I am not fond of the tone of this article.  Who the h--l is this pompous author anyway?  Is he like Ebert, who flipped at the last moment due to the in-your-face racial content of TRASH?

The certain fact is that the loss of Best Picture of 2005 for Brokeback Mountain is considered to be the Academy's largest, most shocking mistake.  This has been stated many, many times by people inside and outside the Academy.   One member (among many; I wish I could remember his name) later stated" "It is the biggest mistake, shocking at the time and more shocking now.  It will remain so".

The pic of Haggis holding those 'awards' makes me sick.  I never liked him or his work, but wow do I despise it now.  It's almost unbelievable - he played the race card in a lousy film and certain stupid ampas members - with the help of very anti-BBM 'critics' inside and out of course - fell for it.  TRASH --unbelievable.

If you two want to believe there was no homophobia involved in their decision..

First of all Kathy, I thought that article pretty much proved Lyle's point.    Although I don't believe there is any guarantee what will win best pic!  I mean don't people bet on such things?

And secondly I don't think anyone here said homophobia didn't play a part in the decision, just that it was not the ONLY deciding factor.

Is it not possible (POSSIBLE) that some people (voters) just did not care for the movie?  I mean how can we possibly say no for sure?

As for Paul Haggis, I can't imagine hating him.

With Million Dollar Baby and then Crash, Haggis became the first individual to have written Best Picture Oscar-winners in two consecutive years

Besides he is Canadian!  Wink

I understand what you say bubba.

Still, homophobia certainly was part of the anti-BBM insider and outsider campaign ampas and its partners in crime had.  Of course it was.

As far as haggis goes, my opinion stays the same and probably will always be the same.  I don't know, that picture of him holding those 'awards' and the way the TRASH stampede climbed on stage just turned me off very badly.
(The gasp of the audience at the realization that BBM did not win Best Picture was so loud it must have been heard outside the theater, and Jack Nicholson's reaction isn't to be forgotten either).

After presenting the Best Picture Oscar at the The 78th Annual Academy Awards (2006) (TV) to Crash (2004/I), he told the press he was surprised as he thought Brokeback Mountain (2005) would win. Nicholson then told the press that he himself had voted for Brokeback Mountain (2005).

Catching up on my reading:

Lyle,

I don't know why you still are so obsessed with the [Oscar Loss].

I frankly think it is their loss and I have been so successful at blotting out Oscar from my life that I have completely forgotten about it. None of my friends talk about Oscar no more as any who tried will get blank stares and conversations soon die. In "WTH are you talking about, WTF is Oscar anyway?" kind of way.

In any case I don't think [the Oscars] deserve any attention. Even if I don't hate them for snubbing BBM, it still doesn't measure up. (Japanese's "Departed"? Do they even care?)

-Interesting.

Apparently, in 2008, some of the 1.3 Billion people in China actually gave a shit about the Oscars.

I can only agree in that in my circle of friends, no one discusses the Oscars after they are over.   Let alone years later...  no one cares, they really don't.  Which brings us back to their importance.

Honestly to me, they are a fun night.......Asti Spumante, shrimp!! lol    And who wears what and who goes with who..

Having said that I do like to discuss with you Lyle, you know your stuff.  Kiss

I believe he is only saying that it doesn't make sense that they didn't give BBM the film oscar.
Doesn't measure up,,,make sense...pass the smell test, or something like that.
