I've noted in the above poll how many issues I want, and I assume that's only to alert Variety as to how many we will order.  Is that correct?  I assume I still must go to their site or call them to place the actual order, right?  No hurry on this, I know there's way too much stuff to get done.  Just wondering.

that's correct.

our rep thinks she can get the print run increased for us, but needs a ballpark estimate of what we're likely to order, collectively (though we will actually do it individually.)
i have to get at least 8  or 12 maybe i will put a few on ebay and blow people away....i have some huge bbm fans on there.

“and two people who don’t even exist, Jack and Ennis.”… ??

How about:

“and two men who will forever exist in out hearts – Jack and Ennis.”

Jack and Ennis do exist in our hearts.  Give tribute.

That sounds good. Dunno if it'll diverge too much from Ang's version, and how will it affect the visuals.
Too tired to reflect on it now... I've a headche from staring at the compu scree non-stop since early afternoon. Need sleep to recharge for tomorrow's battle!

Exactly. The phrase is right out of Ang's acceptance speech. And everyone got what he meant--and got choked up by it--so they should get it again. (Especially since most of them will recall his speech, which is part of the point.)

I apologize if this has been said some posts back ( I tried to keep up but everytime I came back there was 5 more pages of posts.  Tongue )

I just want to point out how effective the layout is at drawing your eye to pertinent points.  It is really amazing to me.

1) If one looked very quickly while flipping through Variety they would instantly recognize the Brokeback picture (catch attention) and these words would jump out:
   Thank You
  Brokeback Mountain
   Best Picture

So an impact is made on the glancing reader.  Even if they flip to the next page the ad impacts.

2) But it is likely that the hook will be set and a slightly less quick more detailed but rapid scan with the eyes reveals this:

Thank you
For transforming countless lives through the most honored film of the year
Brokeback Mountain
We agree with the unprecedented acclaim for Brokeback Mountain as
Best Picture

Very impactful for a quick scan.

3) That second hook will draw in a high percentage of people I believe and the full copy is easy to read and drives home quickly the point about wide acclaim and that it is the best picture without really requiring one to read many of the actual award names.  Quickly the reader's eye jumps to who funded the ad - fans.  So in a few seconds a lot is communicated.

To those who finalized the copy and the very very effective layout I want to congratulate you on a outstanding job.   It works brilliantly.  Thanks for stepping up to do the work.

It's briiliant - that's what good layout does -captures your eye where you want it to.

I don't wanna be annoying, and it's not even because he's Latin, but Gustavo Santaolalla should be among the people you thank. He created the original score, and won several awards, including the Oscar, for that. The rest of the ad is perfect. Now I really ougth to get some sleep, I have an early meeting tomorrow morning.  Wink

he's in there.

Draft 7 is great, the changes are great, this effort has been great, thanks, thanks

Dave, you and the team get some well deserved rest

I am weeping that this is so beautiful.

I have been passionate through this whole discussion as have many.  It's because we care.  Having mentioned Jack and Ennis in our thank you's is so profound.  Smiley  I bless and treasure all of you.

God bless you all.  I feel a miracle has happened in this ad.

For those thinking there needs to be something stronger about homophobia coming, I totally agree.  Let's take that to the e-mail/essay thread and figure that out.  For those who want a Brokeback Mountain Foundation, lets think about that.

A foundation be the ultimate tribute to this story and movie and everyone who created it.  It would carry on the work that was started long after we are gone.  Has any movie ever inspired a foundation?

------------------

But most importantly, I have taken suggestions and taken a step back.  The pic plus thanking Jack and Ennis acknwledges the truth of who they are.

God bless.  I have had so many good cries since this film opened, I cannot believe how much my soul has been cleansed by this movie and this forum and how much it still continues.

So much love to all of you.

Are we allowed to send this to our friends to let them know what we are doing and ask them to pass it on?

I added this to Pete's post, but for those who have already passed it:

Yes, definitely, BUT PLEASE DON'T DISTRIBUTE THE AD UNTIL WE FINALIZE IT. WE'RE CHANGING THE WEBSITE URL, ADDING THE THANK YOU NAMES, AND ADDING A CLEARER LOGO.

We'll let you know when we have a final.

“and two men who will forever exist in out hearts – Jack and Ennis.”

This I love.

Jack and Ennis do exist.  Smiley  Ang even said that.

Didn't he correct himself after saying they don't exist?

Saying Jack and Ennis don't exist is sort of what the homophobes say, isn't it?  That we don't exist or that our love is a lie?

This is NOT criticism at all.  Only thinking of what the most impactful wording of the idea is.
Just gratittude, gratitude, gratitude I offer you. .

I even hate to put my head out of precipice to say it, because I dont' want anything this to be seen as critical.

What ever you choose will be wonderful, I know.  Smiley

I was going to post something to say how I feel about this, and you've said absolutely everything. After all, the reason we're all so appalled by the snub from the American Academy of Homophobes and Bigots is that this isn't "just a film". It's not "just a story". The filmmakers have said this. Annie Proulx, who after all deserves more praise than anyone, has said this.

This story is about me, you, people we don't even know. People who will never have the courage to even see it. And people in countries and areas of countries where it will be almost nigh impossible to see it.
And it is life changing. Has been for me.  I've been more energised, angry, happy, gloriously sad, and alive than I've been for, hell I don't know how long.  I've made friends here, on this board. Friends I will keep for life.

Thank you everyone who has contributed in any way to this. Even if just like me, you squeezed a bit of money you didn't think you had out of your credit card.  And bless you Dave Cullen.

Trust in us. We'll never falter or fail

In American slang, it has come to mean those who are above, or think they are above, or the elite.  "The Hoi polai were all at the whitehouse for dinner."

Just so you know, here's what I just posted at the IMDB site.

I live in the Venice area of LA. My next door neighbors are mostly hard-working Latino families. An elderly couple (he's been on disability for years due to a medical condition, she operates a business selling produce (and on Saturday, homemade tamales and on Sunday, home-made carnitas (YUM), as well as bottles of booze that seem to have fallen off a truck). Despite a lot of gang activity on my street, most of their kids have not become involved in gang activity (there was a drive-by a couple of weeks ago, but that was all about crack dealers fighting for turf). However, in the front unit directly adjacent to our house lives a lesbian couple. One is from Philly (mad props) who is a professional belt designer. Her Australian girlfriend was very visible in her homeland as a red-carpet interviewer, who also had her own show on MTV Australia and who does stand-up comedy. Now she's trying to make it in LA.

I do live in the 'hood. Gang shyte does go on. However, when I went on vaction in December, I told the bangers to please watch my house. They did, and chased away a street person who tried to break into my car.

On the corner live an interracial couple, he's a successful white screenwriter, she's Japanese. He's kind of an a-hole, but we have a live-and-let-live attitude here in Venice.

Two houses down is a gay male couple. They bought a few years ago for around $300K. Their house is now worth north of a million, due to the bubble in the housing market. They spend most of their weekends (and their incomes) improving the place.

The black family that has owned the house across the street since the early 40s (Venice was the first place west of the Mississippi that allowed legal black ownership of property) has allowed their front house to be used by a foundation that tries to reintegrate people who've fallen through the cracks back into society. These people, like rodeo cowboys, are mostly phuckups, but a guy I befriended a year or two ago just optioned a screenplay into six figures.

My roommate runs an artist studio a block and a half away. Said artist just got a spread in Vogue (there are more famous artists living in Venice than anywhere else in the world). He's built a 3,000 square foot studio behind his old 20's Venice beach bungalow. Industrial style, like many of the new buildings. Steel and glass.

This is the real LA. Haggis and his people are living in the Hollywood Hills looking down on the flatlands as a hotbed of seething racial tension. When in reality, it works rather well most of the time, when the crack-heads aren't drawing police fire due to gang-related incidents (and, trust me, this is the exception rather than the rule).

It's a bizarre place to live, when the houses are worth north of $1M, being so close to the beach, yet the street culture is alive and well. I love it, as it can't last. Condo developers are already ruining the vibe. Hopefully it won't turn into yet another Manhattan Beach or Santa Monica, but I can read the writing on the wall. Housing 5 blocks from the sand is just worth too much money.

I'm so glad I was here to witness this, and am writing some short stories about it. Hell, who could wish for better material?

This is the real LA. Haggis can retreat back to his compound

I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate this post.  Kudos.

I lived in Hollywood for a couple of years just b4 it was on the verge of gentrification.  Quite frankly, everyone knows exactly where - that fagulous dump on Highland just north of Franklin.  Deco pre-war "residential hotel" with the abandoned pool in the basement.  Valentino's stables just beyond. My apartment faced south - a spectacular view - and every night I would watch the lights from the El Capitan Theater.  I'll never forget two things about Hollywood.

First was an elderly woman who was born and raised there - living in San Diego - where I was living and relocating from.  She said "Say hello to the roaches for me."

Apparantly some things are left unsaid.  Hollywood is INFESTED with roaches.  Always has, always will be.  Not very glamorous, huh? Doesn't make the headlines either.

Second?  Hollywood is a bastion of Russian Jew Immagrants - whose women LOVE to wear gold lame' shoes.  And for some unknown reason REALLY like to dye their hair red.  So one day I'm sitting in Taco Bell Hollywood Blvd. and I make eye contact with a hefty Russian Jewish Red Haired Woman wearing Gold Lame' Shoes so I asked her:  "Did you ever believe in your life that you would be living in Hollywood?"  She replied "No."  Then I asked "Did you ever imagine it would be like this?"  She replied "FUCK NO!"  Good God, we had a good laugh.

So I left tinsletown for bigger and better, Kodak was built down the block (wish I owned) and revisited at the time Cher was doing her "Farewell Performance" (the first year)

I have to admit that the Kodak and all of Hollywood & Highland is impressive California Architecture. I especially appreciated the "Persian Rugs" embedded in the cement.  Tres' Fag!  I get so jealous sometimes - such imagination.

But there was a third thing about Hollywood I had forgotten.  The man with no legs was still there.  The man that spends his day on the ground polishing the stars on the walk of fame, begging for a tip.  Every day.  Years had past and yet he is still there, begging for a tip.

Hollywood is not as progressive as it wants you to think.

It is a state of mind.

Dave wins,

From the wikipedia:

Hoi polloi (Greek), an expression meaning "the many" in Ancient Greek, is used in English to denote "the masses" or "the people", usually in a derogatory sense.
