As you've gathered, the table function is akward and the tabular format isn't always apparent without some additional work. In the above example, I added an extra row between the headings and embedded a horizontal rule in each cell of that row: [ hr ] ; I also added an extra column in between the others and put a pipe symbol (|) in it to approximate a vertical rule.

Often it's eaiser to surround some text aligned by padding spaces between the columnar text with:

Which would look something like this.

You're right, of course. The code for a cell with a horizontal rule line would be (note the absence of spaces between the square brackets and the "hr" code):

You can put breaks (and space indentations) outside of the table-cell commands, which makes the code marginally easier to work with, e.g:

  [td]KNEW[/td]
  [td][/td]

  [td]TRIED TO BELIEVE[/td]
[/tr]

That code would render just fine (as in the examples above).

Last question:  How to wrap lines of text, within a cell?

Your web browser will wrap text within a cell if necessary. It's automatic.

If you want to deliberately insert a line break within a cell, just put a break at the desired point within the content of the cell:
