I like the sound of the group, but don't care for some of their edits. All of Mr Lightfoot's words should have been included.

Thanks.  Impossible to think about transcontinental railroads without thinking of Lightfoot.  I agree that it's best to go for the uncut version.  Personally, I think that the second verse of "God Save the Queen" is by far the best one and if you're going to bother to sing even one verse of Prussia's "Heil Dir im Siegeskrantz" you might as well plough through all 5 minutes of it: Wink

[Speaking of anthems, Happy Independence Day to USian friends.]

By the way, concerning the "Royal Pacitic Express" that I mentioned earlier, the normal train tour that company runs takes you through a couple of the BBM filming sites south of Calgary, including Crowley, where you ride past the parking lot on the same track as the freight train at the beginning of the movie.

Here is a link to a Youtube video that I have been creating of our trip to the North Norfolk Railway Autumn Steam Gala. Lots of famous old British locomotives here, including "Black Prince.

Thank you Fritz.
I worked hard on that. I do need to get a proper camcorder though that was just done on the "movie" part of my stills camera.
I never expected to get in to making movies.

Quick question for you rail buffs:

* One of my earliest "memories" (-real or not?) is being carried in my mother's arms one night as we ascended up a pedestrian ramp to a building that appeared to be a free-standing but elevated railroad terminal. I "recall" that passengers had to descend flights of cold and loud metal stairs to get to the trains below.

I don't recall where the station was, but I think it was somewhere in NE Ohio, or W. PA...a B&O or NYRR station, perhaps(?), with an adjacent highway intersecting the ramp..
I never saw another elevated terminal building after that trip with my late mother... In fact, I thought I had dreamed it all, that is,  until this A.M., when I stumbled across this old photo of one on an train forum.

Q. Does anyone recall these 'elevated' railroad train stations? -- Were these terminals popular at one time?

Thanx!

The old New York Central station (pre-Amtrak) in South Bend was elevated like that. I'd just guess that in a crowded urban area it was easier to keep the train rolling above street level so as not to have a lot of grade-level crossings blocking the local streets. Some towns without these elevated tracks were notorious for cars not being able to enter or leave the town without being delayed by at least one train, freight or passenger.

Thanks, Fritz!  ~~

You know I believe it was a NYC RR terminal that I'm recalling!  I've been digging through old Midwest photos and maps, all day, like someone possessed! Cheesy

I am also recalling a few rail line names, now, too, like B&O and Erie-Lackawanna.

I distinctly remember now being carried down flights of stairs to board the train,  the metal stairs were so steep, cold and scary-looking, even the big black metal sign  that hung over the boarding vestibule and read, "TO TRAINS" in big white letters was scary (and at the same time thrilling! -  I was a little kid, then). Grin

Fritz - thought you might like this...he has a lot of nice western/cowboy drawings, too

This old train sits in Chandler, Arizona.  It's a reminder of the way things used to be although it's Obsolete now
