If you're short copies of Variety I'm happy to scoop up all the copies around me and mail them to someone for distribution as a donation. Should be about 10-30 copies depending on how early I get out there.

oh gosh i hope you aren't in my neighborhood- near pico and robertson in los angeles

Heh heh heh.  Funny!  I see a fight like Moms at the mall the week before Christmas!  No, seriously, no fear, I'm not in the city.

About snatching up all copies of Variety ... uh ... don't we want people to see the ad?

I thought people only grabbed 'em up to keep others from reading something ....

Good point.  But everyone in the industry pretty much subscribes so these are the extras.  I could leave a few.

You are correct

I've noted in the above poll how many issues I want, and I assume that's only to alert Variety as to how many we will order.  Is that correct?  I assume I still must go to their site or call them to place the actual order, right?  No hurry on this, I know there's way too much stuff to get done.  Just wondering.

I don't wanna be annoying, and it's not even because he's Latin, but Gustavo Santaolalla should be among the people you thank. He created the original score, and won several awards, including the Oscar, for that. The rest of the ad is perfect. Now I really ougth to get some sleep, I have an early meeting tomorrow morning.  Wink

Gus and Rodrigo are being added.

True, but the point is that this was Ang Lee's Oscar speech, and it's in honor to him as well as J&E, who don't actually exist.  The very implication of the line is that they are inventions who are so real that they affect people tremendously.

Just so you know, here's what I just posted at the IMDB site.

I live in the Venice area of LA. My next door neighbors are mostly hard-working Latino families. An elderly couple (he's been on disability for years due to a medical condition, she operates a business selling produce (and on Saturday, homemade tamales and on Sunday, home-made carnitas (YUM), as well as bottles of booze that seem to have fallen off a truck). Despite a lot of gang activity on my street, most of their kids have not become involved in gang activity (there was a drive-by a couple of weeks ago, but that was all about crack dealers fighting for turf). However, in the front unit directly adjacent to our house lives a lesbian couple. One is from Philly (mad props) who is a professional belt designer. Her Australian girlfriend was very visible in her homeland as a red-carpet interviewer, who also had her own show on MTV Australia and who does stand-up comedy. Now she's trying to make it in LA.

I do live in the 'hood. Gang shyte does go on. However, when I went on vaction in December, I told the bangers to please watch my house. They did, and chased away a street person who tried to break into my car.

On the corner live an interracial couple, he's a successful white screenwriter, she's Japanese. He's kind of an a-hole, but we have a live-and-let-live attitude here in Venice.

Two houses down is a gay male couple. They bought a few years ago for around $300K. Their house is now worth north of a million, due to the bubble in the housing market. They spend most of their weekends (and their incomes) improving the place.

The black family that has owned the house across the street since the early 40s (Venice was the first place west of the Mississippi that allowed legal black ownership of property) has allowed their front house to be used by a foundation that tries to reintegrate people who've fallen through the cracks back into society. These people, like rodeo cowboys, are mostly phuckups, but a guy I befriended a year or two ago just optioned a screenplay into six figures.

My roommate runs an artist studio a block and a half away. Said artist just got a spread in Vogue (there are more famous artists living in Venice than anywhere else in the world). He's built a 3,000 square foot studio behind his old 20's Venice beach bungalow. Industrial style, like many of the new buildings. Steel and glass.

This is the real LA. Haggis and his people are living in the Hollywood Hills looking down on the flatlands as a hotbed of seething racial tension. When in reality, it works rather well most of the time, when the crack-heads aren't drawing police fire due to gang-related incidents (and, trust me, this is the exception rather than the rule).

It's a bizarre place to live, when the houses are worth north of $1M, being so close to the beach, yet the street culture is alive and well. I love it, as it can't last. Condo developers are already ruining the vibe. Hopefully it won't turn into yet another Manhattan Beach or Santa Monica, but I can read the writing on the wall. Housing 5 blocks from the sand is just worth too much money.

I'm so glad I was here to witness this, and am writing some short stories about it. Hell, who could wish for better material?

This is the real LA. Haggis can retreat back to his compound

Please, please, please make sure you thank Ned. That man has been incredible. I think he has gotten less sleep than I have. He has put up with all us wanting change after change, has humored Dave and I to no end (ie--okay, can we see it with this pic now, or change that word, or that font). I even interrupted his dinner last night, and he was gracious enough to talk to me.

So, please thank Ned when you see him on.

Well, I think #7 is about seven times as good as the one I first saw, the one that struck me as crowded and messy.  Also, I would
still donate, if someone could tell me how much money is left, and what future plans are.  (I finally see that I can contribute without
going through Paypal, which I don't use.

Good work and congratulations to all who worked on this ad.

And a note to the people writing about "hoi polloi."  It doesn't mean high faluting and elite; it means, actually, just the opposite.
It sounds as if it should mean high faluting because of hoity-toity, probably, but like some words that sound the opposite of what
they are, hoi polloi means the ordinary person, the common man.  (it's like "enervate," which a lot of people think means to
energize, rather than to tire out, or weary.)

MUSCLA:  Fantastic post, thanks for sharing it with us.  Where does one post things like that on imdb (the internet movie database for those who don't know)?  I would like to post my oscarwatch resignation from Sunday night, at the end of which I encourage people to come to Dave's site.  Thanks!

To Dave and all who went sleepless to achieve the impossible - thank you for putting so many souls into one voice.

What I wouldn't give to see the reaction on Jake & Heath's face when they first learn of our gesture.  If nothing else, I hope it proves to them beyond a shadow of a doubt, how deeply felt their performances were and just how many lives it touched.

I hope they smile all day about it.

I agree. I don't like saying that Jack and Ennis "don't exist". They are certainly real to all of us or we wouldn't have spent countless hours and shed countless tears on their behalf. Hope it's not too late to make that change!?

That sounds good. Dunno if it'll diverge too much from Ang's version, and how will it affect the visuals.
Too tired to reflect on it now... I've a headche from staring at the compu scree non-stop since early afternoon. Need sleep to recharge for tomorrow's battle!

I apologize - I wasn't trying to diverge from Ang's version... and I didn't know that was an intent.  This is a message from our hearts, in our words.  Just bouncing things off the board - I may be wrong, may be right - but truly enjoy reading everyone's thoughts.  Yepper, it sez I'm a virgin but I've been reading since the beginning.  Registered today just so I could type my BIG mouth. Kisses to all.
