Quote
Chuck, you'll get a kick out of this story,

a friend of ours, while we lived in DC, found one of his tenants at one of his apartments had skipped and not paid his rent.  He had to go in, sort all the stuff out, throw away stuff, and do what ever with the rest.  Well, under the bed, there was 1 long white box full of comics.  No particular subject or anything - include old superman, batman, archies, xmen, fantastic four, the shadow and on and on.

Guess who got them for free.... Grin      As a kid and comics, I was into Casper, Richie Rich and Archie  --  I was a true sissy... Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Thought I'd move this post from the diner over here.

Michael, I'm lovin' the covers!

Thanks Chuck!  I have more and will post a few tomorrow (tonight I don't get back from work till very late).

There's one from a mystery in the 50s that looks like a Salvador Dali painting.

'A Cry of Children' - John Horn Burns

"Young love in the Bohemian fringe world."

Michael:

Very interesting collection.  Of course, we've all heard of dime novels, but some perhaps have not really seen one.
This excellent grouping is a great example that sex always sells.  I especially love the teasers on the covers.

'The World In The Evening' - Christopher Isherwood

Good and Evil . . . . Temptation . . . .  without even saying it, the artwork says it all.

The wonderful thing Gerry is that is developed very much by chance!  People I work with know I like these sorts of things and would pass them along as they came in.

What's particularly wild is that they would try to sell Christopher Isherwood and Jean Paul Sartre this way!  Boy oh boy, were some of these readers disappointed!

Especially Sartre!

I laughed out loud when I found that one, Fritz!

I guess truth in advertising didn't apply then. (As if it did now.)

I remember a situation comedy on TV, can't remember which one, but a professor was trying to sell an anthopology textbook, and his friends got together and designed a very sexy (for the 1950's) cover and a highly misleading ad campaign. It became a best seller!

I vaguely remember the British actor Alan Mowbray being in it, and he was the leader of the group trying to push the book.

I used to  like to collect records, but they get a little heavy when you move a lot.

Here's 2 of my favorites

I collect theatre programs. I have 5 souvenir prgrams from London that Cameron MacKintosh autographed a few years ago when he stayed at my hotel in Bay City.

I recently purchased this program on Ebay. The show is "Texas, Li'l Darlin' ", and the star was Kenny Delmar.

John:

They are colorful indeed -- Are these albums spoken or sung?  Love Bette's cigarette smoke musical notes.
. . . sure is a whole other world of collecting these.

Both albums are singing.

I bet you though Bette Davis couldn't sing.

You'd be correct.

But Maya Angelou is a pretty good singer.

John:  I noticed the different look to Playbill -- I wonder when it went color?

Gerry

I'm going to guess that they changed the cover in 1958.

This is the cover for West Side Story from 1957:

And these 3 are from 1958-1960
