Later in the story, it's a wonder Ennis didn't fall down the stairs when Jack arrives in Riverton.  Ennis was drinking beer non-stop!

I grew up in a rural area near the coast of the Atlantic ocean, and used to go down to the beach on stormy days:  as the "sun comes up" over Signal, the mountains look just like stormy ocean waves as they reach the beach shelf and start to roughly rise before they collapse on the beach, mountains like ocean storm waves frozen in their tracks right before they crash and break...   even the color is the same.
