The Lower House of the Tasmanian Parliament voted for same-sex marriage this evening.

The Bill will go to the Legislative Council and will reportedly be debated late next month. The members haven't given any indication of their attitudes.

It was infuriating to read the comments of a Liberal Party Senator in the second reading debate on a same-sex marriage bill in the Australian Senate last month,

“Those views [opposing same-sex marriage reform] reflect the entire understanding and the entire course of human history of what a marriage is...”

Was he lying or just ignorant? He also attacked Senator Sarah Hanson-Young who is proposing the bill for her “impertinence”!

I wanted to rebut his claim that the entire understanding and the entire course of human history of marriage is that it is exclusively between a man and a woman, so I went looking for single authoritative resource that I could refer him to and found online

'A History of Same-Sex Marriage' by William N Eskridge, Jnr in Virginia Law Review Vol 79 (7) October 1993. The author was a professor of law at Georgetown and New York Universities at the time.

Eskridge cites studies of evidence of various forms of same-sex marriage going back millennia and from many societies in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, Australia and Oceania. I knew a great many of them but this article is great because it brings them all together.

The other day, I came across Gay Star News which I've found to have the broadest global coverage I've yet to see online or in print. One of the treasures I found there in a link from a news item is a substantial report published in the UK in July by two writers from Policy Exchange which calls itself an independent think tank. It's called What's In A Name? It examines the issues around equal marriage, using an evidence-based approach including evidence on what has since happened in those countries that have already legislated. The report argues the conservative case for equal marriage. It makes recommendations to the UK government several of which are specific to the UK context, but the arguments and evidence are of much wider relevance. It's a very useful resource.

They Won't Magically Turn You Into a Lustful Cockmonster

Minnesota Vikings player Chris Kluwe explains gay marriage to the politician who is offended by another NFL player supporting it.

Yes, I just saw Kluwe's letter.  WOW - good for him!  If you have not read this, YOU MUST.

Chris Kluwe just earned a lot respect for calling out the Delegate Burns for what he is...  The letter is a biting, charring and more correctly accurate and to the point message to the religious bigots trying to silence the voices of marriage-equality - now by threatening their jobs.

Delegate Burns, by using his political influence in an blatant attempt to silence the free speech of a football player who's speaking out for marriage equality, I hope instead opened a can of vipers.

Another piece you need to read is of the illustrious golden-spoon candidate's wife.  I'll give her one thing, she knows how to remain on point and recite the party line when questioned about those "controversal or unimportant" topics which the election supposedly is not about - undoubtedly a well trained dutiful wife submitting to the will of her husband...

Apparently this happened already months ago - and it might have been posted then, but I just came across this now...

Oops, Mitt Romney accidentally starts talking to a gay veteran...
