"With $42 million in the till as of last Monday and last week's Golden Globe wins, more and more industry watchers are saying that Ang Lee's film could reach $100 million between next Tuesday's (1.31) Academy Awards nominations and the 3.5 Oscar telecast"
New poll anyone?  Viz: On which date will Brokeback hit $100M?

And here is the link to the USA Today article that very neatly sums up much of what I've tried to convey in regards to this film as a cultural touchstone and how that will impact the box office.

It officially crossed $50 million this weekend -- woohoo!

Some milestones:
Highest grossing Gay film - "Birdcage" @ $124 million
Highest grossing Western film - "Dances with Wolves" @ $184 million
(Info from www.boxofficemojo.com)

My guess - $175 million/domestic & $425 million/worldwide -- that would be cool!

This weekend is going to be huge.

Lots of people that have held off will be seeing it for the first time because of the nominations.

And they will tell friends.

So next weekend will also be huge.

$100M by the Oscars?  You bet!!!

There will likely be a nice bump on Valentine's Day. It's *the* date movie of the year.

I was thinking that same thing.  Wouldn't that be sweet if we went #1 THAT week!

Question: Where will Brokeback's final domestic box office top out?
I went ahead and went for the biggie and said $ 150,000,000.00

I think many underestimate the power this movie has once you have seen it the first time.
This movie has already generated repeated viewings from us Brokeaholics (i am 8x and counting)
and I have chatted with others who have seen it just once and have to see it again.

I would love to pluck the feathers from The Birdcage as being the #1 Gay/Lesbian Film of All Time

This film won't break 150 mil on one audience repeat viewing. Unless a mass audience( maybe the sports lul after the superbowl will give guys incentive to check it out )  It seems to be losing it's "gay" stigma with more accolades and positive word of mouth. But seems with all the conflicts and curiosity about the films popularity versus personal convictions against the controversial content, people will be relegated to waiting for the DVD release. ( WHICH WILL BE HUGE )

How this film is chugging along now i'm guessing about 80-85 million by Oscar time, and a subsequent 15-20 in the 6 weeks following.
100 million + for an indie film about gay men is HUGE!!!!

Pierre,

You maybe right, but I think this movie is tracking very similar to Crouching Tiger, which went on to gross around $120mil without winning Best Pic.  I mentioned this in a previous post and it still is tracking just like Crouching Tiger.  On the first weekend of March in 2001, Crouching Tiger was at about $88million, which is pretty close to where BBM will be this year.

I see BBM hitting at least $85million and go on to gross as much as Crouching Tiger did, post-Oscar time.

Time to put my bet in I guess.....in the US, $120 million (I hope that I am underestimating....would love to see it reach more) and in Australia I would love to see it reach AU$20 million (I guess it all depends on how many weeks they will keep it in release and how wide the release will eventually be.....The Birdcage in AU reached $12 million)

Oh please please please let Brokeback Mountain overtake The Birdcage! What an awful thought - the biggest grossing gay film just an endless parade of stereotypes. Let the film that blasts the stereotypes do likewise to The Birdcage! Little facts like this just highlight again and again what a breakthrough this film really is.

BBM will make just over 140 million.  FOCUS will be able to say that the return was 10 times the cost.  I guarantee it!  More precisely it will be 140,344,066

I think I meant the worldwide gross Wink.
