Congratulations to the brave campaigners on such an important step forward!

Here's hoping for a quick final resolution of the process and implementation.

As for unit cohesion of US troops currently fighting wars, there have been no known problems in allied countries' military forces which include openly gay soldiers fighting in the same wars. Are the fears based on the penetration of the US military by evangelical Christianists?

Obama to Sign ‘Don’t Ask’ Bill on Wednesday
By Sheryl Gay Stolberg
December 20, 2010

President Obama will sign the repeal of the military’s ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy into law Wednesday morning, and may hold a news conference his press secretary, Robert Gibbs, said on Monday.

But surely only if that is the risk they take with their choice of career, just the same as anyone else? No one is making them enlist for the service, at least at the moment.

^^^

yes, that's the point, as long as we have a volunteer army.

I think it was a running joke during the draft that saying you were gay was no sure way to get out of the military.  Otherwise a lot fewer people would have gone to Canada.

There was a "gay" character on *MASH*, I can't think of his name.  That was due to the draft.

Now, what would be really revolutionary, would be to see Senator's sons and daughters clamoring for the right to fight in the military!

Does this surprise anyone? NOt me they been trying to rewrite history for years. But I'm glad I see people trying to fight it.

Two civil rights organizations are seeking a federal review of public school education in Texas, accusing state school administrators of violating federal civil rights laws after curriculum changes approved earlier this year by the Texas Board of Education.

The request to the U.S. Department of Education made by the Texas NAACP and Texas League of United Latin American Citizens on Monday contended that the curriculum changes passed in May "were made with the intention to discriminate" and would have a "stigmatizing impact" on African-American and Latino students.

"The State of Texas is failing to provide many of its minority students with equal educational opportunities," documents sent to the federal department said.

The request, signed by Gary Bledsoe, president of the state NAACP, and Joey D. Cardenas Jr., state director of Texas LULAC, asked that implementation of the curriculum changes and new standardized tests be stopped for being racially or ethnically offensive or historically inaccurate.

I think you're thinking of Cpl Klinger.  He wasn't "gay", but would dress as a woman instead of wearing his army uniform, in an effort to be seen as "insane" and get a Section 8 discharge.
