Apparently the assistant conductor did not know the meaning of this gesture in New Zealand. I had only a few days before learned its significance from Chuck.

Not quite, but my coach car was the final one in the consist, and these two were taken out of the rear end in New Mexico.

It was wonderful! I love to go coast to coast by train, whenever I can (of course, I don't get many new county lines that way any more). This was my fourth trip to the West Coast, plus one other time, my first long train ride, to Las Vegas in 1992, that time I flew back with the German Air Force since we were flying regularly there at that time.

Well, those too, but we used to do a lot with the Red Flag exercise at Nellis AFB. Though the A310 that I took back flew out of McCarran.

Thanks, Jess! We couldn't have asked for better weather in the Southwest as well as in Los Angeles. I've never seen the skies so clear in LA, though I must admit I'd never been there during a cold season before.

Back when I would take long trips by train more often, I'd frequently put on the LaserDisc I had of The Harvey Girls, specifically the song "On the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe" to get in the mood. Unfortunately, though I've still got the disc, the player is unreliable. But I didn't think of looking for the song on YouTube, and I'm sorry I didn't, because they have the entire 8 minute production number here!

I was playing this song in my head very often during the trip. The return was on the train referred to in the film, now called the Southwest Chief, once the flagship train of the ATSF. Back when there was an ATSF.
