How did you first find out about Brokeback Mountain?

Heard about it maybe a year or so before it opened back when word was Colin Ferrel and Josh Hartnet were maybe going to play the characters.

Had you read the story before you saw the movie?

Yes, I bought the paperback the week it came out to bookstores, may have been in '98 (?), because I like to read and the cover pic and thought of experiencing Wyoming appealed to me. I admit I put the book down long before I made it to brokeback but when I heard about the gay cowboy movie based on Proulx's short story I pulled the book back off the shelf and read it. I thought immediately that in the right hands it could really change society.

When was the first time you saw it?

Opening night, can't remember if it was the 15, 16 or 20 of December last year.

How many times have you seen the movie?

I think 14 or 15 in the theater and at least once a week at home since the DVD release. I wish it came back here to the big screen in a revival. It's much better on the big screen in the theater atmosphere.

Did you get any people to go with you? How many?

Over the course of it's run 5 different people.

Which character did you most identify with?

Definitly Jack.

What lesson/message did you get from the story/movie?

I never questioned the possibilities of true love between two men so oddly my favorite part was Ennis' relationship with Alma Jr. It solidified my wanting to have children.

Where was your life when you first saw the movie? Where is it now?

Things are about the same, still with my partner of now 6 years (he's the best thing to ever happen to me and I am more convinced of this each year), only since we live in Jersey we are now anxiously awaiting Corzine's gay marriage decision so we can figure out when, where and how we should proceed to live our happy lives together . Also so very glad the republicans got tossed out of government. Sincerely hope us gay folks can get a reprieve from all the hatred bandied about these last few years. It's been exhausting and we could use a break.

How did you first find the Dave Cullen Forum?

I think it was linked thru towelroad or outsports message boards.

When did you first join the forum?

Had to have been in Dec of last year.

What made you join?

Like minds, intelligent banter.

Do you remember your first post?

Not at all.

The administration has been working extremely hard to solve the slow down issue that has been plaguing the forum for some months now. It has been determined that to solve this we will have to change the host company of the forum. The new host server has now been contracted with by Dave as of today.

We are proceeding rapidly now and hope to have the conversion complete within a few weeks at the latest and hopefully much sooner. We will keep you (members) apprised. Please look for announcements in the Newsbox. Some changes will likely come up suddenly--that is the nature of computer conversions, so it is impossible to know before we test whether something will go flawlessly and take two hours, or uncover thorny issues that will take days. The testing process is being started. This will not affect the forum at this point.

So taking this into consideration, we don't want to give you timeframes that are unrealistic. As soon as we finish a stage, we'll proceed immediately to the next, and the exact changeover will likely come on very short notice to you (members). We will post this changeover time in the Newsbox as well as in the individual threads, and will give you as much lead time as we can manage. This will enable us to end the slowdown ASAP.

Thank you for your patience.

How did you first find out about Brokeback Mountain?
I first found out about Brokeback Mountain when it was the cover article in Entertainment Weekly magazine in November 2005.  I looked at the picture on the cover and thought there is that Heath Ledger dude AGAIN as I didn't care much for him then, (boy has my opinion changed since then).  Eventually I read the story because Entertainment Weekly kept having article after article about how good the story, film, music, acting, everything was and they are not too generous with their praise.

Had you read the story before you saw the movie?
I read the story first. Our power was out for days last December and it was very cold in my apartment.  I lay down on my bed in a patch of warm sunshine and read the story, (this is such a wonderful memory for me).  I thought the story was good but not anything to get excited over.  The story kept preying on my mind.  I couldn't stop thinking about it.  I re-read it and then, POW!, it hit me like an emotional punch in the stomach.  So sad, so very beautiful.  I'm so glad I read the story first as it greatly enriched the film experience.  I think seeing the film first would ruin the pure experience of Proulx's writing.

When was the first time you saw it?
I saw the film for the first time last February.  I was very excited and nervous like I was going to some forbidden porn film instead of an excellent art house film.  The emotional punch kept going.  I had no idea it would be as beautiful and moving as the story.  It is a nearly perfect adaptation of the written word.

How many times have you seen the movie?
Twice in the theater, many times on DVD.  I now sometimes just watch parts I love like the Brokeback scenes, reunion, and fishing trips and the beautiful Dozy embrace.  I haven't seen the movie since October as I have been able to let go a little.

Did you get any people to go with you? How many?
I went alone.  I live in the South and you don't share films about gay men with just anyone.

Which character did you most identify with?
Ennis.  I am just as repressed and introverted as he is.  It blew me away that Heath Ledger was playing someone like me!  The body language and coping skills of the lonely introvert was a miraculous and accurate performance by Ledger.

What lesson/message did you get from the story/movie?
That you should not think twice about chances to love and be loved.  I walked away from love out of the same fear that consumed Ennis and have the same regrets.

Where was your life when you first saw the movie? Where is it now?
Lonely and lost.  The book and film have had a great effect on me and I now see things in a new light.  I am so thankful to Annie Proulx and Ang Lee for giving us this profoundly moving and beautiful experience.  This is almost akin to a religious revelation of sorts.  The story and film haunted my thoughts day and night for most of 2006.  I have now moved on a bit but still think of BBM a lot, I listen to the soundtrack at least once a week, and check The Daily Sheet daily as it has become my favorite part of the forum.

How did you first find the Dave Cullen Forum?
Just surfing Google by typing in Brokeback Mountain

When did you first join the forum?
I joined after reading for months.  I was most interested in the character analysis of Ennis and the music which is such an important element of the movie for me.

What made you join?
I wanted to join in the conversation with these wonderful people who have also shared this life changing experience.

Do you remember your first post?
It was about the song The Maker Makes and my counter theory that the person speaking was Jack and not Ennis as most people thought.  To me Ennis was the maker except in the last lines.

Celebrating one year of Brokeback Mountain

At this time last year, Brokeback Mountain made its appearance in the theaters of America.  Also, the Ultimate Brokeback Forum made its appearance on the internet.  To mark this occasion, we are presenting a list of questions for you.  We hope that reading and answering them will help you take a walk down memory lane, and remember the beginning of the journey we all took because of this movie that touched our minds and hearts.

How did you first find out about Brokeback Mountain?

In a article in Newsweek magazine in the Fall of 2005.
Sounded so interesting I kept an eye out for anything Brokeback related.

Had you read the story before you saw the movie?

Yep, shortly after reading the Newsweek article in Fall 2005.

When was the first time you saw it?

December 23 2005

How many times have you seen the movie?

2 times in the theater.
4 or 5 times on DVD.

Did you get any people to go with you? How many?

Yep, with family and friends.

Which character did you most identify with?

That is a hard to say, some days I identify with Jack, some days Ennis.  It depends on my perspective that day.

What lesson/message did you get from the story/movie?

Life is too short, so live in and appreciate the moment.
Tell the people in your life how you feel while you can.

Where was your life when you first saw the movie? Where is it now?

I had just experienced a difficult couple of years with the loss of some important people in my life, my Father and my Uncle- who was like a father to me.
After my uncle passed, I ended up raising his teenage daughter, my cousin, for a couple of years, which was a blessing.
Today, I am still processing from the unforseen direction my life took.

How did you first find the Dave Cullen Forum?

I am an avid reader, and I got into reading fan fiction.  The DC forum was recommend often by the writers I read.
I turned to Fan Fiction as a way of exploring some of the questions I had about the film/book, and found a wealth of very talented writers who hung out on the forum.

When did you first join the forum?

I think back in October of 2006?

What made you join?

To chat with some interesting and smart people.

Do you remember your first post?

Yep, I remember I was pretty scared.
I said something about delurking, and I commented on a funny story I had just read.

How did you first find out about Brokeback Mountain?

First from a gay friend (m) in the States, and then I heard it was Ang Lee directing so I knew I'd have to see it.
I have always liked m/m too, and the actors looked attractive.

Had you read the story before you saw the movie?

No, though I'd read other Annie Proulx novels.

When was the first time you saw it?

January 11th 2006 in the Curzon cinema, Mayfair in London.  First week.  I took the afternoon off work.

How many times have you seen the movie?

Three times in the cinema, many more on DVD.

Did you get any people to go with you? How many?

I always saw it on my own, on purpose.  I told friends and colleagues how great it was, and I eventually persuaded my hubby to watch the DVD (he loved it).

Which character did you most identify with?

Ennis.

What lesson/message did you get from the story/movie?

Too big a question, too many lessons, too many messages.  I will never be able to articulate it all, so I just witter about Jake's lashes instead, and crack jokes.

Where was your life when you first saw the movie? Where is it now?

In similar, OK places.  It tapped into much earlier experiences of mine.  I'd made a lot of progress on my emotional reticence before I saw it.

How did you first find the Dave Cullen Forum?

Googling BBM.  I liked the look of Dave's other work and also his resemblance to Aidan Quinn  Wink

When did you first join the forum?

The day after the Oscar went to the wrong film.

What made you join?

The white heat of rage; need to emote with like-minded others.

Do you remember your first post?

Yes, see above.

Celebrating one year of Brokeback Mountain

How did you first find out about Brokeback Mountain?

New Yorker review of the film

Had you read the story before you saw the movie?

Yes, New Yorker, without prologue: thot it good AP, and put it in my folder of "great short stories" - but, actually, no big whoop.

When was the first time you saw it?

NYre story was one thing: film directed by Ang Lee another.  high excitement.  re-read the story from APs close range book, with prologue, became
actually at that point stricken with love for the boys, couldnt wait to see the film:  I saw it as soon as it opened in Massachusetts.

How many times have you seen the movie?

Seven on screen, many times on DVD -

Did you get any people to go with you? How many?

First time with two women friends who were, apparently, underwhelmed, comparing it with French film about lesbians: - I knew I had to see it again, alone, and find somewhere to talk about it.

Which character did you most identify with?

Jack.

What lesson/message did you get from the story/movie?

"We've got a fuckin' situation here.  Got a figure out what to do"  -

Where was your life when you first saw the movie? Where is it now?

less interested in playing by the rules: - I do community "organizing" in elevators, waiting rooms, on the operating table, etcetc.

How did you first find the Dave Cullen Forum?

Googling BBmt with a need to talk.

When did you first join the forum?

January 2006

What made you join?

People talkin' about what I was thinkin' about nonstop.

Do you remember your first post?

Yes but Im not eager to share - so much has happened since then.

How did you first find out about Brokeback Mountain?
I was looking for comments of the gay community about about another gay movie I had seen in January (A House at The End of The World) and I arrived on the official BBM Internet site. I was a bit prejudiced against something I had seen defined as ''gay cowboy movie'', but I got hooked about ''Your own Brokeback''.

Had you read the story before you saw the movie?
No. I bought it the day after seeing the movie

When was the first time you saw it?
5.March

How many times have you seen the movie?
5 times in the theater, half on DVD. Before buying the DVD (yes, the one I never watched completely), I kept looking for the bits available on YouTube: I suppose I've seen thousand times the dozy embrace with Haden&Metheny in the background and equally often the reunion and maybe a bit less the SNIT.

Did you get any people to go with you? How many?
Three times with a different friend, once with two friends, once alone. But of all these persons I'm the only one who was haunted afterwards.

Which character did you most identify with?
Jack: I tend to protest and try to change a situation that is not right, I'm lively and extroverted, I'm in love with an Ennis and I've endured quite a lot because of this, but it was (and it is) my decision.

What lesson/message did you get from the story/movie?
That when you've found a person to love it is important to keep this love alive.

To go and track down people who had been important for me in the past (not lovers, but friends).

To be more active for gay rights and especially to speak out if someone shows contempt.

Where was your life when you first saw the movie? Where is it now?
I was already very much in love with my husband and the movie increased that feeling.
But now I'm waiting to see if our relationship (20 years long) will survive his nervous breakdown and the fucked up situation we are in.

Anyway BBM made my life richer and my feelings more intense. This will be forever.

How did you first find the Dave Cullen Forum?
I was looking for more information about the movie

When did you first join the forum?
Officially in March, but I had been lurking for at least one month before. I had never been in a forum and it took me a while to decide to try and join.

What made you join?
I wanted to participate actively to the discussion.

Do you remember your first post?
No. ... Now I went back to see it: it was about not understanding my strong feelings for the movie in the BBM Fever Support Club thread, which together with ''How BBM affected me'', was a great place to be before I discovered slash. Now I don't manage to follow more than the slash thread and read fics...

Thank you to everybody on this wonderful forum!

How did you first find out about Brokeback Mountain?

It was after the Oscar Night. I read about the winner movies in the German newspapers and they mentioned BBM as one of the best films - but without winning the Oscar for this category. I was just curious.

Had you read the story before you saw the movie?

No, I hadn't heard anything about the story and the movie until the Oscar Night - and normally I'm really not interested in watching dramas ... I don't know why I changed my mind - I think it was maybe a kind of fate ... And maybe it was a picture of Jack and Ennis that let me feel something deep in my heart...

When was the first time you saw it?

March 2006

How many times have you seen the movie?

I don't know - several times until I stopped it because I couldn't bear the pain any more ... I haven't seen the film since June. And my DVD is still standing new and packed in my bookshelf ...

Did you get any people to go with you? How many?

No, sadly no ...

Which character did you most identify with?

First it was Ennis, then it was Jack - and now I can't tell it anymore. I feel with both of them and both of them need to tell me their story, reminds me of things. Both of them are my daily companions and I really can't think of a life without them ...

What lesson/message did you get from the story/movie?

Oh, well ... this is really hard to say, because I'm still in the recovering process ... I think - at the moment - the most important message for me is, to reflect my life every single day, to ask myself if this is MY life and if this is the way I want to live.

Where was your life when you first saw the movie? Where is it now?

I was Ennis-like, lived in a kind of shell, I think. Now I'm more open. I widened my circle of friends, which was very important for me, I have plans for myself (not only for my family). I re-think my relationship with my husband, which causes some secret problems that aren't solved jet ... I reflected some experiences during my childhood, which was very healing for me. So all in all I can say the movie influenced my life and it changed it in many ways for the better.

How did you first find the Dave Cullen Forum?

I think it was in March, after I saw the film. I googled Brokeback Mountain. But as my mother tongue isn't English I was too afraid to join it. I found the courage to join the community after I've read lots of fan fictions which helped me to improve my English  Smiley

When did you first join the forum?

I think it was in September 2006

What made you join?

The need to talk about the movie. The German fandom is very small and I wanted to hear more about the movie, wanted to be part of a worldwide community, wanted to talk and listen so the slashers  Smiley

Do you remember your first post?

Yes.

How did you first find out about Brokeback Mountain?

Saw a newspaper clipping

Had you read the story before you saw the movie?

No, I had read a couple of Annie P's stories but not this one. Needless to say, I got straight online and ordered it. Roll Eyes

When was the first time you saw it?

Jan the 14th -, it was a 45 minute drive there...only screened at one cinema. I got my MIL who never minds my daughter and asked her if she could mind her. She was amazed that I would drive all that way to see a movie on my own.  Cheesy

How many times have you seen the movie?

13 on the big screen, lost count on the DVD.

Did you get any people to go with you? How many?

I have got my sister, friend and husband, mum, and 4 other friends. The rest on my own.

Which character did you most identify with?

Jack.

What lesson/message did you get from the story/movie?

I was just struck by the hopeless futility of it and so wished there had been a way out for both of them.

Where was your life when you first saw the movie? Where is it now?

I am so much more involved in life than when I saw the movie. I care more, feel things more and try not to waste life. I spend a lot more time appreciating things. I am not scared of being honest and true to other people about the impact BBM had on me because I know that I am not alone.

How did you first find the Dave Cullen Forum?

Googling BBmt with a need read anything about it.

When did you first join the forum?

Argh, my original account got deleted - but my first post was on Feb the 8th...I lurked though for about 2 weeks.

What made you join?

I had never joined a forum and probably would have lurked forever. But I heard about something called Juicy Bits.  Wink

Do you remember your first post?

Yep, Impact that BBM has had on you - I felt so consumed by it, couldn't eat, couldn't sleep, would break down crying in weird places, I thought that I was going crazy.  Roll Eyes

How did you first find out about Brokeback Mountain?

In a reportage on TV in Sept 2005

Had you read the story before you saw the movie?

No. But I knew her before. I gave my mom one of her other books for birthday.

When was the first time you saw it?

March 8 2006

How many times have you seen the movie?

13 in theaters, countless times on DVD

Did you get any people to go with you? How many?

Two times with my mum, three time with BF, other times all alone (which I prefer)

Which character did you most identify with?

Jack.

What lesson/message did you get from the story/movie?
I should be honest to myself, no matter how much it hurts.

Where was your life when you first saw the movie? Where is it now?

It was at a turning point, I moved away from home, started a new job and got fired after just three weeks. BBM gave me a feeling of home.
Now, I'm happy with my life, with my new job, got used to my new place (though I don't wanna call it home) and BBM is a constant part of it.

How did you first find the Dave Cullen Forum?

Some folks mentioned it on LJ's Wranglers

When did you first join the forum?

July 15 2006

What made you join?

An invitation from somebody at wranglers

Do you remember your first post?

Not exactly - but one of my first was a Jack-with-tongue-picture for Lolitaray! Grin

How did you first find out about Brokeback Mountain?[/b]

September 2005 - when it won the Golden Lion Award at Venice

Had you read the story before you saw the movie?

No, although I had read other Annie Proulx books

When was the first time you saw it?

29th June 2006

How many times have you seen the movie?

Too many times to count on DVD. Only once on the big screen though  Lips Sealed

Did you get any people to go with you? How many?

Nope - although the theatre was full of other people who'd gone on their own just to see BBM - so although I was alone, I was surrounded by kindred spirits.

Which character did you most identify with?

Ennis when I first saw it, but Jack more and more every time I see it...

What lesson/message did you get from the story/movie?
Grasp love with both hands and never let it go, whatever the circumstances. Fear can destroy you...

Where was your life when you first saw the movie? Where is it now?

I was doing well professionally -  been in a new job for a couple of months - but was in a closed off space emotionally. Now I'm allowing myself to be more open with myself and others.

How did you first find out about Brokeback Mountain?
I hadn't been paying attention to movies or even keeping up with my weekly magazines.  I finally saw a review in of BBM in Time Magazine, about a month after the review was published.  The topic interested me (a gay male love affair) and I saw that Larry McMurtry had helped write screenplay, so I figured it had must have been handled well.

Had you read the story before you saw the movie?
No, was not familiar with it or with Annie Proulx at all, other than seeing some copies of her book "The Shipping News" in a bookstore a while back, but I didn't read that either.

When was the first time you saw it?
I think the date was February 5, 2005.  Super Bowl Sunday, the early matinee.  I remember being too upset afterwards to watch much of the Super Bowl -- went to bed with a headache from crying.

How many times have you seen the movie?
Six times in the theater.  Would have liked to see it more on the big screen, but I started late and could only handle seeing it about once a week.  Then I got the DVD in April and have watched that somewhere over 10 times.

Did you get any people to go with you? How many?
The second time, I took my boyfriend.  He didn't know I'd already seen it.  He didn't mind it but didn't have a deep "message" reaction.

Which character did you most identify with?
Probably Ennis, because I avoid commitments and am shy.  I loved the Jack character, so saw it more through Ennis' eyes.

What lesson/message did you get from the story/movie?
As many here have already said, take your opportunities for love where you find them, don't be afraid, and let people know that you care about them.

Where was your life when you first saw the movie? Where is it now?
Fortunately I had already heeded that message in my own life with regard to my boyfriend, so the movie made me feel very thankful that I had done that.  In practical terms, I was reading history books at the time of first seeing the movie.

Now I have joined the Book Club on the Dave Cullen forum and am reading more fiction -- some gay, some straight.  I have discovered the novels of Patricia Nell Warren ("Front Runner", "Harlan's Race").  At the risk of sounding like a heretic here, I am more wrapped up in her characters (Harlan and Vince now, since Billy has already died) than I am in Jack and Ennis, at the moment.

How did you first find the Dave Cullen Forum?
I was trying to find out all I could on the Internet.  Somehow came to reviews on After Elton, and there was either a link to or a mention of the Dave Cullen Forum.

When did you first join the forum?
March 14-18, somewhere about there.

What made you join?
I started out reading the Scene-by-Scene analysis, trying to understand more of what had actually happened between Jack and Ennis (and people's opinions of why).  People had already been writing for several months, so I mostly read, but finally decided to comment on something.  I was afraid of not sounding as intelligent as everybody else -- there were some pretty deep discussions going on.

Do you remember your first post?
No, sorry, I don't, but it was something in Scene-by-Scene.  (Probably something pretty obvious, because at that point I didn't feel I could contribute much.  I had a really low post count until getting into the Book Club.)

How did you first find out about Brokeback Mountain?
How could one not know about BBM? It was advertised everywhere. Saw/heard reviews about it. Saw trailers for it. It was everywhere.

Had you read the story before you saw the movie?
No, I didnt even know there was a book written.

When was the first time you saw it?
I fought this movie tooth and nail....didnt want anything to do with it. Just like "everyone" else....I didnt want to watch another "gay" movie. So I am one that JUST recently has seen it (this month to be exact). And even then I have only seen it in parts.....never all the way through. But I am dying to do so.

How many times have you seen the movie?
Just 3 times at home on HBO in different parts.

Did you get any people to go with you? How many?
No....no one would/will watch it with me, although I will say that the last time I was able to catch part of itt...my 15 year old daughter watched some of it with me....she didnt get the same reaction that we all did. As soon as I left the room she changed the channel LOL!

Which character did you most identify with?
Jack.....I have been inlove so deeply as Jack only to have the guy reject me the same.

What lesson/message did you get from the story/movie?
I guess I would of fought harder then Jack did for Ennis. I know Jack didnt want to push Ennis, so thats probably why he didnt pursue him so hard, but I just dont think now after knowing all that I do about love and lost love that I would of fought harder and told Ennis I loved him. Now in my own relationships I just go for it....I dont hold back, I dont want to sit there later in life and wished I would of said something or wished I would of done something. I dont want to be at the end of my time and say "I swear....."

Where was your life when you first saw the movie? Where is it now?
My life? Hmmmmmmm I guess at the time my life was kinda crappy....just had had a fight with my boyfriend...which made me sad and I guess the movie impacted me more cause I was so open and vulnerable. Now my life is back on track...having a great holiday season...however I am still plagued with thoughts of this movie.
