I read something, where I can't remember, where a Baptist minister had called on all "Christians" to do this exact thing.  To get their views out through any medium that would allow them "free speech" to do so.  The point was to keep unsuspecting people from being lured in by "the culture," as he referred to it, and offended.

I've left my reviews on all the major sites and in some cases (shhh . . . ) even more than just once, but I'm not a member of NetFlix, so I can't get into their site.  Unless you know of an alternate route.

Hi guys, found this interesting review of BBM in a weekly newspaper published here in South Africa called the Mail & Guardian (they have the best arts section of our newspapers) and BBM was reviewed under the title : 'My own Private Wyoming : Movie of the Year'.  Take a look if you wish.  Here's the link

Matt

Thoughtful and very well written (although I fear it would cause some of the "Were They Gay" thread posters to foam at the mouth).  Thanks for sharing that one, Matt.

I don't know where to post this, so I will start here.   Our movie is getting PANNED in the Netflix guest reviews.   These are the ones that anyone can write.   Many of the reviews are transparently and/or blatantly homophobic.

Maybe we should start a campaign here... all Netflix members:  get yer cyber-butts over to Netflix and write a glowing review!

I was just thinking out loud.

No doubt those ae the same people wh gave 'King Kong' raves reviews(while shoving popcorn into their mouths)!!! Grin
Gotta be entertained, folks!!! Grin Grin Grin

Will Brokeback Mountain come out with a special edition DVD? I would love to have one with commentary by Heath and Jake.

Hmm, some lip-curled, high-horse, commentary.  She also bemoans lack of depth/character development etc in most films nowadays and tiny attention-span requirements from most viewers; but (by implication) apparently fails to find any of these being present in BBM.

Well, she doesn't actually examine the film, admitting that she didn't really pay attention when it was screened on her flight. What she has to say about it is filtered through a very obvious reactionary political prejudice.

Another review, this time from Uncut DVD, running a little late, it's the May-June 2006 version from Australia.

BBM is mentioned in an article in the UK Guardian daily newspaper today.  The article is not a review of BBM, but is about feminist writer Ariel Levy, her views on the popularity & widespread acceptance of the contrived image of women as airbrushed, silicone-filled raunchy sex-kittens and related themes.

Levy mentions BBM as an example of a recent film where a more realistic portrayal of sexuality was presented rather than the common format of in-your-face tanned & toned bare jiggling flesh, meaning not only the gay but also the straight relationships featured in the story.  It surprised me that her choice was a movie primarily about a gay relationship and also set in the 1960s-1980s.  God forbid that there could be a contemporary film with as much impact that showed us realistic straight relationships!

I’m also posting this in the thread about BBM’s impact on culture, as it is an example of someone linking BBM to female sexuality in a way I hadn’t encountered before.  I did wonder if BBM happened to be the writer’s favourite film & she is as fond of it as we were so she had to get it in there somehow!

The article can be found at with the BBM mention in the last three paragraphs.  It is quite lengthy but good for anyone with an interest in the above topics.  http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,,1802234,00.html

This is why BBM was such a grand piece of cinema, its ability to articulately weave many complex themes so well is quite extraordinary in general, and even more so especially when juxtaposed to the movie that won the BP Oscar this year.

The Broken Back of Counterfeit Liberalism

By Karin S. Coddon

"Months after the event, an event that I concede is the quintessence of triviality, I am still pissed. I’m pissed that the Academy Awards snubbed Brokeback Mountain in favor of the “surprise” choice of Crash, a film described by Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan as a “feel-good movie about racism.

It’s not that I am a rabid cinephile or that Brokeback, which I truly loved, was the best or boldest film I’ve ever seen. Nor is it simply that the Brokeback slight was clearly fueled by a combination of homophobia and cowardice. But several friends and I remained angry for the next couple of days after the Oscars. My sister and I remained angry for a good two weeks. Here it is months later, and I’m still fuming. My spleen was jump-started by my coming across an old issue of Entertainment Weekly in which one of my literary heroes, Stephen King, also takes the Academy to task over bypassing Brokeback Mountain for Best Picture. One of King’s comments particularly struck me, gesturing as it did toward the true basis for my umbrage in excess if not of the facts, then of the context. The Academy, observes King, is at heart “as conservative as the current U.S. House of Representatives” (EW 858, Mar 17, 06, 126)............

daninprov, I just finished reading this excellent article. So intelligently written. It was long but I read the entire article and agree with the author completely.

Funny, just this morning while driving to work that infamous Oscar night came to my mind's surface once again. And can you believe I still got very angry at the thought of what happened. Just like the writer of this article said, months later and she's still pissed. And I love how she mentions her friend thinking about boycotting hollywood by not paying a penny to see a movie in the cinema this year. And how cool was it that she mentioned about faux liberal hollywood. Trust me, hollywood is about as liberal as Anne Coulter.
