I don't know if this has been posted before, but it's worth a re-post.

Local woman 'reads all about it' for others

Aug. 30, 2004
Laura C. Jackson

Books on audiotape are readily available for those who are visually impaired. But what if someone wants to get the local news or the latest tips from a newspaper advice columnist?

Volunteers for Metropolitan Washington Ear read the Washington Post and several other periodicals cover to cover to provide valuable, short-term information to those who are blind, unable to read print or unable to turn the pages of a newspaper.

Jaclyn C. Pascarella, a College Park resident who has served in various capacities with Washington Ear since around 1988, is one of about 350 volunteers who read front-page news, the sports section, the horoscopes, the obituaries and more to those who otherwise couldn't receive this kind of information.

"My kids wouldn't let me read out loud to them anymore," said Pascarella, recalling how she began volunteering with Washington Ear.

After reading an article that requested volunteers to read to the blind, Pascarella auditioned for the service. She started out reading one-hour segments of popular books long before books on tape were popular. Back then, visually impaired people could access the service via a radio substation broadcast.

"My first book was a Don DeLillo murder mystery," she said. "The section I was reading had some sexy parts. It was a little strange, but I read it straight through. As a reader, you're not supposed to do any editorializing or make interpretations. You just read the words."

a couple of weeks a go i saw a lady in the underground. from behind, she looked like jackie. whenever i see somebody like that, i think of her. it's a beautiful memory.  Smiley

At the gathering at her place after she died, we were encouraged to donate to the Washington Ear in lieu of flowers or any other memorial. It's a great organization, and they still use a subcarrier of the public radio station WETA, I think.

Hellooooo Jaclyn!   Kiss Kiss Kiss    It's been a long time since I've been in here, but had to tell you that Terry and I went to a screening of Brokeback Mountain last night in OKC.  Believe it or not, it's the first time we've watched the movie together.....funny, since the movie is wholly responsible for me being in the Southwest these days.  It's been a while since either of us have watched it.  It was amazing at the flood of memories & emotions that came rushing in when that first, solemn note played until the last credit rolled.

We both left the theatre with heavy hearts(again) but also with an appreciation of what we've been through, and thankful to have found each other.  But....seeing the movie made us miss you immensely!  We talked and laughed about this little journey we've been on and how strange it is that life can turn you in a different direction on a dime.  We talked of Nellie, Fritz, Linda, Brad, San Antonio and Bay City....and of course, you.   It would have been great to call you and share the night with you.  I know the hopeless romantic you were, you would have been waiting by the phone to hear all the details.  I'd be lying if I said I didn't shed a tear for you last night.

Miss you and love you, always!
Terry and Mitch

Hi Dear Jackie,

Wanted to wish you a Happy Fourth Anniversary - BBM Backyard BBQ, San Antonio, August 11, 12, 13 2006.
Although we lived just 4 Metro stops apart, it took over a thousand miles of travel to finally meet.  I miss you.

Love and Hugs,
(((((((((((((((((((Jackie))))))))))))))))))))

Jackie,

I hope you were listening the other day when Wayne, Sarah, Chuck and I were singing softly along with "The Maker Makes", that Wayne had put on the car radio.

He said "This is for you Jackie" and suddenly I felt as if the world around just stopped existing and we were the only ones breathing. I was driving, and humming along, and missing you so damn much.

Love you always, sis.
