.

Hi All, Just to add a few words on the topic of libraries...FIRST, PLEASE REQUEST THE BOOK FROM YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY SYSTEM. Even if they do not have it on order,  you can often fill out a "Request for Purchase" so the collections folks will consider it -- especially since the request comes from a patron. (You DO patronize your libraries, don't you?)

As for the delays that sometimes occur: libraries purchase books differently from retail customers or even most stores. They can't simply log on to amazon.com and get a copy overnight. Each institution buys from jobbers who handle library accounts. And don't forget -- somebody has to put on those nifty little jackets that protect the books. And catalog the books into the system...and put on the scannable inventory stickers...and shelve the books...

On another note, public libraries depend on local tax revenue and municipal appropriations for funding. Most are cutting back as a result, some drastically.  So please support your local public libraries -- the more you utilize them, the more they can help you by remaining responsive and relevant!

as a former bookseller (and purchaser), i came to take a dim view of the NYT list as it was skewed towards pre pub purchases by big chains, therefore not relevant to what actual book stores were moving.

jack, how long ago was that? the times has radically overhauled their process the past few years. it now mostly reflects actual sales, via bookscan which captures (70-80?)% of actual retail sales.
my bad.  the books were on paper rather than parchment, but it was a while ago, pre 1980.

i stand corrected.

i'm all for people requesting it from libraries. (request it from ANYwhere, just request it! lol.)

btw, the book may be wrapping up its run on the NY Times bestseller list. next week it will fall to #12, and the list goes to 15.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/07/books/bestseller/besthardnonfiction.html

it's in its 7th wee on the list, though, which is kind of amazing. (that's the sixth, longest of the 15 currently on the list.) that's a pretty good run.

it will continue to sell after that, of course, and i'm doing lots of web-based stuff to support it now.

Aw, I just came here all excited about several things and saw those nice messages. Thanks, guys.

But welcome to middle age? I figured I hit that around 40--if I'm lucky. My dental hygienist told me yesterday that she was turning 50, and "as you approach middle age . . ." I restrained myself from saying, "Middle? Exactly how far past 100 are you expecting to live?" Hahaha.

(p.s. all the hardware she had in my mouth may have also restrained me. And I've learned a few things in life. Don't piss off someone digging around in your mouth with sharp metal objects would be one. hahaha.

So it's been a great day for America, everybody, or at least Americans just like me.

First, I was watching The Daily Show and discovered that America has apparently fallen out of love with the automobile and desexualized it:

http://open.salon.com/blog/dave_cullen/2009/06/03/did_i_outlive_the_car-culture_romance

I have never gotten the car as surrogate penis, and was pleased enough to blog about it. (Link above.)

Then . . .

I'd forgotten it was "List Day"--Wednesday's about 5:30 p.m. EDT, the NY Times announces the bestseller list rankings to publishers. I'd probably forgotten because I feared I would likely fall off this coming week. (Last update, I'd fallen from #8 to 12. It goes to 15.)

But I just got a surprise email that I'm still on, clutching desperately to the lower rungs of the list. hahaha. I'm at #13 next week. It goes to 15. I'll take it.

And I went to gmail to tell my fambly, and found a brand new email announcing that homos just got the right to marry in New Hampshire. Nice.

Now I can marry a New Englander, should I ever find a husband. Such a day.

Another fan of Dave's work in the window of 'Aardvark Books' in San Francisco:
