It was roughly about that time. The actual Mexican Independence Day in September is rather early in the school year, but by the time the Fifth of May rolls around, college students can let themselves have a blast. It started with Hispanic students in California and Texas, and just grew. Many people in this country think that this day actually celebrates Mexican independence. It's grown to be a much bigger celebration in the States than in Mexico, where it's a rather minor holiday limited to the State of Puebla.

Typical of Americans, to take a foreign festival, much like St Patrick's Day, make it bigger than in the home country, then reexport it to the same.
