Threads about specific filmmaking aspects: cinematography, music, costumes, art direction, editing, makeup.

How about a thread discussing the soundtrack?

Dave, it might be helpful if you tell us exactly what a moderator does. Is it an onerous task (although this is the nicest bunch I have posted with, so it can't be too bad, eh)? Will affect how one can post? I'm sure there are many of us who spend great amounts of time on the Board who would/could help out as long as it did not affect our abilities to join the discussions.

Oh no, you can still participate just as much.

But all good questions. Since Meli actually drew up the guidelines for the mods and is overseeing them, I'm going to ask her to respond.

A moderator reads everything in his topics, watching for inappropriate posts and taking action if necessary. He also keeps the converation more or less on topic (mostly less, around here). He may post as much as he likes and is encouraged in particular to post in the threads he's moderating. If there are complaints, he responds to them.

pm'ing Pete.

I love all these new topic ideas but thinking it might be a good idea to create more organized subcategories like:

Cinematography - (child topics: Favorite Scenes, Worst Scenes, Scene by Scene Analysis)
Character Analyses - (Jake & Ennis - Gay?, Alma, Cassie)
Creative Writing - (Fan Fiction, Sequels, I Swear..., Other Books)
Music - (Soundtrack Discussion, Other Songs)
Literary Book Critiques
Self-Help - (Coming Out Resources, PFLAG, Gay Marriage, Personal Brokeback Mountain Stories)

Not sure if this is the right approach but you get the idea. BTW, Dave - thanks for all you're doing for us!

Folks, I am blown away by all these great ideas.

And let me explain a little better than I did late-late last night about the question of opening up new threads to all.

In addition to needing more mods, we're wary of organizational issues. It could be very easy for this place to suddenly be a huge mess of a hundred threads where it's hard to find anything, etc. (Believe me, when you grow really suddenly, you find problems you never dreamed of.)

We know the main discussion has gotten way too gigantic for anyone new to take on, or even for most regulars to keep up with. We want to expand the threads and give you the chance to have more focused conversation.

We just don't think it's wise to lurch from a handful of threads to possibly a hundred or more overnight. So we want to start taking your ideas and creating more threads a handful at a time, organizing as we go, and playing it by ear as we expand--seeing what kind of feedback we get, what people like/dislike about it, adapt as we go.

Soon the boards will take on a life of their own--as they are already beginning to--and we will step back more and more, and let it just create itself, with all of us here as part of the creation.

We just want to take a little care in getting ourselves there, especially in these very early days.

All input is welcome. Feel free to toss out ideas for organizing things here as well. (eg, I really liked gnash's idea in post #16 "how about a mega MOVIE SCENE DISCUSSION forum, with breakdowns of scene in chronological order?" i bet a lot of people would love to get into that nitty gritty. some people will hate it, but some will love it. the problem is we could have dozens of threads, and that could make a huge mess of the boards. but gnash was right on the money of suggesting we create a section to bundle them together, so people could find them easily, without all of them cluttering up everything else. including that was really helpful.

(i know, it may sound obvious in hindsight. but organization is going to be key as we expand.) i have been to lots of other boards through the years, and the ability to find things easily--and to stumble into likely threads of interest while you're on your way--are crucial.

I'd like one on whether Jack and Ennis were about to break up when they had their the last scene. There seems to be hot debate on this point. Was Jack moving on, etc.

We have a thread about Jack's fate - what about Ennis?
What do folks think he went on to do
Drink himself to death
Enjoy his grandchildren
etc.

you know i have that scenario all written out, although it fits the story a bit better than the movie.

Just for fun, how about some fictional background for the four main characters?

cole, as far as i can tell, that is pretty clear, although i suppose you could flesh it out.  its a clinical psychologist's wet dream of pathology.

How about- "how was seeing the film the second (or 3rd, 4th, or 5th in some peoples cases) different from the first time?
