I don't buy the ''job protection'' issue.

It's a major issue. Perhaps you're not exposed to it as much as we are up here in Toronto, but we get attacked for this all the time. The Governator was bashing Canada not too long ago because so many films were being made here that he wanted made in California. It is an issue that the LA film types take seriously.

I don't think that's fair.  A large number of people here have said they believed that many AMPAS voters genuinely preferred Crash.  No one has said that all the Crash support was strictly due to homophobia.

We don't even know (nor does the Academy) how many voting members actually saw Brokeback Mountain. The Academy is so incompetent it doesn't even verify the integrity of the votes. This whole Oscar debacle is becoming absurd. Are these awards based on merit or what? Is there any integrity to this selection process at all?

exactly, I just don't buy this "it's about the economy" issue.  that's just ridiculous.  these multi-millionare voters aren't worried about being on the streets.

Investors spend millions on films. That's a lot of bananas. That means hundreds of LA types lose out each time a film is not made there. And many voting members are sympathetic to "runaway films." It may be strong arm tactics -- make your movies here or else -- but it is a factor. That's why I call the Academy parochial. It's very provincial in it's outlook.

1/8 of a page is a very small canvas, so the process for the second ad is taking a bit longer.

I don't read USA Today. When you say a 1/8th page ad what are the dimensions for this (lenght x width).

This question is open to anyone who reads USA Today.

Dave posted a copy of the banner ad we will run on the Variety website. What do you folks think?

http://davecullen.com/forum/index.php?topic=2016.msg102791#msg102791

Remember that when they click on it, they go to the thank you page (same link as in the print ad). Even if they don't click on it, they get the message loud and clear!

Does it not make sense to put the name of the film on the banner ad?

Brokeback Mountain
Best Picture

And keep the dozy embrace image to the right as it is.

Wow, looks like the first run pre-order DVD SOLD OUT at TLA Video!, i should be getting my copy April 4, but TLA says it will be taking orders again on March 20th, this is amazing and a good sign!, they cant keep up with the orders,  check TLA again the 20th, I am not sure of any other "gay friendly" websites to order from.

Donating to universities, libraries, etc. might be the places where the most impact can be had.

IMO, if we're going to use the rest of the money for advertising, it would make more sense - and have more long-range benefit - to promote the DVD. Or if taking a poll of the contributers is possible, consider using it for copies to donate to libraries and universities who'd be interested.  The theatres won't be running it that much longer; but copies for viewing elsewhere will be around for decades.

Just in response. I have donated to the ad and I personally do already donate yearly to Matthew Shepard fund and to Human Rights campaign and many other like charities.  I just felt this money was for advertising for a movie that moved me beyond belief so I assumed that is where the money was going to go.  I agree all those other charities are wonderful and we should all contribute what we can to each of them.  Heck every amount of money is welcomed by them. So spread your good fortune no matter how large or how small and that should be it.
