New Forum Thread: “Topic of the Week”

A new thread is set for launch in The Film & Book forum: “Topic of the Week”. Forum moderator CellarDwellar115 explains, “This thread is the start of a new feature here, to help stimulate conversation on Brokeback Mountain.”

Beginning on 7 September, a new thread will be opened each Sunday for discussion of a specific topic in the original short story or film, or both. After a week, the thread will be closed and moved to the Archive area. A new thread, with a new topic, will be started the following week.

Are you eager to talk about a character’s personality or work out the meaning of a prop? Want to dive into discussion of symbolism or the timeline? Whether you’re a newly-arrived member who’s only recently seen the film or read the short story or you’ve been around since the forum began—this thread needs your thoughts, ideas and input.

The “Topic of The Week” is based on an idea that was first used on the BetterMost forum.

If you have any questions that you feel would be a great topic for a future thread, please feel free to send the question through a PM to TellYouWhat, Nax, or CellarDweller115.

Welcome MissYouSoMuch ~ Our New Editor

It is with great pleasure and appreciation that we welcome MissYouSoMuch as the new TDS editor. Her willingness to serve in this capacity allows our forum to continue to have a common place among the individual threads for us to share news and happening, those specific to The Ultimate Brokeback Forum and those throughout our world. We are delighted to have you on the TDS team!

Stephanie Tubbs Jones Was a Friend to The Community

“‘Count on me,’ Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones told the Cleveland Human Rights Campaign dinner in May 2003. ‘I promise that neither your voice nor mine will be silenced, because we’re going to take this to the Capitol, to the White House, and to the streets.’

“But Tubbs Jones’ distinctive voice was suddenly silenced August 20 when she died about 24 hours after suffering an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage while driving in Cleveland Heights. She was 58.
...
“Tubbs Jones attended Cleveland Pride celebrations and helped raise money for the Cleveland Stonewall Democrats.
...
“Longtime friend and former Cleveland Stonewall Democrats president Patrick Shepherd recalled, ‘Stephanie was scheduled to headline at a Cleveland Pride but she arrived a little late.’

‘Musical performances had already begun on the main stage by that time,’ Shepherd said. ‘I offered to make a request to give her some microphone time at the next intermission. She responded by saying, “No, baby, no.” She always called me “baby,” like she did with many people. “I’m just here to see my friends in the gay community.”‘”

Magnifique...and Children

“Anne Hathaway has come a long way from her Princess Diaries days, shedding the girlish image that has stuck with her for some time after the well-received Disney family [comedies].

“Since then, she has tackled more serious roles, including that of Lureen Twist, wife of Jake Gyllenhaal’s Jack Twist in Brokeback Mountain.

“Hathaway added another feather to her cap by becoming the face of Lancome’s new fragrance, Magnifique.”

You can read more about Anne’s charity work and how she uses perfume to prepare for her roles here.

The Many Peaks of Mountains in Literature

“Geology’s most awesome features continue to stir the imagination to great heights.

“There is a wealth of literature about or inspired by mountains and it’s easy to see why. One only has to think of a mountain and the powerful adjectives tumble from your fingertips: solitary, ancient, vast, God-like. And just as rivers often represent the flow of life, so too the mountain is a handy metaphor - for the insignificance of man perhaps, or perhaps as a reminder that ours is a planet built on nature’s awesome violence.

“The role of mountains in literature is multifarious. They can be symbolic or metaphorical, or they can simply provide a dramatic setting. They can be friend[;] or, in the case of Sherlock Holmes who met his death at the Reichenbach Falls in the Swiss Alps, they can be [a deadly foe]. Consider the sense of imprisonment that the Carpathians created in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the escape route that the high plateau of Tibet provided in Heinrich Harrer’s Seven Years In Tibet, or the place of solace offered by Wyoming’s fictional Brokeback Mountain in Annie Proulx’s short story of the same name.”

Majority of Fortune 500 Companies Provide Sexual-Orientation Anti-Discrimination Policies

“Major corporations are increasingly saying that discrimination based on sexual orientation will not be tolerated in the workplace.

“According to a new report out from LGBT civil rights organization Equality Forum, 471 (94.2%) of the 2008 list of Fortune 500 companies voluntarily include sexual orientation in their employment nondiscrimination policies.

“The latest results suggest a marked increase in the number of companies embracing sexual orientation nondiscrimination policies since Equality Forum began contacting Fortune 500 companies five years ago.

“Changing corporate attitudes appear to be mirroring those of the general public according to Gallup’s May 2008 Values and Beliefs Poll, which found that 89 percent of U.S. citizens believe gays and lesbians should have equal rights in job opportunities.”

Have a Hankering for Interior Decorating?

There’s a new thread a-going for discussion about interior decorating. Forum member Miaisland writes: “So I’ll start with the room I am most pleased with in the house. A room worth waiting for contractors to finish last winter. The first beams of light outside windows in master bathroom.”

Post of the Day

Join the discussion in the Character Analysis of Jack Twist thread, where CANSTANDIT asks this about Jack:

“I’m still considering his perceived ‘role’ in the relationship. We all have [a role]; there is always one partner more dominant than the other. That’s life. If both parties were truly equal, in sharing relationship tasks, more or less, things would not move forward, and as humans, we need a degree of positive conflict to move forward. A slight imbalance provokes the impetus to evolve, to an extent, as we seek just that balance...

“How does this get negotiated by Jack, this balance? how is it that he manages to get Ennis to do some things for him, but not others? What tells us why some things work and others don’t? I mean, Jack gets him to leave his wife for a few days, with the drop of a hat...yet he cannot admit certain things to Jack, even in private. Hmmm?”

Fun Question of the Week

This week’s Question: What are hurricanes called when they occur in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, west of an imaginary line called the International Date Line?

Let us know the answer on the response thread.

Last Week: In the 1956 closing Olympic ceremonies, it was the first time athletes entered the stadium in this fashion - how did they enter?

The answer: In the 1956 Closing Ceremonies, for the first time, athletes from all nations enter the stadium in unity, rather than marching in by nation. topendsports.com

Forum Flashback

The third anniversary of the Ultimate Brokeback Forum is fast approaching. Let’s take the Wayback Machine to January 2006, when afterelton.com published an article about Dave Cullen’s Brokeback Maniacs.

“You know you’re a fan of Brokeback Mountain when you’ve seen the movie, loved it, and talked about it with your friends.

“But if you’ve seen the movie multiple times, check the movie’s box office take every day, and have read virtually every article about it you’re something else altogether: you’re a ‘Brokeaholic.’

“Don’t worry—you’re not alone. In fact, there is a whole online community of obsessed Brokeback Mountain fans waiting for you over at Dave Cullen’s Ultimate Brokeback website. They’re the ones who coined the term Brokeaholic. And it is they who haunt the discussion boards at Dave’s site where you can find [threads] devoted to every—and I mean every!—detail about the movie.

“‘Even I don’t know every [thread],’ says Dave. ‘And some are discussing something about the movie I’ve already thought about and just can’t obsess over anymore!’”

Suit Against Gay Marriage Recognition in NY Tossed

A New York judge has dismissed a case that challenged the governor’s move to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.
“‘A decision by gay couples to wed represents ‘a personal expression of emotional devotion, support and interdependence and a public commitment,’ state Supreme Court Judge Lucy Billings wrote in a decision issued Tuesday. ‘With that validity, they expect equal treatment with other married couples.’

“Lambda Legal, a gay rights group that entered the case on behalf of two female state employees who married in Canada, said the judge’s decision amplified ‘a steady drumbeat of courts recognizing long-standing New York law as it applies to same-sex couples.’”

Lesbian & Gay Archive in Australia

“[A] ‘bond of steel’ has welded Mac Ronan and Geoff Allingham to each other for the past 60 years and, even though he shudders at the cliché, it is the best way 82-year-old Mac can think to describe his lifelong relationship with Geoff, 81.

“It is a bond that emerged almost as soon as they met, outside Melbourne’s Princess Theatre in 1948, but was properly forged in 1953 when they were two young lovers on a year-long global adventure.

“Last night the couple were honoured at a dinner celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives, a volunteer-run organisation that has painstakingly collected and maintained documents and memorabilia from Australia’s queer community history over three decades.

“Included in the archives are a book of handwritten 1920s love poems, photos from camp 1940s parties, protest banners from the 1970s, posters, books and rare editions of early 1970s gay and lesbian magazines.

“There are tens of thousands of items charting those social changes in the archive.

“The organisation receives no government or private funding and estimates it would need a space at least three times its present size to store all the archival material.

“It is hoping to find a benefactor this year.”

Was a Would-Be Saint Gay?

“The long-running battle between gay rights activists and the Vatican has moved into the realm of the dead. With 19th century Anglican convert Cardinal John Henry Newman, arguably the greatest Catholic thinker from the English-speaking world, moving ever closer to sainthood, trouble is brewing over where his final resting place should be. The London-born historian and theologian died in 1890 and, following the instructions in his will, was buried beside his lifelong friend and fellow convert Ambrose St. John, who had died 15 years earlier. Newman’s deep expressions of grief after St. John’s death, along with other writings, have led some historians to ask whether the two men, who lived together for many years, lived much like common-law spouses.

“The Vatican announced plans this month to move Newman’s remains from a small gravesite in the central English town of Rednal to a specially built sarcophagus in the Oratory Church of Birmingham, where, officials say, they will be more accessible for venerating faithful.

“But British gay rights activist Peter Tatchell sees ulterior motives in exhuming the Cardinal: ‘embarrassment’ because of his relationship with St. John. ‘They were inseparable, they lived together for half a century, effectively like husband and wife,’ says Tatchell.”

Have You Received your Copy of Adam’s Book?

Last April, Adam Sutton, Aussie’s authentic gay cowboy and a friend of Heath’s, completed the Great Walk in China to support the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Center. He and his writing partner agreed to give those donating $50 or more an autographed copy of his book, Say It Out Loud. For $100 or more, he offered to include a t-shirt, cap, and autographed print.

Forum members who made generous donations should go back and find your receipts for your donation. Adam and Neil have obviously been delayed in fulfilling their promise to Forum members, and having your receipt available will facilitate the resolution. When you find your receipt, please let KittyHawk know via PM.

The Real Numbers on H.I.V.

“It has been difficult over the years to get a good statistical handle on the size of the AIDS problem in this country. But by the latest and most sophisticated measurements, the disease continues to frustrate federal and local efforts to rein it in.

“A recent report from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that the number of people newly infected each year with H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS, is 40 percent higher than previously estimated. The report, based on new technology that allows more precise estimates, found that 56,300 people around the country became newly infected in 2006, well above the 40,000 cited in recent years.

“Greater efforts to control the virus by all levels of government are obviously required. There is an urgent need to focus even more on black and Hispanic communities, which are disproportionately infected, and on gay and bisexual men, who are increasingly becoming less cautious.”

GOP Political Pundits Caught Dissing Gov. Sarah Palin on Tape

“Today Wall Street Journal columnist and former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan and former John McCain adviser and MSNBC contributor Mike Murphy were unwittingly caught on tape expressing their true feelings about Gov. Sarah Palin and they were anything but positive.

“Chuck Todd [political commentator]: ‘Yeah, I mean is she really the most qualified woman they could have turned to?’
“Peggy Noonan: ‘The most qualified? No! I think they went for this—excuse me—political bullshit about narratives.’”
Mike Murphy: “You know what’s really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is no cynicism, and this is cynical.”

Response from Dave Cullen: “It’s outrageous that McCain picked her, and that the Rs then had the nerve to go on the air lying through their teeth, and the spineless media went right along. When you hear what they are really thinking, and saying, and the R operatives saying it too, and then the Chuck Todds of the world lie to their viewers about what they think in some perverse attempt to be ‘fair.’ It’s fair to lie? When you know the team you’re lying for is lying too--because they tell you the truth openly during the commercials?”

Concerns Beyond Just Where the Wild Things Are

“Maurice Sendak’s 80th year — which ended with his birthday earlier this summer and is being celebrated on Monday night with a benefit at the 92nd Street Y — was a tough one. He has been gripped by grief since the death of his longtime partner; a recent triple-bypass has temporarily left him too weak to work or take long walks with his dog; and he is plagued by Norman Rockwell.

“Or, to be more accurate, he is plagued by the question that has repeatedly been asked about Norman Rockwell: was he a great artist or a mere illustrator?

“‘Mere illustrator,’ he said, repeating the phrase with contempt. It’s not that Mr. Sendak, who has illustrated more than 100 books, including many he wrote, is angry that people question Rockwell’s talent; rather, he fears he has not risen above the ‘mere illustrator’ label himself.

“Never mind that Mr. Sendak’s originality and emotional honesty have changed the shape of children’s literature; that his work is featured in museums; that he has designed costumes and sets for operas, ballets and theater; that he has won a chest full of awards and prizes including a National Medal of the Arts.

“He lived with Eugene Glynn, a psychoanalyst, for 50 years before Dr. Glynn’s death in May 2007. He never told his parents: ‘All I wanted was to be straight so my parents could be happy. They never, never, never knew.’

“A gay artist in New York is not exactly uncommon, but Mr. Sendak said that the idea of a gay man writing children books would have hurt his career when he was in his 20s and 30s.”

Fun Question of the Week

This week’s Question: What is believed to be the cause of the sinking of the USS Thresher, the nuclear powered submarine—mentioned in Brokeback Mountain (short story)—on April 10th, 1963 off the coast of Massachusetts?

Let us know the answer on the response thread.

Last week’s Question: What are hurricanes called when they occur in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, west of an imaginary line called the International Date Line?

The answer: Kudos to Ministering angel for her correct answer, and our thanks to BrianR for coming out of retirement to help with our question - around the Indian Ocean and Southwestern Pacific Ocean (near Africa and Australia) these storms are referred to as cyclones and those storms that generate in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean (near Asia) are called typhoons, explains wisegeek.com.

For more discussion join us in the forum’s Weather phenomena thread.

Post of the Day

In our new Topic of the Week thread, Ministering angel posts:

“In the film, Ennis is clearly struggling with his feelings while on the mountain. His shame, while not articulated, is displayed convincingly by Heath, who described Ennis as a man who was “disgusted by the way he loved.” When Jack ostensibly asks Aguirre for work and is turned down personally (“I got no work for you”), he then asks the real question, “Ennis del Mar ain’t been around?” and gets Aguirre’s full disgust. While his ego may be a little bruised by the reply to the first question, there’s an element of uncertainty to it, but the last remarks of Aguirre leave him in no doubt.

“To me, Jack seems to be ashamed and maybe just a little scared too, so when he talks to Ennis in the motel he avoids the parts that caused him to feel ashamed, since Ennis’s behaviour has already indicated that he is ashamed of what’s going on. Also, the part about “maybe someone” seeing them at it is left out too, so there’s no real lead-in to the rest of Jack’s tale. Film Ennis would, I suspect, be utterly horrified to think they had been spotted having sex. His dawning awareness comes after the first night, and so the second night is his conflicted capitulation to the situation. He spends most of the film being paranoid and queasy - I suspect if Jack had given him the full story he might well have had a much harder time continuing.”

Come join the discussion and tell us your thoughts, and look for the new Topic of the Week question to be posted Sunday!

Simply the Best

afterelton.com polled its readers on the 50 best gay movies of all times. Can you guess which was number one—by a two-to-one margin?

“Plenty of heterosexuals have had the experience of hiding a love affair, but how many of them know what it’s like to be forced by society to deny themselves the very possibility of love? This is the daring and fundamentally ‘gay’ question at the heart of Ang Lee’s 2005 masterpiece: can two men simply allow themselves to love each other? And though the movie is set in the past, it is, ultimately, the very choice that every gay man still must make.

“Jake Gyllenhaal is flawless as Jack Twist in arguably the movie’s most difficult role. But Heath Ledger’s heartbreaking portrayal of Ennis Del Mar, a walking cautionary tale of homophobia’s logical end result, is a revelation — a total acting transformation. … But the indignities and injustices that Jack and Ennis faced did not end at [the] closing credits. Upon the film’s release, the movie’s makers and fans were subjected to a six-month orgy of tasteless jokes from clueless comedians and bile-filed commentary from right-wing pundits. All of this negativity culminated when the movie, long considered the Oscar front-runner, lost Best Picture to a fine but unremarkable movie called Crash, perhaps the most egregious upset in Oscar history and almost certainly the result of lingering homophobia in Hollywood’s old guard.

“But that fusillade of ridicule and outrage is already fading into the gloom of a bigoted past while the movie’s artistry and quiet power shines brighter than ever. Let’s face it: this isn’t just the greatest gay movie of all time, it’s one of the greatest movies ever.”

Like a Bell of Freedom

The Los Angeles Times reports that “[t]he state’s six highest bishops go on the record against Prop. 8, the fall ballot measure that would reverse the California Supreme Court’s decision to allow same-sex couples to marry.

“California’s six most senior Episcopal bishops Wednesday unanimously declared their opposition to a constitutional amendment on the statewide November ballot that would ban same-sex marriage.

“The bishops argued that preserving the right of gays and lesbians to marry would enhance the ‘Christian values’ of monogamy, love and commitment.”

Episcopal Life Online adds that “[t]he bishops acknowledged that the Church is not of one mind on the blessing of same-sex unions, but said they are ‘adamant that justice demands that same-sex civil marriage continue in our state,’ and noted that a resolution passed at the 2006 General Convention opposed any civil initiative that would make same-sex marriage unconstitutional on a state or national level.

“At a press conference on September 10, Bishop Marc Handley Andrus and Bishop Steven Charleston, both of the Diocese of California, and Bishop Barry L. Beisner of the Diocese of Northern California stood together on the steps of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco to show their support for same-sex marriage and denounce Proposition 8.

“Beisner stated that it was a matter of ‘fundamental fairness to allow all couples to have [access] to civil marriage in the state of California.’ Charleston said that to him, as a person of color, the equality recognized by the California Supreme Court ‘resonates deeply like a bell of freedom.’ Andrus said, ‘Living like Jesus means standing in solidarity with the marginalized of our world. For me, voting no on Proposition 8 is a way I can stand in solidarity with the marginalized, in this case with LGBT brothers and sisters, and continue my journey with Christ.’”

Wedding Bells Ringing for Forum Members

Two forum members, Peter and David, are getting married in California on 30 September in San Francisco’s City Hall, with none other than Mayor Gavin Newsom officiating!

In lieu of gifts, Peter and David have requested that people make a gift donation to the No on Prop. 8 Campaign at the Equality California Web site.

It was love at first sight 30 years ago when they met at a bisexual potluck in Sunnyvale. They moved in together about a year later, and have been inseparable ever since. They celebrated their life-partnership commitment with a ceremony in a redwood grove in 1990—and fourteen years later, Peter asked David to marry him.

Musical Taste Defines Personality

Are you a heavy metal lover? Do you get jazzed up about the blues?

Professor Adrian North of Scotland’s Heriot-Watt University has conducted a study of musical tastes and reports that “[p]eople often define their sense of identity through their musical taste, wearing particular clothes, going to certain pubs, and using certain types of slang.”

According to the article in Reuters Life!, “fans of classical music and jazz are creative, pop lovers are hardworking and, despite the stereotypes, heavy metal listeners are gentle, creative types who are at ease with themselves.”

Must-See TV: Project Runway

Dave says: “If you’re not watching Project Runway, you’re missing one of the best shows on TV. They rushed this season, so the designers are not up to previous standards, but it’s still amazing to watch their process, and loads of laughs. Discussing it on the PR thread is even better.”

If you haven’t read Tonkatodd’s weekly debriefs, you’re missing the best part of Dave’s week. Here’s a sample from last week:

“[Blayne] made a baggy, flesh colored 19th century ladies undergarment with unexplainable explosions of fabric lashed to it. To me that was more of an homage to the semiconductor in France hurdling protons at one another (and their residual effects) than ANYTHING to do with Libra Zodiac sign...

“KENLEY! AHHHH! Shut up, shut up, shut up already! Her voice is worse than a honking goose in your ear and she sent an atrocious, “Alice in Wonderland” get up down the runway. Another “legend in their own mind” that does not listen when people speak...I imagine there is some sort of screeching noise in her head that she tries to interpret in to hideous runway outfits.

“Korto...nice but underwhelming. It was water. Next. . . . I loved her quote, ‘I am not going to finish so I preplanned my stress.’ Now that is efficient.”

Another installment will be up next Wednesday. Each show is repeated several times during the week, and there are also regular marathons to catch you up. “And,” Dave adds, “count on Tonkatodd and other brilliant forum posters to have their critiques up Wednesday night or Thursday morning.”

Forum Member Participates in NPR Roundtable

On 9 September, Forum member alma participated in a roundtable on National Public Radio’s “News and Notes” talking about the Mommy Wars and Sarah Palin, addressing specifically the issues surrounding her.

alma says: “Palin is for rightwing moms what Obama is for African Americans, what Hillary was for feminists. This is the first time they feel they ‘show up’ - have become visible - on the national stage. That’s why they are over-the-moon and it appears irrational. It’s not so much irrationality as it is identification. They feel vindicated that they are not dumb, not irrelevant, not un-cool.”

A Princely Setting

Recently, Web site Wet, Dark & Wild posted photos of the Morocco set for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

The film, set for release in 2010, is the story of an adventurous prince (Jake Gyllenhaal) who teams up with a rival princess (Gemma Arterton) to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world.

Here is one of the early “concept art” images:

And this photo shows the actual set, under construction earlier this summer:

Filming is scheduled to move to London in a few weeks. You can see more images of the Prince of Persia set here.

“I turned on the TV to find something called the PBR.  It is Professional Bull Riding and it was actually kind of interesting.  Part of the show was about this one bull and interestingly enough the bull was treated as much like an athlete as the bull riders.  As part of the bull riding season there is a vote for the Bull of the Year and the featured bull who won this honor 3 times in a row because he was such a “smart” bull for being able to buck everyone off (yes, they referred to him as a “smart” bull).  The thing I found amusing is the name of this bad ass bull, Little Yellow Jacket.  The other thing that is funny about this bull is after he bucks the rider off he always stopped to look at the audience before he turns and quietly wanders back to the shoot thing.  Little Yellow Jacket was inducted into the Bull Riders Hall of Fame.  He is retired now and spends his day being a stud.”

Quote of the Day

The price of the democratic way of life is a growing appreciation of people’s differences, not merely as tolerable,
but as the essence of a rich and rewarding human experience.
