Ah, HR, "m'dear," you don't say much…but you get your point across.

Straight into the "greatest hits" for this one!

If you are on the "down low", you are trying not to be noticed, you are being inconspicuous, you are probably doing something your spouse won't like, like catching an exciting new disease. It usually means cheating on a lover, sneaking out to meet someone else.
Ennis was on the DL with Jack, because he didn't want to get caught.  The words "down" and "low" both sort of imply being subdued, or keeping a low profile. Jack and Ennis thought they were invisible on the mountain, they thought they were on the DL, but since Aguirre saw them, they weren't on the DL as much as they thought they were. Being on the down low is pretty much the same as trying not to get caught.
If you have a computer, you can look up just about anything. An online Ebonics dictionary would be one place to look, or go on You Tube, find Snoop Dogg being interviewed, preferably by Conan O'Brien, and listen to it, until it makes sense.

Good one royandronnie. I always knew Jack was a good dad.

Thanks to all for the kind remarks about my last post.
Perhaps it is time for a more upbeat play on Paul Simon:

He's a ranch hand. Don't try to hide it.
Horseshit on the soles of his boots.

He's a poor boy. Empty as a pocket.
Empty as a pocket with nothin' to lose.

Sing "Ta Na Naaa. Na Na Nah."
He's got horseshit on the soles of his boots.
          ranch hand
Horseshit on the soles of his boots.
          poor boy
Horseshit on the soles of his boooooots.

That is a funny poster--I love it!  And what a tribute to the film!

What's next--a sports poster telling Wyoming people to beware of ENNIS ELBOW?  And JACK ITCH?

“on the down low” or “on the DL” is a phrase used primarily in the black community in the U.S. to mean “closeted gay”.

a man who is married or otherwise seemingly straight but who has sex with men surreptitiously can be said to be on the down low.

more information on the expression HERE.

Thanks a lot Tom!!  Smiley
