it seems like so many advanced nations will be getting on board.  look how many of the industrialized nations have glbt leaders these days, presidents or prime ministers, how many major cities in the world have gay or gay supportive mayors or their equivalence.  visibility makes all the difference.

What wonderful news. We must make sure, in Europe, that whatever happens with the single currency we do hang on really tightly to all the good social and liberal reforms that have come out of the EU, and that they are maintained and advanced.
In many ways matters beyond price.

Thank you Fritz.
The right wingers here who would like to see us all back completely in our little "nation states," usually want to do it so that we, as a population are easier to exploit and control. Together with our brothers and sisters across Europe we need to stand up for our human and civil rights and not allow ourselves to be distracted.

Thousands of people marched in cities around Australia yesterday to demand equal marriage. The Labor Premier of Tasmania, who has pledged to legislate, addressed the rally in Hobart.

The Labor Premier of South Australia addressed the crowd from the steps of Parliament House in Adelaide and declared his support for a Greens bill there. ALP members will have a conscience vote. (South Australia was the first state to decriminalise homosexuality decades ago.)

Some experience in Australia shows the Duluth writer is correct.

The outgoing (Labor) government in Queensland last November legislated same-sex civil partnerships solemnised by celebrants in a legal ceremony. The Liberal National Party made repeal part of its election campaign and won in a landslide for a whole range of reasons, especially the state debt and the economy. The civil partnerships have not been repealed, but one of the first acts of the new government was to abolish the ceremonies.

The Australian Capital Territory had its same-sex civil partnership laws annulled by the Liberal National Party Federal government some years ago because of the ceremony. The Labor Party in the Federal government has opposed the ACT's proposed restoration of ceremonies because they claim they "mimic marriage" ceremonies. (Legislation of Territory parliaments is subject to veto by the Federal government.)

Like many churches in the South, they'll just claim that they were all for equal rights all along. And no one in the pews will contest the statement.

Yeap.  I've seen it happen before... the whole black and white thing first hand as a child.  Many churches in the south remain as segregated as they were 50 years ago, though not all but around where I grew up, you betcha and it's pretty much the same way today - sadly "...the law cannot change the heart, but it can restrain the heartless"  MLK..  or in this case give them more power.  V
