So, almost 10 days later, the tomato is sort of  surviving. The top couple feet are green and live looking, the bottom, not so much. Leaves are dead and shriveled. Do I pull them off or not? (Remember what happened when I pulled "weeds.")There are a few little yellow blossoms opening up on the top. I think this is a good thing. We're not supposed to have rain in my immediate area for several days... so I'll water, for the first time since last summer. Don't know if the possibility of a few free tomatoes are worth all the work.   Grin

Those won't be tomatoes, Doodler.  They will be pods filled with spores.  Run.

Miracle tomato update.

It lives... sort of. Haven't watered it... keep forgetting to take a gallon with me when I go outside... so it WAS looking pretty dehydrated. But we've had 5 inches of rain in the last 30 hours, so that problem should be solved. And some critter has recently eaten most of the "branches." It was probably a deer which are hanging out in droves since we're getting close to hunting season and my neighbor feeds them (to keep them on the property, away from hunters.) BUT there are three tomatos on it. The smallest is about the size of a jax ball and the largest a little bigger than a ping pong ball. Wonder if they are going to get bigger and maybe edible.
