Matt vs. the Academy should be posting a review of Brokeback Mountain soon.
http://mattvstheacademy.blogspot.com/

Well, he did a couple weeks ago.

He also finished reviewing all the films that year
and wrote his verdict for Best Picture of 2005.

I responded.

Perhaps I'm behind the times, but on page 56 of this forum there were some unpleasant things said about me and my post regarding Crash vs. Brokeback Mountain. I wanted to make it clear that I did read them and add my side:

http://snowiemovienight.blogspot.com/2011/02/oscar-rewind-2005-crash.html

Plus the original article that started it:

http://snowiemovienight.blogspot.com/2011/02/oscar-rewind-2005-crash-vs-brokeback.html

**The story will never disappear.  Brokeback Mountain is a masterpiece.  TRASH is a race card joke.   I suppose you go merrily along with the insider campaign against BBM started by "ampas" members, has beens, and homophobes, along with their very willing accomplices in the "press".
BBM's award for Best Picture, (as well as the major acting awards), was stolen by TRASH and, for the record, everyone knows it.  This is not and never will be forgotten.

FYI:  No way could BBM have been made as the story of a heterosexual couple.  No damned way.

Evil CRASH  Evil Finally Makes a Top Ten List

Award Winning Movies That Suck

Characterized by flat performances from otherwise talented actors as well as dismal dialogue and cinematography, this list of award winning movies that suck features hyped up, sentimental dramas like “Kramer Vs. Kramer” and exhausting computer generated ramblings like “Avatar.” With inflated budgets and melodramatic plots, these film garnered a number of prestigious awards despite a list of impressive, more deserving nominees, among them some of the greatest films ever made like “Citizen Kane” and “High Noon.”

Oscar Legacy  on the Oscar website.

For most years, they show best actor/actress, or best director of the film that either won or stole best film as the main picture. Except in 2006. They have Best Director for a film that was robbed of Best Picture.

Best Director Ang Lee with Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal on the set of "Brokeback Mountain."
(not sure who is talking to Alma, Jr in the truck)

Ya know, after all this time, I will never understand the "Crash bashing" that goes on here.

I thought the film was well done, touching, and really had a fantastic story to tell.

and yes, I'll say it.  It deserved the Oscar for Best Picture.

Academy Builds Surprise Into Best Picture Rules

Beverly Hills, CA (June 14, 2011) - The governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted on Tuesday (6/14) to add a new twist to the 2011 Best Picture competition, and a new element of surprise to its annual nominations announcement.  The Board voted to institute a system that will now produce anywhere between five and 10 nominees in the category.  That number won’t be announced until the Best Picture nominees themselves are revealed at the January nominations announcement.

[...]

If this system had been in effect from 2001 to 2008 (before the expansion to a slate of 10), there would have been years that yielded 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 nominees.

So, they know what that would've meant for 2005.
Someone has to get their hands on the 2005 voting data...

“And the Oscar Goes To”: Revising Academy History, Co-Starring Kevin Wilson

2005 on the other hand was a disaster, not because there were crappy films, no, but rather because the crappiest of them all won best picture. The nominees that year were “Crash,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Capote,” “Good Night, and Good Luck,” and “Munich.” Instead of choosing the film that actually broke down barriers for a minority, “Brokeback,” Hollywood showed us its true colors and gave the award to the film that is the movie equivalent of your grandmother saying “I’m not racist, but…” followed by calling Mexicans lazy and black people criminals. They gave the award to “Crash.” If a revision has ever needed to be done it’s 2005.

That article is like a written version of a TMZ episode!  LOL!

Still, they think Brokeback Mountain is a crappy movie (they think all the 5 nominated
films are) and would replace them with things like Syriana or The New World!  Sheesh.

Reply to the above from kathy on 6/16/11 @ 7:54 p.m.:

**The "ampas" jackasses sure are going at it, aren't they?  All because of the 2005 Best Picture travesty of a piece of TRASH winning over Brokeback Mountain.
IMHO they'll never make up for that (as well as BBM best actor and best supp. actor awards), etc.  Their new "rules" read like Greek to me anyway.  What a bunch of jerks.

And -- It's kind of late, isn't it?**
